This gideon is sure weird.
not sure how powerful though.
+1 is mostly meh
the animate effect is alright, the same as it has always been...
that Emblem is what makes everything weird, though, simply can't measure how powerful that actually is.
you'll activate it if you drop gideon at late game or if you happen to have one on the battlefield at a time you´re worried you might lose at anytime...
but seems mostly like a do nothing ability... killing a low loyalty planeswalker tends not to be the hardest stuff ever.
So....Gideon is the new Jace? I thought maybe when BFZ Gideon rotated he might not have the most busted card, but come on, is that even real? I don't even play Standard, and if that doesn't become a deeply hated card, I will get one of those emblems and eat it. 3 mana walkers are always strong, making one and indestructible Platinum Angel, seriously? seriously?
Although, as a Modern player I'm thinking that this is the card white has wanted, enough about Wizards giving the color no love, this is just busted!

Well THAT'S an interesting planeswalker. I don't know if I'll want to play with Gideon instead of Platinum Angel, especially now that I have the masterpiece, but I'm excited by him nonetheless.

And his emblem flavor...... sure would be a shame.... if Gideon were to DIE.
I'm really getting this slinking suspicion that Gideon's won't live to see the next block. If your superpower is being indestructible and taking no damage, the land of -1/-1 counters is basically your kryptonite. They're printing the best possible versions of him just before he gets axed.

My decks
Standard - RIP Cat
Modern - Death & Taxes
Commander - Mazirek, Trostani, Angry Omnath
At least that Gideon dies to Grasp of Darkness (at least, for the next 6 months when Grasp is legal in Standard). I highly doubt that it will be played in Standard until Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is legal, but that new Gideon is just plain powerful with Heart of Kiran.
Cartouche seem to give the non-indastruable mechanic the gods have. Solid Gideon and interesting ability to have for an ultimate.

Granted, when he was designed, they were almost certainly still under the assumption that Battle for Zendikar would have been out of rotation for a period.

We need better answers for Planeswalkers.
This Gideon is a lot more defensive than AoZ; if there's a UW control deck, I would expect to see it there.
I'm actually pretty down on Gideon. He doesn't generate card advantage and does a poor impression of Phyrexian Unlife. His +1 is cute, but not that powerful. It's about the same as Kiora, the Crashing Wave. A 4/4 for 3 is alright, but nothing to call home about. When you throw the restrictive color requirement on top I think it's pretty much a dud. Better than Gideon, Champion of Justice but thats it. Trial of ambition on the other hand looks really sweet. I may have to try it out in modern blink. Combined with flickerwist it seems pretty dirty, especially with all the big fatty decks like deathshadow and eldrazi. Over all the trials seems pretty impressive, definitely good in limited and many look constructed playable. Even the cartouches look constructed viable in pauper. I would definitely try the blue and white ones in pauper boggles. The blue one is a little pricey, but cantriping enchantments are good in the deck and evasion can sometimes be the difference between wining and losing a race.

I have the distinct feeling that this Gideon is a lot more flash than substance. It's a comparatively small area where the "ult" is useful. I mean, let's face it, you were going to try and get rid of either Gideon anyway. And if their turn 3 is to play this and ult right away...so? You weren't likely winning that next turn anyway.
It's a cool ability, but I don't think it'll amount to as much as people are saying right now.
I still want him, of course. But that's beside the point.
