I'm not sure if there's a judge in the house here, but if there is, I have to ask you something: isn't there some sort of rules stipulation that says tournament legal cards (when presented in their unaltered state) need a black or white border on them? If so, how do these work around that?
Oh wow, I didn't even notice that!
If these cards are indeed "borderless" (and it appears they are),
they may look better in person than they do here.
As for your rules question,
if they need to, they will change the rules.
There's *no way* they're banning bling fodder of this caliber from tournament play—
that would be terrible PR.

I saw one of these on my facebook feed and came here to find out more. I mean, ****. Why did they do this...I have taste, and I can't stand these. Cards are supposed to be recognizable, but these are not remotely recognizable. I wouldn't be surprised if these got banned from tournament play because every time one is played the opponent will have to scrutinize the card to know what card it is.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
The Kaladesh Inventions borders were different enough to be really cool and interesting without being overwhelming. But these, I'm not sure it's possible to come up with a more overwhelming layout. These honestly look like they're part of a "Top 10 Graphic Design Failures" BuzzFeed listicle or something.
Some people are saying that the art is way too small. It just looks small because the frame has been pushed right into where the black border would have been, but I'm pretty sure the art box is the normal size.
Personally I love these. Much prefer that wotc push the boat out for things like these rather than play it safe. My ancient mew is one of favourites. Though only a couple of the cards revealed so far are ones that I would want to pick up. Fingers crossed I like the others enough to buy some of this set.
God these borders are hideous. And such small windows for the art. Following "full" art masterpieces, that's a disappointment. (even if the actual black border isn't there, all the more reason that the art should have had more room to be expanded) But hey, was bound to get an ugly masterpiece border.

The Cat god casting Vindicate seems to support our claim.
I don't see how the colors work out between the five if they are enemy color. If the cat god is WB and the snake god BG, then the crocodile god surrounded by an army of dark flesh zombies under a dark sky with the head of black associated creature cannot be black and I simply don't buy that one bit.
Shards and wedges don't seem right to me with those those cards as starting points. I'm going to say they are just monocolor and these cards only have the gods casting them to fit the theme of the invocations series with the flavor backup of the gods splashing out to use different colors or something.

The black god is right next to Oketra. They're both casting shiny beams of white and black magic, respectively.
Yea but the snake god is alone on the other though
EDIT: scratch that the alligator is on thatnone too.
I can see the Corc god next to him (in front even) pretty clearly (and by just following the trace of green magic). But then again, I'm on a huge work monitor.

Gaby's stream preview is Vindicate! The white cat god is smiting some dark creature. Maybe the Gods are multicolor? The green god is smiting some creature on Maelstrom Pulse as well *hmm*
If you look carefully there's actually two Gods casting the multicolor cards so I believe they are mono color.
If it was not for the glyphs around the name I would really like these. It is hard as hell to read the name of the card. Other then that they are funky and different so of course most will hate on them at first. They scream Egypt to me so I can forgive the name. Actually like these better then Kaladesh Masterpieces.
the art looks great on these. unfortunately, it is overshadowed by how terrible the frame and especially text box looks. at least I won't feel compelled to keep any that I open. straight to ebay with that ish.

So with the trend in masterpiece frames, in about a year we will have art boxes the size of normal mana symbols with frames that take up 70% of the card.

They've already done textless cards—
aren't artless cards the next logical step?

Yep

Alligator is black
Cat is white
Snake is green
Bird is blue
Jackal is red

The worst offender is that "overhang" just below the card name.
I mean... why?!? That just trades in cool art for a very uncool frame
