Hey, if you are alright with low-par/mediocre products, more power to you.
I'm happy with products people get to play with, not sit on some collector's shelf. This product isn't aimed at me, or you. It's aimed at newer players and has enough staples to start a new player going. If this product did have decent value, it would get completely bought out by speculators and collectors.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Well, I didn't think I'd come back to the thread and see several posts that basically are pro slow heat death of the card game, but okay. It's what people seem to want to argue for by being afraid of store shelves not having product, which is really a problem on wizards not printing enough boxes because if people are buying them, whether collectors or players, that means wizards made something actually good.
That would be a few light years ahead of what has been going on the last two years now. The last actually good product I can remember was the Origins Duel decks that had Tasigur, the fetchland, and Siege Rhino along with other goodies like Anafenza. Now it's basically a 60 box set that has walkers that only hold their price because of no reprints instead of actual demand and what good reprints there are available in the set to drive sales there's barely enough to justify the MSRP. It's not like the walkers are Domri Rad or Tibalt level bad, but still.

It'll be interesting to see how well/poorly the Archenemy/Planechase reboots do. They must have had enough of a following the first go round to have a second bite at the apple. If this series is as bad as Colt47 is prognosticating, we'll know in a few years because we won't see an Archenemy 3 or Planechase 2020 or whatever. I'm also happy to see Wizards pushing the boundaries with unusual products like these. It's a different way to play the game that appeals to an audience other than the entrenched and invested players they we (mostly) are around here. If it fails, so be it. At least Wizards is trying to market the game to other segments than just its enfranchised players. Players who would analyze the EV of the list and then buy it out if it was out of proportion.
Given the fact that Wizards releases products literally every month now, it stands to reason that some products will simply not interest certain portions of its player base.
/edit honestly I would rather Wizards have a product flop like this than have another Homelands or Fallen Empires type set come out. Make sure the core of the game (standard sets) is taken care of and experiment in secondary products like this.
If they wanted to, they could even start merging ideas together. Archenemy and/or Planechase + Commander. Schemes, commanders and planes that have effects unique to it and mingling with other products.
Such as a legendary goblin who allows you to roll the planar die twice and take the more favorable result. A plane that allows players to Scry, however on the Chaos Roll they can Scry the the top card of their scheme deck instead. Etc. Etc.

To be frank, this product isn't for new players or any player of MtG. The way they built this product it's like it's designed for a non-magic player such as a board game player or something that will walk into a Walmart and just grab and go.
If it was built for Magic Players it would be composed of the Scheme cards and a reasonably well constructed Nicol Bolas Deck chuck full of value right around hour of devastations launch so as to encourage the buyer to build on the deck using the cards from that set.

I feel like their initial prints were "passable" at best and they're testing various ways for products using these "passable" alternate formats as a testing ground. I mean why did Planechase get a full anthology while Commander gets a mixed-one (I know it's not possible to print everything, but considering sheer quantity there were many other ways they could have selected the decks as well, not necessarily better or worse than the current line up) and Archenemy gets a new product with a different structure?
Although at the same time it was precisely they were "passable" and not "popular" is why they are the testing grounds - they didn't want to alienate too much people. As a personal example I had 6/8 of the planechase decks with some of the promos, so the Anthology actually annoyed me to no end - either I buy the Anthology as a full set and invalidate the 6/8 I bought (I only buy locally and no one sells planes as singles), or well, stick with my 6/8 (and hope some people out there has the missing 2/8 and promos and I eventually find them). Considering my LGS has a full set they gladly lend when I play there and my other playgroup only plays casually and doesn't really care (and neither did I) I picked the second option.
I understand fully why they made their decisions as such (I got the impression Planechase was passable enough to warrant an Anthology for the huge surplus of newer players who never saw the original decks as sealed product but probably saw the plane cards themselves) and the product was not for me, nor was it designed to specifically frustrate players like me, although it did have the unfortunate side-effect of doing so (like I said I didn't really care about the format, but it was still frustrating to some degree to be 6/8 through and have this kind of product sort of rub Tazeem-Salt on some sort of wound).
As for Archenemy, well it frustrates me a lot less, although that has to do with the format structure though - Planechase encouraged me to go get all the planes, but Archenemy didn't - I only had 1 of the 4 originals (the dragon one) and felt the 4 sets of schemes didn't actually mix as well thematically as one (so less ideas for alternate formats unlike Planechase). I feel like WotC caught on this, which is why Archenemy has no Anthology and gets an alternate product instead (which just doesn't interest me, plainly put). I built a casual dragon deck (I think it's way too different from the precon to be a redesign) back then for the dragon schemes and the Bolas/Gatewatch angle feels way too narrow for me to appreciate this product, although from the overall direction the game is going, I can see why this might appeal to newer players.
Forunately for me Raymond Swanland didn't draw anything new for the set, so I don't even have to be on the lookout for singles (well I'm going to have my hands full with the new Bolas in Hour of Devastation anyway, so thank goodness).
To make things a bit clear as well here, the reason I'm so riled up on this is that they released a good product with Commander Anthology that is overpriced due to being propped up mostly by Kalia, and then release something as horrible as this product right in the same month, and then realized they are probably going to print this thing to death and not print enough of the commander anthology. I could totally be wrong and they have a huge print run lined up for the anthology, but given they are releasing commander 2017 in the late summer that points to a run that should only be relevant through mid July at the latest.

