Standard has been on the downswing since Theros. Khans was a step on the right direction but then it quickly turned back again, and on BFZ it hit rock bottom and apparently it will keep going even further down through the rabbit hole regardless if they noticed because R&D works a year in advance, so we won't see any changes until Atlazan at least. So they use all sorts of countermeasures to try and desperately sell Standard: Masterpieces, reverted rotation, the BFZ land promos, the bannings... And now that it has proven all superfluous, they resort to the most desperate of measures: literally prohibit the use of older sets in big competitive settings.
K, understood. Think I will continue to NOT PLAY STANDARD and just buy SINGLES INSTEAD OF BOOSTERS.
But really, why should people play Modern anymore if WotC doesn't support it?
Because they enjoy it, I guess. Just like they're already playing Frontier when it isn't even an official format.
The issue modern players are going to face is the same as legacy without more constructed support, though, especially with rules in place that prevent the use of proxies and the general dislike of proxies by the modern community. That and the big issue is that this moving away from supporting modern means the company has actively decided that the supposedly eternal format is not supportable and is bad for business, which is not a good sign for any new format moving forward. Even if they move forward with a new non-rotating format, what is the point? No one historically liked the idea of extended, and if we can expect a five year life cycle on non-rotating formats than we really are no better off.
Heck, I'm saying this as someone who is playing and enjoying frontier at the moment. It's kind of painful to admit Wizards will probably never give proper support to it or any format that is primarily constructed.

As you said it is clear WotC is stepping away from non-rotating formats, at least the ones we have now. Maybe it's possible that we'll see Extended again? It rotates, and you can find boosters from years ago still on shelves, either in big box stores or LGS's, so it might be something they consider.
It is ever a wonder why they are considering this huge step back from Modern only about 45 before MM3 releases, almost like they want less people to buy it.

I didn't realize you played for "a dozen of years". That's a long time, though it doesn't seem to qualify you to declare legacy as a healthy format which is in no danger of dying. You know what else we used to have? Extended. And vintage. And about seventy five casual formats that no one plays anymore. You know who doesn't care that no one plays any of those formats? WotC. Say it with me now, standard. Standard is the format they care about. Standard. Stop being naive. Or if you insist, then at least spare us from it. I've played magic for dozens of weeks, so you know what I say carries a lot of significance....
My mistake, you are right. But those PTQs are only accessible to people who are already going to GPs. So it's a case of the rich getting richer. The only large, official WOTC tournament within 1000KM of where I live was the WMCQ which we now lost (I can guarantee "nationals" isn't going to be anywhere near here).
I imagine people that live in areas that are well-supported by WOTC have no idea how crappy things have gotten in these past few years for the rest of us. Three years ago we had three local PTQs a year (150-250 players) plus the WMCQ. Now we get nothing from WOTC. Even PPTQs suck because the nearest RPTQ is always over 1000KM away. And quite frankly, compared to most of the world we don't even have it that bad.
I know Canada is big, but 1000km is literally the size of the country. I come from Australia and even we have a GP on the east coast once a year. On the GP schedule there is a GP at either end of Canada within the first 6 months of this year. It's no secret the US has 90% of the access to premier play, always has and always will.

"Literally"? Canada is more than 5000 km coast to coast matey, and more than 7000 km wide by road. If (s)he lives in the wrong place, 1000 km driving distance is perfectly plausible.
Fact checking aside, his argument is perfectly fine. Those tournaments were the biggest local ones for a lot of people, and taking them away is a lousy move.

-instead of three WMCQs there is one "Nationals" (Which, for Canada, will probably be held in Toronto every year)
-no more GPTs
They've taken tournaments away and added nothing. What garbage.
Going to canadian nationals every year keept me in the game for years. It was the highlight of the year for most people i know. They bounced around in canada from city to city but out west kinda gets screwed.
Lol...legacy is already "eliminated", is a "for fun" format just like modern will become in a few years. Wizards want to sell boxes and boosters, that's all. Modern (and of course Legacy) don't bring money to them so they just let them dying slowly. No Pro Tour, no WMCQ, 2/3 GP each year and just 3 months of pptq (in the worst period of the year july-august-september). It's not so difficult to understand the way where Wizards is going to...
Actually its very difficult to follow wotc logic. If cards rotating out of standard will not have any value (and they will not if there won't be large enough playerbase in formats where those cards will still be usefull) then this will mean increased expenses for T2 players. You can easily imagine what will be the result of that - a lot of players loosing intrest in the format. I fail to see how this will benefit wotc... but i'm not their sales specialist, i just play the game for a dozen of years so what do i know.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
