Embalm is cool but also depressing.
It's essentially Flashback but for creatures instead of spells. Part of the continuing nerfing of spells in favor of permanents.
No, it isn't, it's mostly flavor based and a realistic representation of how the concept of "embalming" can be represented as a mechanic.
Anyway, the mummies being white is a controversial choice, in my opinion.

Zombies are traditionally black, sure, but they expanded into blue (which is even odder than white) in Innistrad and everybody liked them because the Frankenstein flavor was so good.
This is just as compelling flavor: The mummy coming back using the ancient rites to fulfill its duties from life. Very white.
Well as a modern player I'm happy as Embalm will probably make some playable cards (it's build in CA and there are tons of ways to get cards in your yard, interacting nicely with LotV is just one, off the top of my head) let's hope Wizards learned from recent mistakes and we'll get some playable graveyard hate and removal that exiles for the sake of Standard.

I think it expresses that the purpose of the mummies is to serve. They are tools of societal order, that's why they are white.
I'm a little surprised that Tattered Mummy is a Jackal and not Hound. Jackal being a new creature type is fine, but not sure why it can't just be hound especially when all past jackals have been hounds, kind of like Naga and Snake.
This is a bit of a different issue. A Jackal is only as much of a Hound as a Wolf is. It's like how Kaladesh made Monkey and Ape separate again after they'd been folded together.
It looks like there have been monkeys, albeit only a few before Kaladesh added a couple more.

Right, but Tree Monkey was originally a Monkey, then got changed to an Ape, and is now restored. They've decided that Jackal Pup and co. are going to be Jackals now, which is in line with taxonomy.
Hm. Does the token that enters the battlefield because of Embalm, itself have Embalm? The token Trueheart Duelist doesn't have it printed on it, but I wonder if it's implied or expressly stripped from the copy.
I know that it 99.99% of the time won't matter, because the token will never be in the graveyard to have that ability activated.
But if they print a creature that is vanilla-except-for-Embalm, whether the returned copy also has Embalm on it or not affects how it interacts with Muraganda Petroglyphs.
It's essentially Flashback but for creatures instead of spells. Part of the continuing nerfing of spells in favor of permanents.
My thoughts exactly.
You guys understand that every single Embalm token dies to Fatal Push, right? There are SO many answers to creatures in Standard right now.
Also, remember that card with the wonky frame that was spoiled a little over a week ago? Instants/sorceries with a Flashback variant, remember? Cool your jets.
Did people whine this much when Undying was revealed? That mechanic is generally more powerful than Embalm in most circumstances.
I'm actually really excited by those vanilla and french vanilla uncommons.
Also Jackal returns as a creature type! This might be the answer to what the vaguely canine deity will be based on. Mr. Jackal and Mr. Ibis. Errata incoming for five nice little 1-drops and a creature with shadow. Not though for the bunnies.
THe white godess is called Oketra. OketRA, get it? O-[sounds like "cat"]-ra, get it?
So much good flavor text. Since capricorn people are confirmed Minotaur, I wonder whether crocodial people will be Viashino... (Have we seen any human-sized of those?)

- Perforated token cards are interesting. My first thought on the embalmed one was it would be used if you didn't have the token. Bricks are funny, cause every time I use them, I'll say "this guys *****s a brick", cause that's how I roll when I play.
-Yay for jackals instead of hounds!
-White mummies make sense, they are flavourfully very different than a regular zombie.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I can't wait till I can play my bicycle land out, thus making me heckbent, while I have Nessie on the field. You know, so I can attack with my Pervert.

It is a shame that Tattered Mummy isn't in boosters, because I'd draft multiples of it. It's a pretty good common.

Probably why it isn't in boosters too good for limited at common, but not quite powerful enough for uncommon

I have 2 thoughts on this:
1. It makes it easier if you don't have the token of the embalmed creature
Or
2. There will be a creature or enchantment that gives creatures in your graveyard embalm.
Or both
Removal is going to be even worse now that creatures have "flashback". Just as we got ourselves a decent piece of removal.
I just started wondering why the punch out was necessary and you probably hit the nail on the head with #1.
I don't know if the brick tokens are necessary though.

Both, I'm sure. For the latter, if not in this set then in Hour of Devastation.
