This is real friggin neat-o. I really love that wizards is trying hard to make energy non-parasitic. That is, most energy makers have a way of using it on the same card. This makes the energy deck seem realllly worth.

DECKS:
Commander:
Aurelia the Warleader - Combat Tricks and Swarm
Oloro, Ageless Ascetic - Lifegain/Lifedrain Pillowfort
Trostani, Selesnya's Voice - Token Assault
Meren of Clan Nel Toth - Reanimator Value
Mizzix - Out of the Box Spellslinger
Well, I found the card designed specifically for me in this set. It's not a Storm card, since it has to tap, but it does still reward casting loads of instants and sorceries, so it's right up my alley.
Edit: Also, is that flavortext a pun on potential energy? Because if so, then this card is even more up my alley.
Shrine of Burning Rage, this is not even close. And this is one slow, slow card even by comparison, you need to start churning through your deck fast to get value. Now I'd like to believe theres some kind of standard eggs deck powered by ghirapur orrery, but the permanents needed for paradoxical outcome and instants/sorceries for this don't work well together.
For comparison to the all-star that was shrine of burning rage and its "Oh, you've got Protection from Red?" or "Pay 3, game over", on its own this generates 1.2 damage per spell cast, standard burn spells are so sad we can't even get lightning bolt, and then it unloads the damage pretty slowly even if you've got a ton of energy saved up. Shrine could be laid turn 2, popped turn 6 after 6 spells were cast and deal 10 damage. This could be laid turn 3, doesn't work with your aggro curve, only burn, then after casting 3 instant/sorceries you tap it once for 3 damage
Also, a cute interaction: this can turn Harnessed Lightning into Lightning Strike (get 2 from the trigger, 3 from the spell that you spend on the Tower instead of the spell).

"The true measure of all heroes is not what they achieve, but who they inspire." —Triumph of Gerrard
I'm speculating here, but from the flavor text, it seems Tezzeret is getting the inventors to harness aether energy from the plane without the Consulate's permission, so Bolas can restore himself to full power. If I remember correctly, Bolas tried to harness the energy of the conflux on Alara, but Ajani fought him off. It looks like Bolas is still looking for energon cubes.

On the other hand, shrine of burning rage is a pretty dead draw late game where this could be used immediately if you already have leftover energy. Whether an energy deck will typically have a lot of "leftover energy" remains to be seen.
On the OTHER other hand, what if you just mostly ignored the tap ability, and kept this as a card that gives you 2 energy every time you cast a (instant/sorcery) spell. There could be a spells deck that just wants this for that, if there are enough other energy payoff cards. It certainly seems possible, though maybe not tier 1.

That's exactly how I was looking at it as well. It seems like it could be a "centerpiece" of some sort of combo deck, or it can build up counters for pay off in some control type build, or, it can go the aggressive route and probably turn the counter generated by creatures with poor activation effects into profit late game while also profiting off the few instants/Sorceries you cast. It's versatile(should have said that first and saved the ramble).

Well, it speaks volumes as to whether energy will be parasitic or not when so many cards get evaluated with the end analysis of "This isn't good enough on its own but might work in an energy deck". I think maro has been really disingenuous as to how insular the mechanic is if the cards have to be balanced around energy tribal and aren't strong enough to work in a vacuum. On its own, this is even more of a dead draw lategame than shrine of burning rage, but yes it could be a better topdeck in an energy deck, and unleash more more throughout the game if built around. But that concerns me as to the wider nature of this set.
What are the spoiled energy cards that represent a real payoff? So far I haven't noticed anything that looks like it works out of an all in energy deck.
There's gotta be a fun (meaning tier 2) deck with 4 of these (multiples will generate up to 8 energy per spell cast). I'm thinking of using it as some sort of generator in a mono u brains style deck with the payoff being Aetherworks Marvel to drop a bomb (such as rise from the tides) and punch in for the win. You should get enough zombies that even if they get wrathed, they provide energy allowing you to reuse the Marvel again. Although, with that amount of energy, you can just keep tapping for 3 damage.
Very Xmas land idea, but I'm tired...so.

Dynavolt Tower
3
Artifact
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, get EE (two energy counters).
T, Pay EEEEE: Dynavolt Tower deals 3 damage to target creature or player.

dont think modern wants this at 3 mana....
top 5 anime of all time (tv, not books because dragon ball would be first)
1. Sword art online 2. Fairy tail 3. Naruto(shipuden) 4. Bleach 5. Claymore
Edit: and it's spelled Dynavolt in the title and Dinavolt in the text.
What is this nonsense?
Edit 2: ignore me; after looking at the Italian original I get it now, including the name deviance. Oops.
