I haven't seen it mentioned but what's with the new card style in aether revolt.
Cards seem thinner. Definitely different type of ink or printing process going on. Looks like a matte finish dot matrix style or something. Almost textured looking. And the colors seem off, Very evident in the multicolor cards. Much darker and kinda bleeding. Foils are darker as well.
These are us cards from multiple locations at multiple times and styles of packs. The prerelease kit is the first noticed since Kaladesh and revolt are together and can easily see the difference when next to each other.
(Side note: Got a tezzeret promo and pulled and aetherworks marvel so pretty cool)
Yeah, it was the same with Kaladesh-
the foils have that "Intro Pack Foil" look which many people dislike
(I kind of like them myself),
and the regular cards are glossier than before.
I'm not sure if the prerelease promos are any different.
EDIT: wait, you think AER and KLD look like different cardstock?
They look the same to me, but different from earlier sets.

I'm not talking about the difference in reg or foil either.
The difference is the printing between Kaladesh ( and previous sets) and Aether revolt.
It seems pretty obvious. As soon as I opened the first pack of revolt I thought something was weird. They honestly felt fake or something. The colors on the front and back seem off as well Didn't think it would pass a bend test. They still pass and ripped open have the blue layer. They just "feel" different. Darker matte ink? Never seen that before. Usually a gloss shiny
I also noticed a difference. Even with cards of the same set.
Bought a set of fatal push today and one has an almost casino playing card texture and the other three do not

A lot of blue-core proxies have this texture. If the card is really shiny too, you may have been sent a fake.
Although selling a proxy of a $5 card doesn't really seem likely, it could still happen.

The top poster is saying that he is opening booster packs with cards that seem to be differently printed. Are there full booster packs that are being printed now as blue core proxies? I don't think standard proxies are being made. I don't think they are making fake booster packs either. I could be wrong. Wizards could have used a cheaper printing company. They don't tell us anything anymore.
Top poster said that, but this guy mentioned noticing the difference when buying singles, not opening packs.
Kaladesh was the first set I noticed with the alternative texture. If I recall correctly, all of the cards I opened were like this.
With Aether Revolt, only some of them have the texture. They've been mixed textures within the same pack, too. Commons were one texture, uncommons were the other.
I noticed this glossy texture with SOI. Before it was only supplemental products like Intro Packs, Commander decks etc. that had glossy, thicker cards. Now it's in booster sets like Kaladesh and AER. I honestly prefer it. Feels more sturdy, the inking is richer and more saturated which makes the artwork look great. I hope they continue with this higher quality printing. I was getting tired of hunting down "glossy" versions of cards from Intro Packs and all that just to get the darker, thicker, glossy versions of cards.
I think this might vary with geographic location and/or print run. I'm in EU, SOI and Kaladesh looked fine here afaik, but all the EMN foils I've seen have been the dull looking type that I recognize from MM15 and intro packs and such. Same with AVR back in the day. I don't mind too much when it comes to the non-foils, as I barely notice the difference, and not at all in sleeves, but I hate it when the foils look bad. I had some Grim Flayers that all looked like intro pack foils. It's a flashy, expensive card, so it shouldn't be like that. Same with the AVR Sigarda that I use for my commander.
I really, really wish they wouldn't skimp on the printing. We're paying $4 for a set of 15 cardboard cards, is a good, consistent print/foil quality really too much to ask for? I mean, really?

but not EMN.

Haven't noticed a change in foils as I don't use them but regular cards are definitely glossy which to me is better and preferable. Intro Pack quality sounds awful. The Commander 2016 foils look horrible too. Dark, cheap, and already bending. Wish they weren't foil at all.
I noticed this glossy texture with SOI. Before it was only supplemental products like Intro Packs, Commander decks etc. that had glossy, thicker cards. Now it's in booster sets like Kaladesh and AER. I think you are going completely opposite of what I said.
Cards in previous sets were glossy. The new Aether revolt cards are thinner and textured.
I prefer thicker glossy type cards as well, unfortunately all AER cards I have opened are thinner and textured
If I were to give advice to people who collect. Sell your collection now. In a year magic could spin down the toilet. At that point only the rarest of rare cards will worth anything. Even then if the game goes under hhmmm. I'm trying to think of a game that has gone under there are many. Lengend of the three rings, star wars, star trek, a variety of cartoons. It would be a major blow to the gaming community if magic went under.
I'm guessing Magic is too big to fail. I know I'd happily keep playing in a crash scenario. EDH, Legacy, and some other formats would be fun without any new cards ever being printed. And there a plenty of people ready and willing to design new sets if WotC abandons the game.

