On topic, the oracle card is a really neat design, will be fun in EDH and might see play somewhere else. Hard to evaluate the dragon until we know what exert does. I'm guessing we will be seeing a lot of it since it seems like an attacking option and they didn't feel the need to reminder it on the rare. I suspect the -1/-1 counter theory is correct as it will support other themes in the set.
Why wouldn't they reprint Miscalculation? Is there something broken about it? It seems to be a slightly better Mana Leak cos you can get rid of it when ML is no longer viable. But it doesn't seem busted.
Generally speaking, they have been very careful about anything close to leak's power level. I believe they described it as having a format warping effect last time it was in standard. Recently, with the "weak answers" standard philosophy, they've been unwilling to even approach an efficient 2cc counterspell. Either way, miscalculation is on the same level as leak, better some of the time, but worse others. I suspect it would be fun to try in Modern and very good in standard, which is why they probably won't print it under their current design philosophy. See spell snip and revolutionary rebuff as examples of where they prefer counterspell power to exist, currently.
Lol those cards are garbage. Third turn force spike Gave it cycling just so that you can dump it immediately before it gets the opportunity to become useless.
Meanwhile Fatal Push, Heart of Kiran, Gideon....
Let's say I understand the weak answers philosophy, but then what's the philosophy behind overwhelming "challenges" - hyper aggressively costed creatures, planeswalkers that win on their own if left unchecked etc. If something is neutered that just means something else will warp the format...
Well, I think there are several possible reasons for the pushed threats syndrome we currently experience, but it probably comes down to some combination of good threats selling packs, promoting more active gameplay, and mythic rares needing to be good (again, to sell packs; most of the problematic threats tend to be mythic, but not all of them). They have also suggested that having one's cool threats answered can lead to "feel bad" gameplay. None of these things are wrong, exactly, but this particular philosophy may have been pursued to an unsustainable level.
I am hopeful that Amonkhet can right the ship, as the concept for the set feels pretty neat, but it is still early to judge where their philosophy is. There is also the concern that the "weak answers" philosophy, that they have noted they are adjusting, is likely still in effect for AKH, as it would have been finalized before they realized they made a mistake.

Guys, please tell me what is the difference between:
a) You may exert ~ as it attacks. When you do,...
b) When ~ attacks, you may exert it. If you do,...
Because b) is the current template for such triggers. What's the reason to change it?
It's probably a relic from playtesting. Under A the two happen simultaneously.
Under B one happens, then the other independently.
So if there was a restriction about exherting tapped creatures, or that exerted creatures couldn't attack A would get around it.
Also A means that attacking is the only way to exhert. (Accord to the article I read)
Glorybringer wording is strange. It can be activated even if it enters the battlefield tapped and attacking, correct?
"Non-Dragon" restriction is unusual too. Don't know shat should it mean.
"Non-dragon" in this context is simply any creature whose creature type isn't "Dragon." Wizards doesn't want Glorybringer's Exert ability to hit other dragons.
Yes. I just wonder why. "Target creature without flying" is more typical for red. But as Atarka EDH player, I shouldn't complain.
I see what you mean now. I think historically, Wizards designs Dragon attacks to hit flyers and non-dragon flyers. Also, Wizards seems to keep some flavor in mind for red. Earthquake only works on non-flyers, but Lightning Bolt hits flyers and non-flyers.

Actually they just want to avoid the situation that it shoots itself , on your side or the opponents.
I hate the non-dragon clause on Gloryseeker's Exert ability. I would so love to be in a situation where I'm like "Oh no your Gloryseeker burned my Gloryseeker but thats ok I'll play Gloryseeker and burn your Gloryseeker".

This makes you wonder why non-dragon was necessary. Right now there are only 6 Standard dragons (which see zero play thanks to them basically being intro pack rares)and there will probably only be one or two more this entire block, not to mention the chances of this being redirected back to itself are practically zilch, even outside of Standard.
I'm thinking that the no-dragons clause is thematic; Nicol Bolas is the leader of this plane, and this dragon is the Gloryseeker, so it probably wouldn't want to piss off it's literal god.
The thing is, since NB is probably going to be a Planeswalker, with the "target creature or player" clause, NB is one of the few dragons Gloryseeker WILL be able to hit.

Um, what? The wording on the exert ability is "target non-dragon creature an opponent controls", it doesn't let you target players at all. I mean, you're still attacking them, but Gloryseeker isn't coming down and dealing 8 to the dome.

Ah ok, my bad. I misremembered the card (and work blocks most images so I didn't have the card handy to look up), and thought it had a "Target Creature or Player" clause on it for its Exert. In that case, yeah, Non-Dragons does fit perfectly well thematically. He's bringing Glory from Bolas, and doesn't want to be harming Bolas or Bolas's creatures.
Of course if Ugin shows up Glorybringing might need to change his tune. But on Amonkhet, all dragons are likely from Bolas, so harming a dragon would be akin to harming Bolas.
I wonder if Arlinn Kord or Always Watching end up being the better Exert enabler for a janky standard deck.
We might need something a little bit more spicy than just the dragon as payoff though.
Tomorrow we will get to see the full mechanics article, and hopefully they show off more cards so we can get a better idea of what colors Exert will be in. I'm hoping it stretches into Green.
I'm trying to think of what else we could see for Exert. The possibilities are numerous.
