They're self replacing effects instead of being card disadvantage, but they are balanced around it to have pretty janky effects, the white green and red will never produce card advantage on their own, just a very very minor effect so its basically just there to enable revolt or otherwise fuel a sac outlet to provide CA. If the cheap ones could hit creatures, they'd be 2-for-1's for 2 mana, that would be too good, whereas at 2 CMC they're basically cycling with a tiny upside. I'd rather the blue/black had been 1 to lay and 2/3 to activate so you could actually EOT them, the blue one is certainly no inspiration variant if you have to tap out to lay it. The unhinge effect at least is nice.
also keep in mind, you draw a card before the effect resolves on any of these. For whatever thats worth.
In that case, expect me to forget all about it and make the same remark for the next unplayable cheap red trinket. Because apparently that's what I do. lol
At least it isn't flight spellbomb. I know the blue one READS kinda poorly, but its actually pretty decent. Not busted, but fair.
Man do I wish that the red one could hit creatures. even if it cost 2 to cast. Oh well, they probably have their reasons. Good for turning on revolt and artifact decks in limited.
I wish goblin welder could someday come back. or a updated version or something. cards like this would be fun in standard with him

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
Man, why does Red always get the short end of the stick in these kinds of cycles? At first I thought it said "target creature or player", but nope. It's just the world's most underwhelming Lava Axe variant in all the goddamn world. With that said you get all the cool points if you actually manage to kill someone with that. Even the White one's lifegain seems more valuable, because it buys you time to use your new stuff.
Well, aside from maybe the Black and Blue one, they seem all bad, with the Red one being in a whole other level of badness. With recursion, the B and U ones can do some damage, and the Blue one can be fetched with Trophy Mage (but why would you do that?).
If it makes you feel any better, the article's author also misread the red one, and did a whole paragraph about sideboarding it vs. 1-toughness creatures. Pretty embarrassing actually.
Even WOTC writers wish this thing hit creatures. I don't feel like 2 mana (even spread across two turns) to kill a really small dude and cantrip is busted.
I think I like the green and black ones the best. Their effects feel valuable either popping them immediately or waiting to do so.
See flare, which is 3 cmc and is absolute garbage. Creatures or players would have been fine in all likelihood, but wizards seems terrified of cantrips.

It replaces itself, but just requires 2 mana spread over 2 turns, which is not too bad. It also enables revolt, delirium, and enhances combos with +1/+1 counters. It could be a subtle piece in some combos, just greasing the wheels of a synergy.

I agree this would have been so much better
edit...but I guess the activation cost of 1 works better with "revolt" mechanic EBT effects
This is clearly a joke as this card would be great as a 2 mana draw two. Especially with it being invest 1 now and 1 at end of opponents turn to draw 2. Card would be bonkers.
No, I think the word you're looking for is "baaaaaaroken".
It's essentially an instant, too (in the sense that you get to pick when to throw it overboard, anyway), so we're comparing to Inspiration. That said, I can't see too many situations where you don't run Glimmer of Genius ahead of it...
The red one is close to being a strictly better Flare. Which almost makes it playable.

Fireforger's Puzzleknot used the same templating.

It's interesting that they haven't gone back and reworded similar cards in the Gatherer (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=393869 for example). Maybe only for very long names? Or maybe they don't back-edit things like this?
I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that!
I guess they're always tweaking their wording.

Because playing Green means playing Portal.
It honestly probably would be too good without the sorcery clause, thought
