I wonder: Would the cards have been better if the art was styled after Egyptian hieroglyphs, or are players content with the digital art which has in the past been claimed to look like crappy CGI (though I vehemently disagree)?
Please destroy all copies of these cards are horrible
Dont destroy them, send them to me.
Or me! Hey, maybe you can get us to start a bidding war?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Wow, these cards look like trash. I have zero desire to own them. However, I'm glad they exist! If you print crappy versions of highly sought after cards (like FOW) then the price can only go in one direction, and it ain't North!
Somebody on this forum once said that WotC could put $100 bills in booster packs and people would complain how they were folded.
Oh, hush. That argument fails to recognize that the player base is not monolithic. SOMEONE is going to complain about any decision, but that's not being inconsistent or anything, and its' not surprising. The player base is large and different people want different things.
It's a stupid complaint. So you hate the design--are you going to be upset if you open one? No. You would be ecstatic after realizing you just opened a card that can be traded in for $25-$200 worth of cards you actually want. These cards don't even use up the rare/mythic slot, so you can't complain that it takes the place of a card you would rather have instead (unless it's a different lottery card).
There's only upside to this and I'm surprised by the number of people who look past that in disfavor of how it looks.
Hey, I'm with you as far as it goes: any reprint is a good reprint. Put super rare lottery tickets in packs? Why not? Doesn't hurt anyone!
But, it is also totally legitimate to ask why the company that previously gave us premium versions of cards that looked like this:
Somehow decided the right design for Amonkhet was "unreadable." It's fair to express dissatisfaction with how the cards turned out. We'll see if that translates into lower prices for these, and I think it will.
I'll never not be shocked at the number of people who will blindly and staunchly defend everything a publicly traded for profit corporation does against any and all criticism, regardless of how minor. The Hasbro Internet Defense Force is alive and well.
And that "$100 bill" meme is one of the dumbest things to ever take hold on this forum. Yeah, we've all seen it, and it's not a particularly compelling argument. The implication is that you should just shut up and appreciate what Wizards is doing, because they are benevolent masters and certainly not primarily beholden to shareholder profits above all else. That these masterpieces are a wondrous gift to the masses and therefore above criticism, and not a cynical attempt to exploit gambling psychology to increase product sales.
Oh, and stop saying "if you don't like them send them to me ". Every time people criticize a card a bunch of jokers feel the need to post this useless comment.

On the other hand blindly hating against everything Wizards does IS pretty common around here. I understand that people don't like this card frame, but when they begin to tell people who like it that they are objectively wrong and stupid for doing so, that's where I draw a line. Also shouldn't you be glad then that the card frame is so bad? I mean if it is, then the reaction will be pretty bad towards it and Wizards might not gain anything from it. They would have to admit their failure (from my experience they almost always did, for example stating that BFZ was horribly designed) and not repeat this mistake. So what is the problem? Did you want bling cards which are great and everyone wants so that Wizards gains even more money or not?
I personally like the design, but I understand why others don't. It's simple as that.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.

If they had at least commissioned heavily stylized artworks for them that fit the style of the frame, these invocations would be passable. But these realistic, lots of lighting effect-using, digital artworks makes the composition look completely off.

See, we're not talking about two equal even sides here. It's not like there are a group of blind "haters" versus a group of blind "defenders". We have a forum with many different posters here and in a large group there will inevitably be some people who have criticisms about everything. These people are not necessarily going to be the exact same people every time criticisms are levied. If you have a valid response to criticisms then by all means engage in a good faith discussion but people going all HIDF and trying to shout down criticism of their favourite company is sad.
And if you're taking issue with people saying that people are stupid and wrong for liking these designs (which I haven't personally noticed, but whatever) then why not call that out? That has nothing to do with people deflecting valid criticism with dumb overused cliches about $100 bills.
And to be clear, I'm not blindly opposed to Wizards making money. I just think it's important to always remember that corporations are not our friends, shareholders are their #1 concern, and they will never do anything if they don't think it will make them more money. These premium cards are not a gift that we should be grateful for.

