LOVE IT!!!! Egyptian Mythology is super flavorful with LOTS of design space. Lots of stuff with the GY. I wonder if they will bring back the 'god' card type but instead of an enchantment, be somethimg else. Super excited!!!!! Also begs the question....mummies...are they the card type zombie or mummy?
These five gods who tries to win Nicol Bolas' favor... they MAY be planeswalkers in disguise? Powerful planeswalkers are frequently considered gods by locals. Or, they are indestructible gods like Theros.
Why did NB pick this his world, I wonder? Alara was there for the mana, as here...? Unless of course this is just one of many worlds he rule.
I didn't think much of Vengeful Pharaoh at first, but looking at the art... It is a perfect fit here... It has the Bolas horns and everything!
Nice find! Do you think they planned it this far ahead?
On the other hand, they also wrote a whole story about the (then random) Eye of Ugin on Ghostfire.
We best have a Desert reprint in this block or so help me.
Also, "Hour of Devastation" is not a great name for a set imo
Bear in mind there is the "Book of Hours" in ancient Egypt. Horus, has 12 disciples, basically the 12 hours of the day/night. Separating the afterword from the light of day/life. I think it's an homage of sorts to this. Also, we have the tests of the gods which suggests a sort of "hour of judgement". See the "Weighing of the heart" picture attached. Where if your heart is more heavy than the "feather of truth" of Ma'at, it would get gobbled up by the alligator/demon called Ammit.
Simply ruling it would be too boring, so let's look at something else.
Step 1 Establish yourself as a god on a plane
Step 2 build an religious system revolving around you and maybe some other beings (naturally they need to be under you) so lesser deities
Step 3 Build into that system a path to an afterlife, eternal life or whatever
Step 4 Make the path challenging, so that when they face it, the beings with a spark may trigger said spark
Step 5 after the new planeswalkers traveled for their first time and come home, you present yourself before them as their god and explain that their new gift is a blessing from you
Step 6 Recruit them into your network as loyal underlings serving their "god"
Step 7 Profit
2. The Gatewatch will most likely be involved through Belzenok or how the Egyptian demon was called, so Liliana is probably in the set.
Bolas doesn't need a plan. He is an Elder Dragon with a strong streak of Megalomania. He ruled Medaka for centuries until an upstart threw a falling star at his head. He enjoys to rule over countries, worlds, planes. If Bolas could become powerful enough to rule the entire multiverse with an iron fist, he'd be as happy as a pig in a mud puddle.

Even if the time is off, this show that the "egypt set" leak wasn't not a wild guess. This mean Return to Return to Ravnica after that?
Not necessarily they were completely off on the names. Missed Bolas completely and the description doesn't fit what wizards has said about the set. Egypt has been in the short list for ages it's a reasonable guess. The only thing that lends credence to Ravnica 3 is the name dropping of Vraska, but even then, that's a year in advance.

There was an article on Vengeful P a while back (edit i.e. when it came out or near enough), basically saying that they were not doing an Egypt-themed set in the (then) near future, so the card did not have an obvious block home, but could slip in where it was and perhaps be used in future if needed. I cannot remember who wrote it- Maro perhaps?

I'm going to begin with the note that I'm still quite spurious on the rumor.
That said, we saw (what was probably) a change in a set's name pretty late not too long ago. (Warlords of Khanar to Khans of Tarkir)

This stuff is awesome and so. Yet I can't get even more hyped right now. Especially after such a great thing as CN2. I'd need a 4-color Urza Planeswalker commander for that. Please!
Unless I read wrong the article only says they hadn't done an Egyptian set yet. It even says they will eventually get there. The card was in M12 and they work with a six year plan so they had rough outlines of what they were doing all the way up to probably right now, with the change in set structure eating into ideas from then faster. So it's possible when commissioning art they had the thought of Egypt plane ruled by Bolas already.
I'm curious how the Gods will work here, since I doubt we'll get Devotion back so soon. I would love to see a "Devotion to [Card Type]" instead of a color something like "This God isn't a creature unless..."
W You have X Enchantments on the Battlefield.
U You have X Artifacts on the Battlefield.
B X creatures have died this turn.
G You have X Creatures on the Battlefield.
R You have cast X instant or sorceries this turn.
The proposed B and Red gods would have a disadvantage compared to the W, U and G based on counting permanents vs spells, abilities, and targeting requirements.
How about this then?
X creatures on the battlefield
X artifacts on the battlefield
X creatures in the graveyard
opponent's life total is less than X
a creature with power X or greater other than CARDNAME

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Kaladesh is going to have to be really good to keep me thinking about it as opposed to this block. Love Egypt. Worried about all the Bolas but maybe he won't take too much of the block.
Bolas and an Egyptian block. That's just too sweet. I wonder how they'll do the Gods when they've done mono and dual coloured ones in Theros block
Well there have always been cycles of gods/deities and they're all fairly different. I don't think they'll be running out of design-space for cycles of mythically powerful beings anytime soon. It would be neat if they were three-color though

I guess they won't be enchantment creatures this time. We don't know anything yet about the mechanics of the set, and artifacts are unlikely right after Kaladesh.
if Bolas is the ruler of this plane, it's not unreasonable to think he is one of the "gods". and if so, then logic would dictate the others aren't actual gods, but anti gatewatch planeswalkers like someone already stated. I don't honestly think this is the case, because it would upset a lot of people wanting actual gods, but frankly it doesn't make sense in any other fashion yet. We will have to see more to really speculate better
Wow, this is the best news from WOTC in some time. An artifacts-matter block (my favorite type) followed by an Ancient Egypt block (awesome, awesome flavor, incredible source of art), that's just great!