I can't believe that they are skimping on the card stock now. Have they just completely lost it? The quality card stock they were using was the only thing separating real magic cards from fake magic cards. So I'm assuming that the new sets are now the same card stock as the fake cards.

Just for example how much they are over charging us. A similar booster box of dragon ball z cards. I can see that the booster boxes only have 24 booster packs but it only costs. $35 dollars to buy it. I'm seeing even cheaper booster boxes at $20. Force of will seems to cost $60 for a similar booster box to magic. http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/214327
Somewhere in here we all need to realize that wizards of the coast has made massive amounts of money. $4 for a booster pack is nuts, always has been. The only issue is that wizards sells those booster packs for about $2. I've bought booster packs for $2.50. I get that companys are susposed to sell products for a 50% mark up in order to create value for their resellers. It's just that The price for paper cards has always been too high. When clearly with the example of dragon ball z cards can be printed cheaply. Maybe it's time for wizards to partially transition to a different business model. How about instead of wasting money on foil packs everything just came wrapped in cheap plastic? If they are making quality cuts might as well cut everything. Idk, I'm just very done with wizards and their constant bs. It's so easy to fix their cards game it's rather sad they are failing so miserably at making it.
Sorry man, but this seems to be a pretty big overreaction to a situation we don't fully understand yet. First of all, there hasn't been any word that a permanent change has been made. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I have been opening Aether Revolt packs that contain cards with both textures. Maybe the printing company just had a batch of unusual card stock and now they are running out. Or maybe they were going to make the change permanent and decided against it. Or maybe it isn't even the card stock that changed, but the printing process itself.
Or maybe they are making the change permanent, but it isn't necessarily an inferior card stock. I personally did not notice a difference in thickness, but I will try to pay closer attention next time I look/feel. I'll also try to get some pictures up for people to see. Unfortunately, I only have a phone camera, so they probably won't be too high quality.
Overall, there are a lot of unknowns at this point, but certainly no reason to panic or quit.
I noticed the change but it doesn't seem to me like a decrease in quality *for the main sets* but there IS a decrease in quality in the card stock of the Commander product this year (C16). The foils look awful and the non-foils feel thinner. But SOI, EMN, KLD and AER, even Conspiracy 2 all have high quality print card stock from what I can tell. I enjoy the glossy matte finish. I do feel the best card stock was in the old Intro Packs (where the cards were thicker and glossy). It seems to me that the quality of booster sets increased but the supplemental products, at least C16, were flimsy this year.
I hadn't noticed but then I have to play with Yu-Gi-Oh and MLP as well and all cards go straight into sleeves (the hazards of having young pseudo-clones).
Did anyone try and weigh them to get some ball park figures?
I also noticed a difference. Even with cards of the same set.

I examined the cards and I am 99.9% sure none are fakes - that doesn't make sense on an uncommon purchased days before release...
I have also noticed that more often than I used to see it - there are cards with varying thickness of font (almost looks like it was over-printed or something) in cards I have pulled from packs. This sort of misprint indicates to me an overall drop in card quality. I also opened up a commander 2016 deck that had all sorts of strange color errors where half of the card is missing the final layer of black ink. Probably a clogged head, but where is the quality control? Not complaining on these - without the black ink the cards look very interesting and unique...

I feel like the commander 2016 cards had something similar going on. Especially with the foils. They have about the thickness of the Chinese counterfeit cards. And the majority of mine came out of the box warped. I hope it's a fluke. They like to change their process every few years. I feel like they've caught failures in the past (the super saturated mirage printing process comes to mind) I hope that's all it is. Mtg is teetering very close to losing me again. If this block is equivalent to urzas saga (combos galore, artifacts everywhere) then we need to prepare for amonkhet to feel like masques. If anyone was playing back then, you'll know what I mean

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Here are some photos of what the original poster is talking about I believe. When I was opening Kaladesh, it seemed like all cards had surfaces like the Deft Dismissal. When I was opening Aether Revolt, only some of the uncommons had surfaces like this.
The Deft Dismissal has the new surface. The Thopter Arrest has the traditional surface. Both are from the same case.
