Here are some photos of what the original poster is talking about I believe. When I was opening Kaladesh, it seemed like all cards had surfaces like the Deft Dismissal. When I was opening Aether Revolt, only some of the uncommons had surfaces like this.
The Deft Dismissal has the new surface. The Thopter Arrest has the traditional surface. Both are from the same case.
Looks almost like... not sure if it's the right word, it has a moire pattern.
Interesting. I would have thought it an artifact of the camera except the thopter isn't showing the same pattern.
If I get some commons I'll try ripping them and see what the cores look like, but the feel is definitely different. The torrential Gearhulks I bought recently that I saw come out of a pack both are thinner than the cards I had from Eldrich moon and are glossier. It's really odd, but it definitely feels like a cost cutting measure.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
Why did you even bother to figure that out? Clearly the dragon ball z box isn't selling for $95 it's selling for $35. Just like when I go on tcgplayer I can get a booster box of mtg for $90 Which means I can get two booster boxes of DBZ for less than the price of 1 mtg box. The two DBZ boxes would have more cards cheaper than the mtg box. Here I'll throw out another example to show the cost of making cards. https://www.shopbicyclecards.com/ProductResponsive.aspx?ProductId=233&CategoryId=42
A deck of playing cards that they had to pay to some artists to make zombie art for sells as a single deck before discounts for $3.19 right now for 54 cards. That should show you the difference in cost of making cards right there. Also last time I checked there were 15 cards in a mtg booster pack.
550 cards for $25 a booster box of mtg is 540 for $90. There are many examples out there of the massive amount of over charging that wizards does. For them to be cheap in any way on the printing process is just wrong of them to do.
The real question is why you bothered comparing the price of Dragonball Z cards to Magic cards in the first place. DBZ is a dead game that you can no longer even buy at retail--why is its price relevant to the price of MTG cards? It's like arguing that, because some people give away Bibles, all books should be free, or because Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl LI apparel is getting sent to the developing world, the Patriots should give me a Tom Brady jersey. It's an absurd and irrelevant argument.
Your new examples are at least not being sold at clearance prices, but are still not analogous. How much art did CAH commission for those 550 cards? Apropos of this conversation, how good is the cardstock? How big was Bicycle's playtesting team for that deck of playing cards?
Yes, Wizards charges more for Magic cards than some other people charge for some other printed materials. If you want a bunch of cards, buy something else. If you want a bunch of Magic cards, well, maybe what you're paying for isn't really the cards at all, but the human talent and labor that went into making the game.
But mostly I just posted because comparing the price of DBZ cards to MTG cards is really silly.
Wizards has a lot of costs to cover beyond just the cost of physical production. There's really no way to make an apt comparison to any other CCG because they simply don't have the staff and overall costs that Wizards does.

I haven't read all the posts, but I bought a box, a bundle and the 2 planeswalkers decks (I'm located in Canada) and yes the printing is different from previous sets. Lots of big "dots" all over the cards.

I've never looked into how packs are assembled, but one of the packs in the box I bought only had 4 of the cards being miscut terribly with a large white dot on the top right corner, but the rest of the pack was fine. I have no idea if that means anything, but I figured since some of the commons were miscut, then the whole pack would be miscut. as far as the printing goes, they seem ok to me, but I see a major difference in foils as well as planes walker deck cards. Also, I agree with everyone on the C16 printing. The printing on those sucks. The colors on every C16 card are lighter than any other set in the modern frame. If you have the ability to hold them side by side, you'll see what I mean. It annoys me because I feel like the contrast (or lack there of) on the C16 cards diminishes the artwork. Or maybe it's not so much contrast but black level
I bought or rather, pre-ordered cases of Kaladesh and Aether Revolt. Neither of the two, including recent fatpacks I purchased, from both sets (like less than two days ago), all had the "old" print style, which I think we all can agree, looked much, much better. I really hope this was a mistake of some kind by WOTC. They have to be able to see that this new "mesh" or "digital block" paper design on cards, looks and feels awful. I honestly, don't want a single one of those cards in my collection, so I've made a point to only trade for what I am calling "1st Edition Printings" of KAL and AER. I'm really glad I have them, they somehow also feel like they would be worth more, for players that feel the same as myself.
