Nationals are back replacing the WMCQs. Standard is the official format for Nationals. The world teams are back to 3 people and 2 of them come from the Nationals.
Local GPTs are no more, but the Friday ones onsite still exist.
The GPTs going away shouldn't surprise anyone. At many locations, they often didn't get a high enough attendance to even begin. Maybe instead of moaning about there being fewer tournaments, people should actually attend as many as they can so that Wizards is inclined to create more.
Now it's clear why they haven't revealed the next WMCQ promo. According to a leak from a few months ago, it was supposed to be Inkmoth Nexus. If I remember correctly, the leaked photo clearly showed that the promo was marked and printed as a WMCQ promo, and now according to WOTC's announcement from today it seems like this promo was scrapped. Sad =\

I would imagine that they'd keep the ones that they've made as printed and shift them to being a nationals promo. So in the future they would be coded correctly, but this batch will still be Inkmoth with the WMCQ indicator.
Playing millions of cards every turn... Slowly and systematically obliterating any chance my opponent has of winning... Clicking the multitude of locking mechanisms into place... Not even trying to win myself until turn 10+ once I have nigh absolute control... Watching my opponent desperately trying to navigate the labyrinthine prison that I've constructed... Seeing the light of hope fade and ultimately extinguished in an excruciatingly slow manner... THAT'S fun Magic.
We have 2-3 users that are dramatically making this thread incomprehensible and non-productive for anyone else to possibly join in the discussion. This needs to change.

Near Mint: The same as Slightly Played, but we threw some Altoids in the box we stored it in to cover up the scent of dead mice. Slightly Played: The base condition for all MTG cards. This card looks OK, but there’s one minor annoying ding in it that will always irritate and distract you whenever you draw it. Moderately Played: This card looks like it survived the Tet Offensive tucked inside the waistband of GI underwear. It may smell like it, too. Heavily Played: This card looks like the remains of Mohammed Atta’s passport after 9/11. It may be playable if you double-sleeve it to stop the chunks from falling out. The condition formerly known as "Washing Machine Grade" Damaged: This card is the unfortunate victim of a Mirrorweave/March of the Machines/Chaos Confetti/Mindslaver combo.
[M]aking counterfeit cards is the absolute height of dishonesty. Ask yourself this question: Since most people...are totally cool with the use of proxies...what purpose do [high] quality counterfeit cards serve?

I won't be surprised if it were to show up in MM17 instead and the leak we saw a while ago is just a test print. It might definitely be the Nationals promo though, but the thing is that if so, we have just one chance to get in (one Nationals event vs 3 WMCQ)
Lol and Modern is getting less relevant... I think it's a good thing overall. Reduces the pressure on card prices.
That definitely worked for Legacy. \sarcasm
But really, why should people play Modern anymore if WotC doesn't support it?
Same reason for Vintage and same for Legacy. That reason being monetary attachment. You spent a great deal of money on vintage, but then why stay with it if it never seems to get support, what they should do is flock to legacy; rinse and repeat ad nauseum with each subsequent format.

That was my point. From WotC's perspective, Modern is only differentiated from Legacy by two things:
1) Format support (tournaments, prizes, etc.)
2) Reprintable staples
Except (1) is happening less and less, and without (1), what difference does (2) make?

''Based on this feedback and combined with the fact that we are looking at ways to highlight more current formats (i.e. formats based on current sets and accessible to all), we will be making the change back to Standard as the Constructed format that will be supported by the 2017 World Magic Cup.''
Maybe if you actually tried to make Modern accessible instead of printing garbage like MM2015 people will care about it more. I just can't believe this logic. I guess we have to brace ourselves for another failure of a set with the next MM.
Lol, give me a freaking break. MM2015 was just fine, and it reprinted alot of good cards. Also, Modern is accessible. Its easy to find all the pieces to each deck and has alot of decks at various prices.
I understand that Standard and Limited make Wizards the most money, but why are they so insistent on cutting support of all the eternal formats? Why not create a different type of tournament/league that is meant for eternal formats?
Stores really get the bone with this change. GPTs where the most common attended event around the NC area. Change to Standard sucks too. Most shops cant even fire Standard for FNM anymore.
WOTC still supports modern, they support it directly through supplemental products and indirectly through GPs. They are not supporting it at the premier level (being PTs and the World Cup) but that does not mean it is unsupported.
MM2015 was just fine, and it reprinted alot of good cards.
Not to derail the topic, but MM2015 had crappy packaging (cards got damaged), crappy foiling (personally I won't buy MM2015 foils because of the ridiculous curving) and an extremely weak selection of commons and uncommons. If they're going to give us a Modern reprint set once every two years and charge an arm and a leg for it, I (for one) certainly see some room for improvement. I do think that EMA was a much better set and a step in the right direction.

