It has been brought to my attenton (from reading another forum ) why the new rules are irrational, inconsistent, and self contradictory, at least according to set theory and for deck building statistics.
Combining mana costs for split cards will erroneously inflate your decks average mana cost, even if you never intend to cast both halves at the same time.
Set theory part will take longer to explain (inconvenient on my tablet to type ). In short, it makes mana cost act differently than other card characteristics. Thus inconsistent and counter intuitive and contradictory.

and yet, I've never seen anyone ever complain about spectral procession having a 6 CMC. Or the Merged Eldrazi having a total cmc of their front sides. It's only a problem when competitive decks get hurt. which is a fine discussion to have, but can we please stop pretending it's about anything else?
I have been playing Magic for decades and I think that split cards are cool, but I've always thought that allowing split cards to have simultaneous characteristics like names and cmcs was very clunky. I've never exploited this in competitive play, so I don't mourn the loss. I did understand the rules, but it doesn't make sense that you can cascade into a split card, the put it on the stack and select the fat side. However, I've always appreciated pitching Fire // Ice to Force of Will.
To the statistics people, write a new algorithm to better reflect the 'true' cmc of the split card.
