Guesswork: Er, the set is mechanically about the graveyard and the flavor of the set is Egypt Bolas world. The Invocations are a bit... weirder, I will grant you, but they're virtually all Control cards. So...I would guess the Invocations are meant to Invoke Nicol Bolas's favor.
If by "virtually all" you mean "all" then yes. The theme is most definitely control. Bolas's power over his subjects and all that.
The theme is... not so graveyardy as either Innistrad block, as far as we can tell, but there's definitely that undercurrent. Really, the true theme is Bolas's Ancient Egypt Theme Park and Fun* Plane.
*"Fun" may include misery and torment. Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited.

I give them an A for effort on the Egyptian flavor on the frame, but honestly I think they're ugly as hell. I definitely like the frames for the Inventions better.

The border doesn't bug me, it's different but not really bad. I am not a fan of the font used for the card name and type. At the very least, they could have left out the hieroglyphics before the names. That's me though, they tried something different, good for them.
they look great, the text is just hard to read which is annoying
It's the text that absolutely ruins it for me, too.
It's like everyone at WotC discovered some free Egyptian hieroglyph font online, and just thought it was the coolest thing ever and decided that it should go on everything related to Amonkhet.
I guess we should be thankful that the rest of the set and the player's guide isn't also in this font?

Not sure if Chain Lightning counts as a Control card or not, honestly. It's the only outlier so far.
OTOH, I personally think that Amonkhet will be more GY-oriented than SOI block. SOI interacted with the GY mainly with Delirium but it was all stuff going on outside the GY that 'mattered'. Except for the Zombie tribe, naturally. Amonkhet with Embalm and also possibly that Flashback-like mechanic is more likely to be a 'GY as a resource' block.
These are great looking, however I do find reading the names to be somewhat of an annoyance. So now I'm looking for Lightning Bolt, Damnation, Force of Will, Brainstorm

Pact of Negation is also definitely a combo and not a control card.
Mixed feelings on these. My immediate thought is that I really liked them, but not totally positive I do. They're very different though, and I do like that. Plane-specific kind of frames is something I'm very much in favor of. I'm not totally positive I love them, but I'm at least in favor of things like this, possibly not this intense.
I really like the looks of them. And I'm glad WotC decided not to shoehorn a particular archetype into this series of Masterpieces like all enchantments, or instants, etc
This vid shows them off better. I...kinda like em better that way.

I really wish Wizards gave us non-foil options. The only thing good about a foil card is the money I have in my pocket after I sell it for the non-foil version. I hate foil cards because you can not see the art as the artist intended. For these masterpiece cards we can only ever really appreciate the art online.
Wow, these are... striking. I definitely didn't expect this.
I think choosing to take risks on the Masterpieces was smart on Wizards' part. With that said... I'm not sure how I feel about these cards yet. I mean, sure, they're interesting, but do I really prefer these over set foils? Contemporary Magic cards already look sleek. These just appear to look different for differences sake. From an aesthetic perspective, I'm not sure I actually prefer these over ordinary cards. They're certainly neat though.

I like the frame (total Egyptology nerd here), but I am underwhelmed with most of the art. Aven Mindcensor looks glorious but for a lot of the other ones the art feels a little bit barren and simplistic...maybe that's the idea, to invoke ancient and powerful Magic (as in, Alpha-Beta art) but for instance that Counterspell is pretty uninspired.
the text and formatting for the names makes it very difficult to read them, the border is just... very visually unappealing, throw in new art and you're forced to read the card text to realize what these are.