I do agree with you, for the most part, but I also like the lottery cards (mostly because I don't have a gambling addiction). What I don't like is the fact that these lottery cards are in EVERY SET. It's going to get obnoxious and, eventually, players will stop paying for them as they become less special in an ever-flooding market of bling.
Somebody on this forum once said that WotC could put $100 bills in booster packs and people would complain how they were folded.
They couldn't be more right
WotC isn't giving us $100 bills. It's charging us for them. The packs with the $100 bills, or Masterpieces, cost money. And if those $100 bills started turning into really ugly $80 bills, that would be worse than the $100 bills we were getting, right?
Stop it with the false equivalency. These cards are ugly. No, I'm not going to throw a Invocation away if I open one. I'm just going to be annoyed it looks like crap and hopeful that I can trade it for an Invention.

Every time there is a chase card - the booster pack becomes a lottery card. This goes way-way back when magic cards suddenly had a value to them. The only booster packs that were not seen as lottery cards were Homelands, Fallen Empires and Chronicles.

I mean, as a general rule I wouldn't call most of Wizards practices predatory, meaning that the best thing for them to do to make money is also the best thing for the consumers. I don't think it's universally true, but at least as a general rule for how TCG's work I think Wizards is pretty fair.
I also think that generally a lot of the criticism isn't super constructive. It's more "it looks bad", which... doesn't really help with actually articulating why it's bad. Some certainly are saying why, but I would say the majority of responses have been much more emotional than critical, positive or negative.
As far as myself personally, I'd rather not see a huge amount of negative backlash which leads to them just doing Kaladesh Inventions or Zendikar Expeditions again. Things that feel more unique are a big plus for me at least, which is why I'd rather see something much closer to this in the future than anything else.
I took a second look at the card frame and the only thing that I don't like are the two bidents with their colored background: they just don't mesh with the rest of the card frame; the colored background is slightly wider than the columns.
I always like how the old card frame presented the art better than the modern one: it was designed (amateurishly, it must be said) as a kind of window into another world. The amonkhet invocation reuse the same idea. I'm fine with that.

Its bad because the frame is too thick and dominates the pictures, which are struggling to impress even at the scale of regular cards. Its bad because the pseudo hieroglyphic lettering is cheesy and reminiscent of a cartoon that's trying to convey an ancient egyptian vibe. Its also hard to read but then I don't think its really an issue at this level of rarity. Its also bad because the stone and pillars of the frame are done in some sort of 3D that looks highly artificial - neither like real stone nor like a drawing of one. The color bars seem wildly out of place making it feel like a collection of stripes rather than a doorway or temple wall or whatever.
IMO its supposed to be like Ancient Egyptian art - monumental and imposing, but comes off as fake and kitschy.
To be fair, I thought the Kaladesh inventions frame was extremely gaudy as well but all in all they fit better into the game itself.
PS: Don't get me wrong, I'm not outraged or anything. The only way I'm getting one is at prerelease and even then if I should be so lucky I'll be happy that I can trade it away for something valuable. I really don't care. But you did ask the question...
Also art is meant to provoke an emotional response so it natural that people may not be able to put their like or dislike into words. They just have a gut feeling. SOmetimes that is enough
I don't think I asked any question. Maybe I implied one, but I already know there are people that articulate a stance better than good or bad.
And I think emotional responses are fine, but if something more concrete isn't given Wizards could get a very different reason on why these aren't as loved. I don't want them to play it safe and make them as neutered as the previous Masterpieces.
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I can't wait till I can play my bicycle land out, thus making me heckbent, while I have Nessie on the field. You know, so I can attack with my Pervert.

Stop making so much sense, you're making the haters look bad.
To get back on track:
If you like these cards then you're objectively wrong and I hate you. I also hate Wizards and Hasbro who are wrong as well.

In his Second 100 days - Yawgmoth's Bargain is unrestricted in Vintage.
What is going to happen in the Next 100 days!!!
Better than the textless version.

Looks good! Though a larger artwork and more vertical, symbol-ish textbox would be golden as well.
I think the pictures are funny enough with the "choose two" words somewhat out of place.

Somebody on this forum once said that WotC could take a dump in booster packs and people would defend them if the turds were shiny enough.

I always like how the old card frame presented the art better than the modern one: it was designed (amateurishly, it must be said) as a kind of window into another world. The amonkhet invocation reuse the same idea. I'm fine with that.
