Need to turn your attitude around then. Be happy for them and happy when you open yours sometime.
Uh, I never said I wasn't happy for them? I was happy when the guy to my left pulled a Canopy Vista, I was happy when the guy to my right pulled a Cinder Glade, I was happy when the guy across from me pulled a Kor Haven, I was happy when the guy two seats to my left pulled a Wooded Foothills, I was happy when the girl in the pod next to mine pulled a Bloodstained Mire, and I was happy after the guy who beat me in the finals pulled a Verdant Catacombs.
Contrary to popular belief, you can be happy for people who pull expeditions while also feeling bad because those expeditions keep dancing around you.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
So, stupid question...
... I assume the new Intro Planeswalker Decks still have booster packs in the back of them (like the old intro decks did).
Can you still pull an Invention out of those boosters?
Or out of the Fat Pack boosters?
I can honestly say that I would be happy with opening any of them with two exceptions: Aether Vial and Painter's Servant. It is not that I don't think they are good cards, but I would never use the former, and the latter is banned in the format I prefer to play. With everything else, I'd be just peachy as they are all usable by me.
Well, if you happen to pull one of those I can promise you that there will be people wishing to trade for them, or buy them off you. So it wouldn't be a total loss.
Indeed, heck, I might even be able to get a revised era dual or two for one of them if I'm lucky.
On one hand, Crucible is nice here - but on the other hand now I am worried we aren't going to see it reprinted normally anytime soon...
MaRo has confirmed that inclusion in "Masterpieces" will not preclude cards from seeing reprint in normal ways. That means, that that the possibility of Crucible of Worlds to show up in MM17 has not been reduced because of its inclusion in Kaladesh Inventions.
You'd be lucky get a dual, let alone 2 (except maybe what..Taiga?) for one of those.
Depends on who or where I would potentially trade them away. I have found that the Zendikar Expeditions are valued higher in local markets compared to globally because most people who get them aren't interested in selling them, which in turn leads to higher prices.
Correction: You'll need to buy four boxes on average before you're likely to have pulled one. You'll need to buy 1 + the total number of boxes without inventions in order to be mathematically sure to get one.
This comment was brought to you by math. Learn it. Live it. Love it.
Nooooo, math is my only real weakness! We will meet again and this time I won't be beaten by math again.
Jeez, it's like every month, we get a new eternal card (in my case, for Commander and Legacy), which will now have a foil version. (Just recently, Burgeoning, and a little way back, Pyroblast, Toxic Deluge, Force of Will, etc...)
What headache for foil collectors everywhere. I avoided the expeditions and stuck with first-prints because of the inferior print quality, but now you have to take into account the first-time foil prints and the oh-so-beautiful border and artwork.
They know where to hit us where it hurts
For now I'm aiming to snag a Masterpiece Mana Vault.
But damn, the rest of them are just so wonderfully crafted...

Expeditions can be opened in any booster. I saw a friend pull TWO expeditions in a prerelease kit, and another friend to pull a Overgrown Tomb from a Fat Pack. So yes, I think you can.

I don't see why not, you could get Expeditions from Fat/Intro deck packs, so unless something changed, a booster is a booster.
Also about the commentary of all the Aether Revolt Inventions being Sw or afterwards alphabetically, couldn't WotC just be sorting the first batch in alphabetical order and will put the second batch out in alphabetical order too? Why does it have to be a continuation between sets? I doubt it would have gone that far into the letters if it was one continuous alphabetical order. There just does not seem to be enough candidates in the late alphabet to fill in the rest of the set. Trying to figure it out: 2 more swords, Wurmcoil, Winter Orb, Zuran Orb, Voltec Key, Tormad's Crypt, Tidehollow Strix, Thran Dynamo, Thorn of Amethyst?
Also, most damning evidence against this: Sword of Body/Mind is alphabetically first in the sword cycle and is not here. As a bonus, in order of print, Sword of Feast/Famine should be after F/I and L/S.
a) They're all very pretty
b) Where a flavor text appears, it's really good and strengthens the feel of the plane
c) Some serious stuff has been put there
d) They will probably sell packs like crazy indeed
I'm okay with the concept of epic rarity. I admire the brilliance of the marketing team for bringing these things out on basic land day. I like the cards that they chose to reprint. I absolutely love the new art and fancy border. I am salivating over the flavor text. By all accounts, I should love this.
One thing really bugs me, though.
While I love the new art, I hate that new art was used. If these cards had normal art (albeit holographic and a new set symbol), they would effectively increase the supply of cards on the market (even if it isn't by much). Now that they are all visual marvels, however, people who already own these cards (especially those with large wallets) have a good reason to invest in one of these as well. While I get that the new art brings things into the thematic space of Kaladesh, I wish that they weren't designed to attract the sort of big-money investors who are more likely to have these cards already.
tldr: If collectors/investors ever start treating inventions as separate cards from the originals, worthy of buying even if you have the original, I don't see this having any real effect on the market.
The effect of the market is that those collectors buy up a lot of stuff which requires a LOT of booster opening, which in turn pushes down the prices of normal cards from the sets. So the real effect will be seen on cards from Kaladesh itself.
Not only that but because Inventions are mostly pimp/highly collectible cards people who have original versions will be selling those old versions. This may not decrease the price significantly but will increase the availability. Even now I have noticed more Cloudstone Curios and Steel Overseers offered for sale. I hope this will happen to all of the reprints.
As for the selection of Inventions I have some doubts if gearhulks will be impactful enough to not generate bad feelings if someone pulls one out insteas of something more notable.
Visuals:
I have trouble verifying that from the picture but is the foiling process the same as in FtV or is it normal?
I really dont like the border. I don't like the one on Expeditions as well. Why don't they make those special cards full art is beyond me.
While they're beautiful, I can't help but think of the impact these announcement would do for FTV products. They're recently underwhelming and watered down by alot. Personally I think the appeal for them wouldn't be as high going forward. Which may make for better news coz they could be cheaper.
Holy ***** this is so great in so many levels. As a Stoneblade and Affinity player, and Artifact fan and Steampunk lover in general this set will genocide my wallet. I need those swords and a playset of Opal and Overseer x_x.
On a minor note, what are your bets for AER inventions?
Good list. One thing I noticed is that there are no keyword mechanics from outside Kaladesh featured in the Masterpieces so far (only ability words) - and I don't know whether Batterskull's Germ token would have made it past the flavor police anyway, but that's also a possible point against Arcbound Ravager.

