Even with great color fixing, the notion of casting Cruel Ultimatum in limited is daunting.
Especially when the Limited format looks set with a possibility of someone running GoblinMoon.
I'm okay with the rarity upshift for Compulsive Research, we have pretty much of the chase uncommons and while it definitely could still be better (Spell Snare I suppose), doubt anyone is really pulling hairs over this upshift that was probably done for Limited anyway.
Am I sensing Nicol Bolas again? I mean, we're lacking the UB mythic and the BR mythic... What if they print a UBR mythic and a colorless one? With this and Augur of Bolas in the set it looks very plausible to me.
And with that, the 'rarity for limited' excuse loses ALL credibility. I am not upset that Ultimatum is in the set, but if they are going to talk about how certain cards have to be mythic to impact how often you see them in limited instead of them actually being special, this would be one of the biggest mythic only cards. Honestly limited aside it feels like a mythic. I am not mad, I just want it to be clear that the idea of assigning rarity for limited with Tarmogoyf at mythic and this at rare is clearly and completely bull.

Cruel ultimatum's casting cost is prohibitive enough that it will limit how often it sees play. We have fixing but as of yet no ramp. Also given the way the mythics seem to be divided an upgrade to mythic wouldn't fit.
You think Cruel should be Mythic for limited purposes, or am I misunderstanding?
Yes, the casting cost would make it the embodiment of 'mythic for limited'. You will never cast it in draft, if someone does I will buy one and eat it. And in constructed if feels mythical if you cast it. I don't feel that it should have been reprinted at all, there was no demand and it's not a draft card, but if it had to be in the set it should have been mythic 100%

I think you have misunderstanding for why they put certain cards at Mythic for limited purposes. It's not because it "feels mythic" to cast it in limited, it's to limit how often it shows up in limited. Cruel is so unlikely to be cast in limited, even in a 3 color format, that it doesn't matter if it shows up relatively frequently.

Oh, I understand that perfectly, it's a big part of what I was saying. It is unplayable in limited, it is valueless and a feel-bad pull and you don't want to see it hardly ever, but it is flashy, the perfect mythic

I sort of have to agree with Melkor. I think that flashy, new art possibly related to Amohket and/or being mythic could have made the card a lot easier to swallow.
I am digging the new compulsive research art, but why uncommon?

Compulsive is insanely good in Limited. It's uncommon so it doesn't show up as often.
If Cruel was mythic than people would have *****ed about a mythic slot being taken up by Cruel. They wanted it in the set. At least at rare people can occasionally try to make it work in Limited, even if it is incredibly hard.
Cruel Ultimatum at rare (go on, resolve that in Limited!), Compulsive Research at uncommon.

EDIT: Of course I meant Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker...
Wow now I can speculate we get Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker as a mythic in the set. And it does need a reprint
If they do hope it's the art from the duel deck.
