This change now puts the Announcement Date suspiciously in line with Wizards' anticipated E3 attendance (June 14th-16th).
Maybe it is to build hype for a possible general public reveal of Next at E3?
E3? So Wizards have a new digital game coming or what?
That's the Million Dollar Question.
Previously, Magic the Gathering was listed as a partipant. As of today, it isn't anymore.
Oooh, a stand-alone, not card-based game set in MTG world? It isn't that far-fetched, since they seem to be turning Magic into a franchise. Also, between MTGO and Duels, I think there is little room for another game copying the paper version...
FPS game like DOOM that takes place on New Phyrexia?
MMO game like FF14 that takes place on Ravnica?
Survival Horror game like RE7 and takes place on Innistrad?
Platformer/Metroidvania game like Hollow Knight that takes place during the two Zendikar blocks?
And I hate Theros. But many people love both and are very eager to see their return.
Difference is, this would be a second return to Ravnica, not a first.
A far more important difference is that for Ravnica it would be nearly 6 years(the proclaimed minimum they should wait) while Theros wouldn't even be 5 years which is too close.
If all the hype just leads up to the movie, then that's basically a microcosm of everything wrong with the game right now. The only good that can come out of a MTG movie is it nets Wizards a ton of extra dollars to spend on R&D and such, you know, stuff that actually impacts the game.
Wizards, every day for the past month and a half: "Oh man we've got SO MANY AMAZING THINGS to share with you on announcement day at the end of March, you're gonna love them! WE ARE MAKING SUCH A BIG DEAL OUT OF THIS. Just hang in there until March 31st!"
Wizards on March 24th: "We're delaying our announcement day by another three months. BUT JUST HANG IN THERE! You're gonna love it!"
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.

Stupid as hell.
Yeah, that sucks. They could just announce the next block and maybe some supplemental products on the 31st and keep all the extra stuff for the later date. More smaller announcements would keep the hype train running smoother.
Ussually they only announce the name of a set/product and it's symbol with a very brief description of the product. I find it strange they can't even do that.
I hope its not a return to Mirrodin/Ravnica or any set past Alara. Mainly because there are still so many worlds we haven't returned to, like Lorwyn or even Shandalar. I have always wanted a set to be based in Shandalar mainly because of the effect an abundance of mana had on that plane.
Neither Lorwyn or Shandalar are likely to ever get a return block. According to MaRo, Lorwyn is their second lowest rated set since they started doing market research (Only Kamigawa scores lower), so it's highly unlikely we'll ever see the plane in a block setting again. Shandalar, IIRC, was made purposefully generic to fit the needs of the Core sets, then they decided to ditch the core sets so they simply don't need it anymore.
MaRo's oppinion (so take it with a grain of salt) is that we should only return to a plane every 6 or 7 years (We returned to Innistrad after 4.5years, and they felt that was just a bit too soon, I guess), and it's been just about that long since we've been to Ravnica (in a block setting), so I wouldn't be surprised at all with a return there soon. Particularly with it serving as the Gatewatch's home base.
IMO, if a Return to RTR doesn't feature a heavy dose of the CONSEQUENCES FOR THE LIVING EMBODIMENT OF PLANAR LAW ******* OFF TO PLAY HERO ON EVERY PLANE BUT THE ONE HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE STEWARD OF, then I'll be extremely dissapointed.
Seriously though, I really hope they do some sort of return to Dominaria and actually recognize MTG's rich history. I'm expecting yet more Gstewatch-themed disappointment though, in all honesty.
That would have a $5,000 price tag.
I am also hoping for a return to Dominaria. With Maro constantly denying a return their, give more of a reason they'll return - it's called smoke & mirrors, deception to surprise us all.

Somehow I think their numbers are not taking into account the secondary market (which despite what others say, they do care about).
How can a set be considered a failure when so much post-standard (at the time) rares have sooo much value? Their formula (in the long run) worked! See attached image as proof!
I believe this announcement day would have revealed the Fall and Winter sets for 2017 and 2018, respectively. Maybe it's a huge ass surprise where we'll finally find out where Richard Simmons has been hiding all this time.

Fall 2017 set, Emrakul's Retun, and the Winter 2018 set, Return to Emrakul.
This is the most annoying thing ever not to give us anything. The only good that can come from this is fewer bad posts on youtube about each thing dissected to death for the year leading up to its release.

Wanted -Zombie Foils and older expensive Zombie stuff. High Priority- Beta Z Master/ Int. Collector's Edition.
I was kind of looking forward to Atlazan and hoping it was true (I've been waiting for a water themed set) but I'm guessing that this next announcement for the fall set will be a return to set! The wizards is hyping it it will be a return to a highly anticipated plane.
There isn't a hell of a lot of stuff they could do that would "Wow!" me. They did hit the ball out of the park with MM17, but the biggest elephant in the room is the Reserved List. Now, they can pull stuff off if they want, but...just going: "Magic Digital, woo! New sets, woo!" isn't really going to get me out of bed in the morning, right? If you're delaying this until June...dear lord, have a haymaker-windmill slam to drop on the table.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
I'm going to quote Terry Pratchet on the reasoning behind this one "It’s the hope that’s important. Big part of belief, hope. Give people jam today and they’ll just sit and eat it. Jam tomorrow, now—that’ll keep them going forever." Hogfather
Calling Ravnica 3 for Fall 2017/Winter 2018, and Dominaria for Spring/Summer 2018. Jace is going to be the protagonist of a block again soon, Ravnica is a fan-favourite block to return to in time for the 25th anniversary and for story reasons, Jace's neglect of his duties has been pretty heavily hinted at of late.
However I have the feeling that Ravnica 3 will be somewhat of a disappointment for fans-10 guild mechanics can't be crammed effectively into two sets, so the sets will instead focus on multicolour mechanics (Converge etc) and other mechanics, perhaps related to the guildless. All cards from a specific guild will share similar traits and themes (Golgari cards to graveyard stuff, Azorius cards do prisony stuff) but won't actually have a named mechanic.
They've definitely tried to make us forget with the quickly put-together Blake Rasmussen article and its mechanics and spoiled cards, and the subsequent, very weirdly executed, Invocations reveal.
I think they might have intended to just announce Atlazan as the next block, then keep everything else until June to begin with, but they found out that we already know about Atlazan so they didn't want to make the entire announcement seem like about something we already know about (assuming everything else we don't know is what they don't want us to know until June), so they just ran with this. Atlazan will probably be just a side-dish to all the announcements in June I assume.
If they were following old patterns, I find it hard to believe the FTV/Anthology/Duel Decks/Commander/EMA2/Conspiracy3 sets for the following year weren't done at all, so I'm inclined to believe there is indeed a change in supplementary products. At my most optimistic I hope they realized they had too much of those and decided to finally consolidate all of it into a "Magic Masters Set" instead, but we'll wait and see.
If it's just the same old announcement but only delayed to be put together with their other endeavors (the movie, other games...) I'll be disappointed.
Just one more reason why having an "announcement day" is a bad idea. There's one thing you want to wait on? Well, now everything else has to be delayed too.

If the Vikings were around today, they would probably be amazed at how much glow-in-the-dark stuff we have, and how we take it for granted.
There are rumors saying they'd have a testable version of MDN for GP Vegas, so that seems in line with E3 too.
That's something I believe. Good opp to get feedback from certain key people when they gather.
However, most of us likely are not going to learn anything about more about it with all the probable NDAs.
E3? So Wizards have a new digital game coming or what?
The MTG movie is no secret, MaRo confirmed it several times on Blogatog. But the only thing he is willing to say is that it is being worked on.