You did point out that Archenemy Bolas was pretty much a board-game and was not intended for the enfranchised players (except for the few who really like Archenemy/Bolas). Commander Anthology, on the other hand, doesn't look beginner-friendly (mainly because when I see people get introduced to Commander it's veteran player tells new player to pick a deck and then teaches them, not new player buys 4 huge decks and puzzles over them with his friends, so even if each deck is beginner-friendly, once combined the product ceases to be so), so their release in the same month doesn't actually clash.
But yeah, I wouldn't hold out too much on your wishes - remember that products targeted towards new players are essentially marketing costs and products targeted to seasoned players are focused on profit margins. Anything with marketing is bound to come with heaps of quantity to make sure the marketing gets out (such as Intro/Planeswalker Decks, Regular Commander Decks) while anything with profit-margin-focus is either restricted by quantity or raised by MSRP (FTV, Masters Series).
I'm just wondering why they didn't jam more cards named after the PWs in the decks. Chandra's Spitfire and Chandra's Ignition are fine cards, for example.
I may also be regretting parting with all the schemes from the earlier AE decks. Those are worth money.
As a standalone, it looks entertaining, but I don't know anyone who would keep it as is, even for a game or two.
Cheers!

If in the area, check out Gamers N Geeks and Mini War Games in Mobile, Alabama and Underhill's Games in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
I also just found out that there is only a single copy of each of the Schemes in the deck. Which means eventually I'll have to sink more money into either a second one (and cannibalize the second set of decks) or see if anyone is selling the schemes as a bundle online. (A second spinny life counter wouldn't be too bad either...)

It begs the question that is it the right decision to make these products? Is there really an audience of non-magic board gaming players that are going to absorb this? There is a very good chance that wizards doesn't really know the answer, and my guess is that most true buyers are enfranchisement players interested in the scheme cards.

Except newer player frequently don’t want to dump $60 , nor are they usually experimenting with alternate formats like Archenemy. I agree that the poorly constructed decks are aimed at newer players, but that makes it all the worse for established players who want the schemes but have no need of any of the cards in the decks. There’s no way I’m dumping $60 for the schemes alone. I’ll just have to see if I can find them on ebay or something.
It's really like this product is at odds with itself. New player decks, old player schemes, hefty enough price tag to keep both away.

Yeah, having the schemes with a Bolas deck would drop the price and target a specific audience. Including the other three decks is just fluff that adds to the price but doesn’t increase the value for players who have already invested in the game.

That audience isn't there to absorb all of the product - it's just a design bonus. Any product designed for marketing purposes most likely just targets the general (non-Magic-playing) demographic, there isn't usually a specific way you can design for the general public, so they selected a subset to help reduce costs to some degree - it's still going to cost them, but I'm sure they calculated it when they designed the product. It's the same reason why it was themed around Bolas exactly at this time - it's going to get some of the enfranchised players to help chip in cost support.
Any product that is tuned for marketing simply needs supply. The objective is reach, and profit is a bonus (although they will account for cost-covering as mentioned above). That is why supply is so plentiful - it's meant to sit on the shelves and get totally random people go "I've seen this vaguely-intriguing product for months, maybe let's try it", because that's pretty much the only way they can get them to buy. None of these people are rushing to get Modern Masters 3 on release and may not even have seen a single booster of it before.
On the other hand, like you said, enfranchised players are the true buyers - it's easier to them to manipulate our buying habits. Less supply incites more rush and higher prices, which in turn means more profits (some of which in the larger system is used to sustain the marketing costs). We buy whether they put in effort or not and considering the addictive nature of the game, the output of enfranchised players really leaving the game altogether is much, much lesser than those entering by default, so it makes sense to focus most of the efforts on marketing and getting new people in, then preventing people to get out.
I'd say because of its bump up to Uncommon in Modern Masters. That and they can never leave good enough alone.

Well, cards in precons are printed at their last printed rarity. Serra Angel was printed as a rare in Divine vs Demonic even though we knew it was getting demoted to uncommon in Magic 2010. It may well be common again if it reenters standard in consideration of the price it might pull.

Yeah, that's what I said. We knew it would be demoted in Magic 2010 because they gave us it and Silence as previews on announcement significantly before Divine vs Demonic lists were spoiled. I didn't know that but it looks like they even bumped it down in the reprinting of D vs D in the Anthology despite it being rare in the original.
