T1 - Land -> mana Dork for example birds of paradise
T2 - Land -> Mana Dork - Isochron Scepter -> 1 or 2 mana pump spell (Blossoming Defense, mutagentic growth, etc)
T3 - Land -> Paradox Engine - Zero Mana spell (Mutagentic Growth, Gixian Probe, etc)
-> Swing with two infinite size Mana Dorks
Cryptolith Rite in Standard would be amazing with this card. I ran a Temur extra turns deck (Part the Waterveil + flashback Geistblast with mana produced from tons of 0/1 plant tokens from Nissa), but the deck lost some key pieces with Kaladesh rotation and isn't nearly as competitive. This artifact would be bananas with that deck, if I got some other nice pieces for it.
The most degenerate edh use I currently see is below.
Arcum Daggson taps to grab isochron scepter (imprint) some 1-2 mana draw/counterspell instant.
Arcum next search is to grab the Paradox Engine.
With any combination of a single 2+ mana producing mana rock you win with an infinite loop.
The benefit of this strategy is isochron scepter has literally a ton of good instant cantrip targets. If you choose a lockdown route in place of 1-2 cmc card draw you can just counterspell the table repeatedly over and over.
These pieces are also individually great on their own.
Brainstorm imprinted on isochron, with a mana crypt/sol ring/etc etc and Paradox Engine wins the game by casting your deck assuming you draw into one more free rock to generate infinite mana.
Yes you'd need a 1 or 2 mana instant to imprint but honestly how hard is that to have with blue? Also Gilded Lotus + Any blue buyback spell (capsize + whisper of the muse) is infinite with enough mana rocks.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Although I see how this obviously has use as a combo-piece in EDH and the like, I think "degenerate" and "broken" is stretching it a bit far. It's not like you couldn't already untap your mana rocks every turn with Unwinding Clock or repeatedly sacrifice things for unlimited mana with Krark-Clan Ironworks with various enablers. This costing 5 mana is a bit of a drawback, as a lot of the other things you want to go nuts only cost 3 or 4.
Not to say it's not useful -- were I still playing EDH I'd slot this right into Sharuum because why not -- but in a lot of EDH decks it's not doing anything disgusting by itself, just adding a bit of redundancy to the already disgusting format. I think best case is a fun combo deck in Standard and yet another angle of attack for artifact decks in EDH.
Seriously, though, think of how WUG benefits from this situation.
-You have Arcum Dagsson, who can fetch this out and make infinite combos with scepter.
-You have Kaho, Minamo Historian to act as a backup scepter if something goes wrong.
-You have Hannah, Ship's Navigator to revive the paradox engine if something happens.
-You have both Selvalas, who can quickly devolve into huge mana and card advantage.
-You have Captain Sissay, who can search for this guy as well as searching for Arcum, Kaho, Hannah, Selvala, legendary lands, or whatever toolbox legends you have handy.
-You have seedborn muse & Murkfiend Liege (and Unwinding Clock) to reinforce all of your untapping shenanigans if you hit delays in going infinite (and also have alchemist's refuge winding canyons, Vedalken Orreries, Leyline of Anticipation, Vernal Equinox, and Yeva to take over everyone else's turn)
-Even if you don't get off an infinite combo with the paradox engine (in spite of recursion from Hannah and protection from Leonin Abunis, Indomitable Archangel, or Padeem), Derevi is already about untapping all of your stuff.
Through in some general goodies (Aura Shards, Mirrari's Wake, Reshape, Fabricate, Praetor's Counsel), some isochron spells (especially cantrips), and a few mana rocks and...
Stop saying elves wants this, unless you are talking about standard. First, only "combo elves" wants this effect so no coco. Second,in every other format other than standard elves has cloudstone curio or intruder alarm etc which already serve that purpose. Elves have 0 interest in this card
The thing is that we still got prowess lingering in bfz and a couple of means to draw more cards from casting spells. There's also a lot of pay offs for rapid casting in standard. That deck might be a bit fiddly, though.

...Well, I know what I'll be brewing.
Beneficial to Derevi, no doubt, but does she NEED it is the question. Which card of the current archetype will lost its spot to Paradox Engine?
@Ryperior74: Actually, Seedborn still has use in decks that don't cast a lot of spells. Ghave would probably prefer Seedborn, just because Ghave doesn't cast a lot of spells (opting instead for triggers and activated abilities to take the place of instants and sorceries where possible), Ghave can use that mana every turn, and unless you have a lot of instants and permanents with flash (and while you're in colors 2 and 3 for flash, you're also not in colors 1 and 2 for instants), you don't get to untap every turn. My Ghave actually runs Rule of Law to add storm and cascade to his very long list of Things You Can't Do. (Though I will say, storm will love this card.)
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Is it just me, or am I confused as to why no one has mentioned jeskai ascendancy with this? It seems a little worse I guess, but I still feel like it may be more consistent. I haven't played the deck, but it seems like it could be just as good with things like blue suns zenith and such.
I'm pretty okay with this card being outrageous. For a legendary mythic, this card has immense power when finely tuned to harness its potential. That is how cards --should-- be designed.
This card offers a lot; and that's what's exciting. I'm glad standard has cards like this because it means that WotC is still a fan of making cards that appeal to the Timmy/Johnny players and not just new standard "good cards" that will be used up by spikes.
I can't wait to brew with this thing. Now I just have to hope that this and the portal are cheap enough to grab a couple of each without breaking my wallet...
Take Maelstrom Wanderer for example. If you have Crystal Shard, Gilded Lotus, and Paradox Engine and tap out to cast Maelstrom Wanderer, you get 3 cast triggers, float 9 mana, which is enough to recast Wanderer and repeat the process as many times as desired. I gave this as an example but in reality it would just be infinite mana on the spot, with all the dorks and rocks I play.

I love the flavor text. It's like the judges at the fair are having the same WTF moment most of us are cause they know its busted too. But my question is if they knew it was busted then why would the print such an absurd card?

Not sure what to splash. I'm thinking a R/G list for better removal.

I think that we're all missing the commander that REALLY benefits most from Paradox Engine.

But on the other hand There's Ben cards just as psycho as this and yet not banned.
In Modern, there's elfball and Grand Architect. Standard has Cryptolith Rite.
The first thing I thought of was Cloudstone Curio. Alternately, Aluren and one of the cheap gating creatures from Planeshift. Seeing as my Animar already uses Curio and Priest of Urabrask (and Cloud of Faeries and Palinchron) as an infinite mana combo...
