I didn't mention that earlier? Maybe I only mentioned it on Mythic Spoiler. But yeah, that's a sly callback.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I'm pretty excited over this card, casting cost is right w/ two great abilities, plus decent p/t per cost, whats the down side legend? lol. Can't wait to toss this into my EDH control deck and tell my opponents (after crushing them with permission) "I've got em' bent over a Baral".
They actually had to make Baral all upside because of his odd place on the curve. He's not super good in a control shell because he will get board wiped by things like Yahenni's Expertise on his own, and if someone plays a lord like Thalia's Lieutenant they aren't playing control. I've been brainstorming a UG counterspells deck that sort of works right now by tempoing the opponent, but it's very reactive and depends on Torrential Gearhulk to close the game. He may be a good play in UR counter burn where his ability to discount burn spells can really get him to shine, but that deck is slow and a spell based deck in standard just sounds like a bad idea. Rashmi, Eternities crafter works well in the counter burn / counter spell strategy, though. I'm sure a Temur deck may work even if it isn't top tier.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
When did baral get so expensive, wasn't he like $4 when spoiled?
He's a good card with possible cross-format play. Most standard control decks are going to want 4 of him, and I'm not sure what the demand will be outside of Standard but he seems like he'll have a home in a lot of blue commander decks. Storm has talked about running him, Modern control could be a thing with him at the helm.

Currently Playing:
Standard - Some kind of control
Modern - UB Mill (casual)
EDH - Meren's Grave Shenanigans
Considering that he has a couple good controlspells associated with him, and cheapens spells like Cryptic Command and Remand while also looting cards off them (so you can trade that extra Island for another counterspell, for example), yeah, no wonder he's going up in price.

every pro i read is under rating this. I can see the downsides in that he nonbos with Yaheeni's Expertise which would naturally go in a u/b or esper or grixis control shell with Liliana, The Last Hope
But he has pure buttsecks with Dynavolt spells and just a heavy blue control deck with Torrential Gearhulk and manlands as win cons

Oona is in my 99 And could be the Commander, but I prefer to use Circu to draw less initial hate. Also I don't care about his 3rd ability triggering. The deck is a lantern control/deck control. I use cards like Surgical Extraction, Sadistic Sacrament, and the like to take out key cards to prevent the deck from either comboing out or to remove any potential threats, while using the lantern control side to ensure I have near perfect knowledge of draws, and can stop any potentially dangerous draws. Combined with a strong UB control suite, it can get evil. I usually win with either Newlamog, Oona, or Helm+leyline of the void combo.

Again, anyone here worried about Baral's price needs to just sit tight and wait for release. He reminds me a LOT of Puresteel paladin back in Scars of Mirrodin and he should easily fall down to 3 usd a piece even if he see's legacy and vintage play due to the sheer number that will be on the market. The cards that are problematic right now are Herald of Anguish, Heart of Kiran, and Torrential Gearhulk. Printing those kinds of cards at mythic is not too good for peoples wallets thanks to not having a lot of alternatives in the tight cardpool of standard.

Gotcha.
Is this for group play?
My Oona deck was originally kind of similar,
but it was ineffective against groups.
I can't imagine Lantern Control scales well against three opponents.

It does decently in 3dh, not as well in 4. Mostly because I have strong enough cards to keep the pinch on (Mana drain, Isochron, ect). Baral is nice since he allows me to filter my draws better and makes things cheaper

Currently he is only about $5.50 on TCGPlayer, so I wouldn't say he got too expensive.

Just alot of value. Also can sort of combo with Scour the Laboratory
Why would you run Circu, Dimir Lobotomist as a commander?
Does the third ability even come up enough to matter?
Wouldn't Oona, Queen of the Fae or Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker work better?
