I wonder if Aftermath screws up any tricks with Isochron Scepter. I do believe if this was a normal split card, it would be played with Isochron Scepter. But I'm wondering if Aftermath changes this.
It also makes me wonder if somebody could Burning Wish this card too...
As for the rarity. Rarities are based on the set issued.
They just explained yesterday that split card rules will change starting with amonkhet and affect all existing split cards: their CMC is the total everywhere except on the stack. So, no, isochron scepter doesn't work for this card nor for any existing ones. (I believe. Is there a split card with both side having a CMC of 1?)

wow that's a big change, I wonder why they took this long to change the rules on the split cards casting cost.
Limited. It is likely stronger in Limited than almost every rare.
I mean this is just clearly not true. This is a conditional 2 for 1 at best and it is fairly expensive to boot. It's a good card to be sure but better "than almost every rare"? Come on.
This is one of the few Limited cards that is amazing regardless of whether you are trying to close out the game, are at parity, or are trying to stabilize your board. The only thing that it isn't amazing at is being used in the early game, but you still can use the Prepare side in the early game and just use the Fight side later.

Well, actually there is a split card with total cmc 2 - Wax // Wane. And now it's the only split card that can be imprinted on Scepter.
I'm sure there're some "must pick" uncommons in every draft. This should have been uncommon IMO. They must be needing of a rare and decided to up its rarity.
But like the others mentioned... It's definitely not a good sign when it comes to power level overall.
Everyone complaining about the rarity of this card are the probably the same people who would be the first to say "omfg why is this uncommon" if it were printed at uncommon and it just got done getting beating you over the head in draft/sealed. Remember Armed // Dangerous? That card wasn't quite at rare power levels, but it sure was stupid. Once again, sets are built with Limited in mind more so than any other format.
The rarity of this card might actually be an indicator of the power of limited spot removal in the set. I'm starting to get a feeling we are about to be playing a reverse Torment-Judgement style block. White and Green will be strong now, then Hour will drop and Grixis will come in and just punch everyone in the mouth.

Your net is too wide with this all-encompassing generalization.
I've played since the days of Overrun and have never complained about cards like that. My comments about rarity are based on my recollection of similar cards. That is all.

This really looks like they didn't want too many of these in limited, not just because of the big swing it causes, but also because of Exert mechanic. It really does look like a must play if you can draft it as the potential blowouts are numerous.
The formatting is still completely vile. It's the aesthetic of it. The sideways text is an utter distraction even while you're reading the top. I don't do anything special with any cards in my GY even when I can cast a great number of them, why do I want to remind my opponent I have a special that could go off at any time? Booo-hsss.
So, passable combat trick + hyper overcosted, even more conditional Prey Upon is now Rare material, when there has been things like Savage Punch, Time to Feed, Hunt the Weak or Lithomancer's Focus, all of which serve similar purposes at Common for ages. This speaks miles of the power level of the set, and the people saying this is a Limited bomb clearly either don't play much limited or are trying to find a reason to justify this not being an Uncommon (hint: there isn't).
Hard pass for me. Well, seems like I'm skipping yet another underpowered midrange slugfest Standard set. Better for me and my wallet.
They waste such cool art on these hideous horrid frames from hell. I can't wait to tear this mechanic apart in the amonkhet survey. I'll rate it worse than freaking annihilator.
Kill first creature blocker using the card as an instant-speed battle trick
Life gain from combat damage
Fight a remaining creature of opponent's
Life gain from fight
Creature untaps so can keep it around for a blocker next turn (though it may not be likely, since you just gained at least 6 life -- though likely closer to 12 or 14 life)
This scenario is also pretty likely, though:
Use during opponent's attack phase to untap one of your tapped creatures and block with it
Life gain from combat damage
Use the fight side on your precombat main phase to remove the opponent's only untapped creature
Win.
Do people here not play a lot of limited?
The phrase "X for 1" refers to card advantage. Life gain and untapping creatures is not card advantage. This card is potentially a 2 for 1: block a creature, pump your dude to kill their dude, then fight to kill another dude. If both your guys survived, that's 2 cards your opponent is down for the 1 card you're down.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
I just don't understand why the whole card couldn't be instant. This would've been a grand slam in the deck that would use it (GW Humans). Flash fight at the end of your turn? That's how you make good cards.

"The essence of every world, every spell and every thought is power. Nothing else matters, because nothing else exists."
It's sad that previous split cards are well named and iconic, while Aftermath cards take good names and staple unreprintable, overcosted badly designed effects. It's like coming up with an awesome name and then stapling onto a 1/2 for 3R.
It also makes me wonder if somebody could Burning Wish this card too...
