In fact, we haven't heard from Dovin Baan in any way since he was first revealed... no flavor text or art or anything, right?
Really been waiting to see what they do with him. He's a big mystery when it comes to theme, and I'm hoping he's someone I'll really like and have reason to use. He seems like a solid White/Blue character, but could be something different.
Doesn't help the last couple of days have been kind of unexciting for me too.
My bet is he is esper. Blue for sure and the consulate seem solid white/ black. Peace and civilization( white) thru oppression (black). The new legend supports that too.
I think we are seeing a super cycle too. A wedge Planeswalker in each block. Bant last time. Esper this time. Etc etc
Why? If anything I would imagine every other block since Tarkir, given we didn't get one in Zendikar and are almost assuredly getting one in Amonkhet (Bolas). Every other block is at least something of a pattern, though I kind of question how intentional it is.
And I don't think Dovin will be Esper personally, but I could see that happening.
My guess on the pattern is based on MaRo response to why Tamiya was bant and not white blue. He mentioned it needed to be done for color reasons so they jammed her in bant. But not alot of additional info. Makes me think that consideration might be part of a cycle. Mskes done sense too. The five gateway characters represent their Colors and the guess star ones the multi color pie. That's the reason I think we are seeing a cycle start.
As for why I think he's esper...he's creative and orderly (blue). About security and the heights of civilization( white) and the consuls are the villains. The whole peace and prosperity vibe is a thin veneer to set up the drama of aether revolt. They are oppressive and tyrannical(black) all in the name of order and security. All if that screams esper to me
I'm tired of vehicles already. I don't want to be tapping creatures for dumb vanilla creatures.
I guess you did not even read the card.
I did read the card, I just think it's mediocre. Incidental looting is *okay* but when you have to start tapping your creatures to use your other creatures it's a waste.
What? How is it a waste if you use the creatures you drop each turn and have summoning sickness to crew a vehicle?
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.

Standard is set up so that it's supposed to have approximately ten Planeswalkers in it. They already had five Planeswalkers planned for Innistrad, but they also knew that people were wanting Tamiyo to return. So, Development said that Tamiyo could be in so long as she was tricolored, because that didn't affect the color balance of the playable Planeswalkers in Standard, because it was much more niche.
And the Consulate might (might being important) be Esper, but that doesn't mean Dovin has to be.

So wordy.
Oh Rider, my heart will go on...
