For most of them I had to read the card text to figure out what it was, since the card name is so hard to read. Plus, they are ugly.
I can imagine sacrificing form for function, or function for form, but falling down on both?
Not hard... u look at the midle of the card name box and figure out how much left u have to see before u see the begguing of the name and then read as normal
Obs: all the actual letters are between | | like : &&@?@%#|CounterSpell|¥£€+^>{£
I'm not normally an obstinate malcontent, but these are ugly on every level. Mostly unspectacular art, an ugly border that encroaches on said art, near-unreadable card names, centered rules text, and the worst offense: ALL CAPS IN THE TEXT BOX!
Overall, these things look like some lesser company's shoddy attempt at a Magic knockoff. I can't imagine them being anything but trade fodder if I should pull one.

If they are to to so this extreme change they should have made the art egyptian heiroglyphic art on papurus, much like the text box. It would invoke the idea of ancient scrolls, containing spells and what it does. Back to magic roots.
I would reserve final judgement until I see the actual cards. As a cube collector I merely need one good one to add to the cube, Ideally a God, to maximize the flavor, and perhaps due to the long name, push the heiroglyphics out of the card name.
I for one liked these frames the moment I saw them; they're the most pimped-out of the Masterpieces yet. I picked up on the text almost immediately. You think this is hard to read, try the Ancient Mew card from the Pokemon TCG ages back.
Of course, I can already see how this is going to play out: Maro will answer a comment on Blogatog responding to one of the vocal minority detractors answering that the frames received positive response from the majority of players, and then those vocal minorities will get all butthurt that most of the player base liked something they didn't and post hateful messages on sites like this, and then get 15+ votes from their vocal minority buddies as if hating on something was clever or original. Meanwhile the rest of us will quietly ignore them and enjoy tucking our Egyptian-style Masterpieces into our decks and showing them off at FNMs.
I will acknowledge that the frames can be a little hard to read at a glance; the extra symbols crowding the stylized text don't help. But once you figure out where the text is, you'll be able to read it as easily as a regular Magic card. Yeah, VMs will complain about it, but they like to complain about a lot of things.
That said, if someone here doesn't want a particular Masterpiece, I'll gladly take it off your hands.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Of course, I can already see how this is going to play out: Maro will answer a comment on Blogatog responding to one of the vocal minority detractors answering that the frames received positive response from the majority of players
Mark Rosewater actually polled people on Social Media and the response was overwhelmingly negative. The main reaction was praise to Wizards for doing something different but criticism for how the Invocations looked nothing like Magic cards.

MTG social media is biased towards heavily enfranchised players. And keep in mind a voluntary polling system will always bias extreme responses as people are more motivated to go out and say them.
We also haven't gotten them in person, and from videos posted by WotC people it looks like they look better in person.
That's a LOT of countermagic.
I really hope that:
A- Mana Drain is in Hour. That seems almost a given looking at this list!
B- Amonkhet proper has some decent countermagic in its own right.
I'm not sure... Wizards once said 'they need to be hit by a bus before they reprint mana drain'
I would like to see Mana Drain and Mental Misstep reprinted

Wizards wanted to generate a strong reaction and they are certainly going to get one. I think with a couple of tweaks these could have been wonderful. As it is, they are an eyesore. If there's anything Wizards should learn from these mistakes (and this frame is a mistake, although an ambitious one)it's that players want more art in the frame, not less.
Also worth noting that these are nearly impossible to sight-read at a distance. Understanding the spell being played in coverage is going to be a chore.

That was talking about being in a standard set, these aren't part of the main set and are not legal in standard, so it's a different affair. The problem with reprinting mana drain is broken, but if you aren't putting it anywhere it isn't already in (besides every once in a blue moon in limited), then that's not an issue because nothing changes.

I see a few hundred responses total, but perhaps my prediction is wrong. Like I've already pointed out, yes, the name and typeline are hard to read thanks to the symbols crowding the English text, I'll reluctantly concur that the all-bold rules text isn't the easiest on the eyes, and I would have kept the color in the mana symbols and kept the power and toughness horizontal to maintain consistency with the regular template, but I like the experiment.

The change I would have liked to see was an expanded art frame similar to the full art mutavault, surrounded by the Egyptian border. I think it would have nicely blended the desires of the groups that wanted elegance and readability with those who enjoy the baroque Egyptian decor.

I don't mind the template but that title font is absolutely hideous and gaudy. It's almost as bad as that fake "Asian" brushstroke font that bad English dubbed kung fu movie boxes used in the 90s. The worst part about this is that these are going to be the default mouseover cards for all of these for years to come.
I very quickly tossed a border on the bird wizard. I figured the size of the art on these was more of an optical illusion than it is. Looking at them side by side, that's obviously not the case. Even with the 3D effect removed, it'd still be smaller. Addressing another complaint, I actually think it looks more "like a Magic card" with the border, which isn't surprising. What is though, is I might have liked them better with a border. Obviously, things would have to be adjusted.

The crowding of symbols and vertical numbers are very ancient Egypt-y though. I'd be sad to see them changed. All in all, these are probably my favorite frames, but I've been in love with Egyptian mythology for longer than with MTG. I don't think that's the case for most of the people complaining here.

And again with the ALL CAPS, it feels less like the card is shouting at me, but in a monotone, dullard kind of way.
