If you don't cast Kari Zev herself via her Expertise, the next-best creature to grab is probably Forerunner of Slaughter. It has a power of 3 so it is able to crew almost every vehicle you may have or have stolen without any assistance. No, wait...Veteran Motorist--okay, that makes two really good options, both with power 3 (and the motorist gives the vehicle a +1/+1 boost).
(I guess Kaladesh is that sky pirate world I've been asking for after all).
You kids today with your collectors numbers and your newfangled tap symbol! Sky pirates in Mercadia making people sacrifice permanents, now that was real magic.
Well, RG Energy might want her (even though she doesn't produce E herself). She's aggressive as hell and hard to block. I personally want to see her in good "RDW" (Red Deck Wins) or "Mono Red Aggro" style decks as well. She, Yahenni, and Baral are easily my favorite Legends of AER and the KAL block over all.
Yes, 3 power and 3 toughness for two mana is not good enough. She needs to be better. Flying would be perfect because humans usually fly. I think she would be a good 7th pick in draft.
She's on a flying ship is why I proposed it. I think she is very good but not "great." It's also unfair to say she has 3 toughness. At best she's a 1/3 first strike menace that reads, "when this creature attacks, deal 2 damage to target opponent." I'd be happier with her if the monkey were allowed to stick around.

So any deck using her as commander has to be called "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey," right?
On topic, three power and four toughness over two bodies on every attack for two mana is already pretty nuts. Add in that the pirate has to be gang-blocked, with none of the blockers having 1 toughness, and that the monkey triggers revolt every turn, and you're looking at an insane card. If there's a red-based aggro deck to be had in Standard that isn't dumping all its mana/bodies into crewing Copters, this will be a component.
Just realized that along with the Plunderer, these are the first standard-legal (normal set) non-changeling Pirates since Mercadian Masques (Conspiracy: TTC and Smuggler Captain does not count).

In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
So I'm gonna need an alter to make the monkey named Jack. I doubt I'd be the only one.

I like that we have a red Pirate that produces a legendary token. I believe this is the first legendary token we've seen since Tolsimir Wolfblood and Voja, if I'm not mistaken? No, wait, we had Nissa, Sage Animist back in Origins, and before that Dark Depths and Tuktuk the Explorer. Still, neat to see another legendary token, and the first animal buddy since Voja.
Anyway, this has got to be foreshadowing for an upcoming Pirate block with red Pirates in it.
Kari should fit right in to many an Alesha deck. Once she has more red Pirates to play with, she'll also be a decent tribal Commander in her own right, though I'm hoping Pirate block gives us an awesome Grixis Pirate legend (preferably based on the most infamous pirate of all, Blackbeard himself) to build around.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Seriously? A pirate that makes MONKEYS? This is the goofiest card I've seen in a long time, what I love is that it's a very good at the same time. It's aggresively costed, comes with evasion right of the bat, and triggers Revolt effects. Looks like a star in Limited and a very good option for RDW, also, makes friggin' MONKEYS, c'mon Wizards, give us a a green/blue pirate that makes Parrots too, hey, there's a precedent for that.
I believe this is the first legendary token we've seen since Tolsimir Wolfblood and Voja, if I'm not mistaken?
Nope, we had Ashaya, the Awoken World in Origins (produced by Flippy Nissa).
Likely the first produced by a creature since Tolsimir, though!
EDIT: Nice ninja edit, Manite! We could keep this going all day and no-one would know...
You know, it's funny: As of "Flippy Nissa" (which sounds really adorable by the way), I do believe we have a legendary token-producing card of every card type except enchantment. And before anyone gets cute by mentioning Heliod or Pharika, I'm talking about cards that produce legendary tokens, not legendary cards that produce tokens. Though incidentally all cards that produce legendary tokens so far are also legendary themselves, or the equivalent thereof.

Sexy legendary sky pirate lady with a killer attack monkey? I'm sold on flavor alone. But she and her simian cohort are quite good for an aggressive red creature package. Conveniently enables Revolt, perhaps making for a RW Revolution deck? Or some other combination, but at the least any Revolt deck I figure will be including red. I will get a full playset for one deck, and a fifth one for one of my EDH projects.