as someone else stated if the non KLD/AER cards are in alphabetical order and AER will get only cards named sw-z I found theese as potential candidate (I have a few doubts on the colored ones)
theese are 21 card and leave a 3 spot for a partial cycle from AER or a full cycle if the 2 colored artifact are not considered

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again"
The Expeditions in OGW were resetted alphabetically so only cards after sw- is probably out of question. Not to mention Sword of Body and Mind would already be out.
The Masterpieces in KLD are all artful. They can arguably be seen as ways to improve and advance civilisation, or they're just nice pieces of art (Like the swords)
Am I the only one who looks at these things and sees 30 cards I will never have? And therefore, I have very little incentive to open more packs than usual?
Or are people really thinking about how they want to pre-order a box now because it has a 1/3 chance of 1/30 inventions?

Or are people really thinking about how they want to pre-order a box now because it has a 1/3 chance of 1/30 inventions?
I think your perspective is off just a bit. I don't see 30 cards I will never have. I see 30 cards that I had zero chance of having and now have a non-zero chance of having.
But I agree that I will never buy more packs just to crack one of these. I'm going to buy what I always buy. If I get one, great. If I don't, so be it.
After some thought about these cards I have been able to conclude some things.
1. Masterpiece seems like an odd name, sure it makes sense at the moment because of the inventions, but when it comes to non artifact cards it will be a bit out of place. A fine name though, at least it is better than just calling it something like "Secret Mythic" or some such nonsense.
1a. As for this being a new rarity I am not all that bummed out by it. Out of the current popular TCGs Yugioh has 20+ rarities of varying degree, Pokemon has 6, Vanguard has 5, Force of Will has 7, Buddyfight has 8, Weiss Schwarz has 11, and Luck and Logic (another one of those anime card games that recently just popped up) seems to have at least 7 (I can't find much info on it right now). So Magic having a 5th rarity doesn't sound so bad, compared to those other card games, especially when this isn't going to hurt anything in the long run.
2. This feels much better than when Battle for Zendikar did it, the only reason being that BFZ was pretty ***** for a set, not to mention the introduction to a whole new block structure. Its own Masterpieces were the only thing to really be excited for, after Ulamog and Gideon, when almost the entire set was complete *****, in many ways. The Expeditions felt like the only way to get any value, but to actually feel like something good was coming out of a booster, this was especially the case as all of our hopes were higher as we all hoped it would have the same quality as its predecessor. Kaladesh on the other hand has a lot more going for it, a lot more interesting cards, more value, and isn't trying to shove down a particular cosmic enemy down our throats.
2a. As long as the rest of the cards are decent it won't feel like as much of a lottery as it did with BFZ. Sure you're still going to open up a dud pack, but it doesn't look like that will be happening to Kaladesh as much as BFZ.
I certainly hated Expeditions, mostly because at the time reprints were even smaller than they are now, which is still mighty small at the moment, but with these happening so often and since it doesn't feel like it is a cash grab so much as it did previously then I figure I can get used to this. I'm sure as time goes on I'll probably only be able to get one per block, if that, out of boosters, but I can't argue how awesome it will feel later on to crack open something like Mana Vault, or something else equally cool.
With that I will say that these are looking much better than they did previously and that I like them more now than I did with BFZ, but I still remain cautious as I do hope that this won't mean we lose some of these cards as potential reprints down the road just because they were a promo in some set. I also do hope that in a few years that we can get some of these arts in a normal printing as they are some of the best I've seen in quite a while for many, my only criticism is that it is a bit hard to tell where the hilt is on Sword of Fire and Ice and Solemn Simulacrum has a pot belly.