Uh... no. MM2015 was a wide-hand slap in the face to the entire Magic community. Questionable mythic choices. Extremely poor common and uncommon selection. Very top heavy value. Poor packaging and foiling. All for a higher pack price than the previous one, despite having a much lower Pack Value.

"I hope to have such a death... lying in triumph atop the broken bodies of those who slew me..."
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Modern getting less focus doesn't surprise me, they have been trying to hammer Standard into the community for a few years now, almost to the point of exhaustion.
Lol, give me a freaking break. MM2015 was just fine, and it reprinted alot of good cards.
You're kidding, right? MM2 is easily the worst of the Masters line so far, but then again they haven't been truly great anyways. Mythic and rare were the only rarities with decent reprints and 1/3 of the rares were good. After that the reprints practically stopped besides Remand, Lightning Bolt, and Smash to Smithereens. Between the increase booster price, less booster in each box, less decent reprints overall, terrible packaging, and terrible excuses of why certain things were excluded the set was incredibly bad. At least MM1 had the excuse for it's bad aspects being it being the first try and EMA was slightly better than MM2, but only slightly.
Another fine way to eliminate Legacy. They keep kicking my format in the face. **** you WotC. Seriously. Pretty sure I tweeted that at you guys before.
Legacy, in all fairness, shouldn't be a WotC-supported format. As in a possible format at a premier level (PTQ and higher). The reason is because RESERVED LIST.
Lol...legacy is already "eliminated", is a "for fun" format just like modern will become in a few years. Wizards want to sell boxes and boosters, that's all. Modern (and of course Legacy) don't bring money to them so they just let them dying slowly. No Pro Tour, no WMCQ, 2/3 GP each year and just 3 months of pptq (in the worst period of the year july-august-september). It's not so difficult to understand the way where Wizards is going to...
Actually its very difficult to follow wotc logic. If cards rotating out of standard will not have any value (and they will not if there won't be large enough playerbase in formats where those cards will still be usefull) then this will mean increased expenses for T2 players. You can easily imagine what will be the result of that - a lot of players loosing intrest in the format. I fail to see how this will benefit wotc... but i'm not their sales specialist, i just play the game for a dozen of years so what do i know.

Thanks for the news flash! I hadn't realized that I went from every Sunday Legacy show to just local small store events on cam. Can't help but fight the ebb and flow of a money grubbing company, sometimes.
-instead of three WMCQs there is one "Nationals" (Which, for Canada, will probably be held in Toronto every year)
-no more GPTs
They've taken tournaments away and added nothing. What garbage.
They are adding PTQs to all GPs
My mistake, you are right. But those PTQs are only accessible to people who are already going to GPs. So it's a case of the rich getting richer. The only large, official WOTC tournament within 1000KM of where I live was the WMCQ which we now lost (I can guarantee "nationals" isn't going to be anywhere near here).
I imagine people that live in areas that are well-supported by WOTC have no idea how crappy things have gotten in these past few years for the rest of us. Three years ago we had three local PTQs a year (150-250 players) plus the WMCQ. Now we get nothing from WOTC. Even PPTQs suck because the nearest RPTQ is always over 1000KM away. And quite frankly, compared to most of the world we don't even have it that bad.

If the Vikings were around today, they would probably be amazed at how much glow-in-the-dark stuff we have, and how we take it for granted.
