I'm actually more amazed by the articles then the previews themselves. For the longest time they basically kept denying Modern much-needed reprints because they thought they could fit it in Standard but kept failing, so it almost feels like they're apologizing for that. I certainly hope this doesn't stop them from still trying to see if Modern Staples can make it to Standard sets (the print run and MSRP still makes a difference).
The other even more amazing part is they finally didn't just consider only the draft aspect of the set - they outright stated that they dropped Supreme Verdict from the set despite being a better choice for the draft environment for Damnation because they finally realized that the reprint itself is more valuable than the draft experience (yes yes we can be a skeptic and say they're just cash-grabbing, but wouldn't you still prefer them to be doing so then not doing so with Supreme Verdict?)
I'm not going to place the set on sky-high expectations after this though, this is just the first day of previews (which is designed with most hype) and with no doubt there definitely going to be some volume of chaff rares and plenty of Limited fodder as well. It's just a matter of whether the percentages of good rares is high enough (the fetches certainly helping in this) and the quality of those good rares. They did start us off with 2 subpar cards (Stoic Angel and Domri) and 1 decent card (Griselbrand) after all.
For collectors and players it is nice to have these fetches with the holo-foil for authenticity.
This is actually a very big point. I won't be surprised if these MM ones were more sought after than the originals. Which means demand will be high, times 4 (roughly)
Also, let's not pretend that hoarders and speculators don't exist. There's a freaking infestation in recent years. If you think Jim holding 5 sealed boxes were many, wait till you hear from Ray, who has 5 cases. Oh wait Don has a dozen cases.
Do people actually think there're more cards in players' hands, rather than in albums (for sale) or sealed up in some vault? There's such a thing call artificial supply, and in MTG, there're multiple levels of it.
I think people are getting some of the argument a little wrong here. The moment a card requires you to play 4, and is featured in numerous tier decks, it's an absolute gamechanger where card prices are concerned. Anyone thinks the decision to have staples like fetches in supplementary products is a solid one is only thinking of the first 3-6 months. If Wizards did Modern Masters every year I would surely be convinced but it's clearly not.
To those that are complaining that fetches are in MM rather than a standard release:
Going back to Zendikar-Scars standard, they seem to have followed a pattern were standard has (when all sets are out) 20 rare dual lands. 10 of those can produced coloured mana on turn one (e.g. Hallowed Fountain, Scalding Tarn, Razorverge Thicket) and 10 of those can not produce coloured mana on turn one (Sulfur Falls, Temple of Abandon, Canopy Vista, Creeping Tar Pit). In each standard, each colour pair, allied and enemy, has had access to two rare dual lands, one that can produce coloured mana on turn one, and one that cannot.
This really seems like a pattern that they are committed to. If they keep following that pattern forward, then the first time they could reprint the enemy fetchlands wouldn't be when BFZ and the fetchable duals rotate with the release of the block after Amonkhet, as many has proposed. It would have to be a whole year after that, when Spirebluff Canal and friends rotate out. Now imagine that for whatever reason that block was not a good fit for the enemy fethces. Perhaps a second return to Ravnica happens before (or just after) then, and they don't want fetches and shocks in standard. Perhaps that block has a mechanic that is a really good fit for a dual land cycle that they would want to prioritise. If they couldn't print them then, they would likely print a different cycle of enemy duals and so the next opening for Zen fetches would be another two years from then.
They most likely realised that the fethclands are needed now, but at the earliest they could be reprinted in standard in the third quarter of 2018, and if that didn't work out they would have to wait until 2020. Better print some now than to let the situation get completely out of control. They will probably still be in high demand for when they reprint them in Standard in 2020 or 2022 or whenever.
Well, I must admit I was almost sure the enemy fetches would be either in Amonkhet or in the next set. Seems I was wrong.
It's not that surprising if you follow social media. Fetchlands have undesirable effects on gameplay and I suspect they will in the future circumvent Standard (i. e. printed in supplemental products and Masterpiece series).

we can stop with this tripe anytime. the problem in KTK/BFZ standard was fetchlands with fetchable dual lands and no hate for greedy manabases in sight. KTK standard had decks with about 3-4 fetches, then BFZ rolls around and manabases are all battle lands+10 fetches
fetches are just fine in standard. they will likely reprint them in a standard set again, just not anytime soon it seems as we're getting them here

I'll have to agree with the prof on this one. chances are dominaria after amonkhet, too many new players started around 2015 and even today the last ravnica set is still cheap. either dominaria are an older set will be visited, there are much more deserving planes than ravnica.

Truth. Fetches were not a problem in Khans until BFZ printed lands with multiple land types. Fetches do nothing more than fix your mana slightly and thin your deck when all you can get are basics, or on the rare case non-basics with one land type.
With the card image gallery up, we can confirm that one of the last remaining lands is either Seraph Sanctuary or Shimmering Grotto, and at last check, the set wasn't about angels.

I just want it on record that, despite owning a playset of Damnations, half foil, I am happy to hear that there will be more on the market, and the price will finally go down. Now we just need to get it reprinted a few more times, to really drive the price down...

I'm in a similar situation.
I'm happy I'll finally be able to get a foil with the "normal" frame.
I like the PC frame better, but it will be nice to see them side by side in foil.
It's also nice that the formatting here is "perfect" just like it is on EMA Wrath of God.

There is the off-chance that they break a cycle, and use a card like Shelldock Isle, Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep, or Shizo, Death's Storehouse...but I doubt it.
Please don't tell me your saying cavern of souls is now impossible
No, I'm just talking about the tail end of the lands. Cavern of Souls is still a possibility between Boros Guildgate and Crumbling Necropolis.
