The most logical replacements for Regeneration at this point are damage prevention and return-from-graveyard effects, both of which red has also been known to handily subvert and both of which black subverts far less often. Damage removal can work too, but that will end up working exactly like Regeneration does now sans tapping and removing from combat, and it still doesn't capture the flavor black wants for necromantic regeneration.
Neither of which really fit on a troll. The point of the tapping and removing from combat is you still disable it enough for that turn to not fight - it has to recover before it can do anything. If a white spell destroys an attacking creature and you use your 'new' regeneration on it - it still deals damage. Likewise you should be able to 'kill it' before blockers are declared, have it regenerate but be unable to do anything that turn. You might as well just use Indestructible at that point (like Kytheon)
I can't think of a way to do the mechanic more thematically appropriately than the current Regeneration other than removing it from the battlefield (which also doesn't make sense for this flavour, but works mechanically)
As it is now, you can use it as a mana sink (I activate my Jungle Troll's regeneration 12 times, six times with green mana and six times with red, it now has 12 regeneration shields.)
Since there's no mana burn there's no point for mana sinks. Also, like many keywords, having multiple regeneration shields doesn't do anything functional. It still only triggers the 'next time'. They would all try to replace the same death and you choose the replacement effect and then they are all gone.
EDIT: OOH you know what would be perfect? "When this creature receives damage and has not taken lethal damage, remove that damage." Which would negate things like Double Strike. It has to take all the hits in one blow or it (thematically) regenerates past it. I suppose that wording has a timing work around that you can cast an instant on it after it triggered from the first hit - but that's fine.
They ******* lied to us. They put metalcraft on a card but didn't use the ability word.
Typical Maro wordplay, it's not a returning named mechanic since it's not a named mechanic this time around.
It's not wordplay, it was an obvious possibility from when he said it and in no way detracts from the point because we see repetition of effects all the time. Why do you people even care? Does it personally offend you in someway? Find something better to complain about at least.
Can be niche like Lambholt PacifistFerocious but look really uncreative and it shows little respect players say one thing and do the opposite the next day. (politicians seem ...)
Maro's statement remains entirely true. That you didn't understand what it meant is not necessarily his fault, that could well be down to you (and IMHO, it is), I'm afraid. And besides, this isn't some grand deception, all he did was say something and you were mislead. You didn't opt into anything and it's had and will continue to have very little effect on your life.
Invent X (Pay X mana as this spell resolves. Create X 1/1 artifact creature tokens)
Whenever this card invents, scry X, where X is the number of creatures created.
And they are liars there are in a way returning mechanics
The land said "at the begining of your upkeep if you control three or more artifacts you gain 1 life" LIARS THATS METALCRAFT!!!
it kinda like the cards that say whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, do effect. They are technically not Landfall, but they are still Landfall in our eyes. If it is just one or two cards in the whole set (like it was with Sporemound), then it is understandable why they write it out instead of putting Metalcraft on one or two cards. It's much like the two (or was it three) Spellshapers they printed in ENM without calling them Spellshapers.

And they are liars there are in a way returning mechanics
I think something may have been lost in translation to your language.
MaRo said "none of the named mechanics in Kaladesh" are returning. Metalcraft is not a named mechanic in Kaladesh. Was he misleading? Sort of but he was absolutely truthful.

Now that makes sense

I wasn't complaining at all, I'm saying that he didn't ***** lie to us, like the post I was replying to claimed. Maro often doesn't tell us the whole truth when he says things like "no returning named mechanics".
So basically we agree about the people who are overreacting. I just don't happen to be one of them.

Did you complain that Thraben Standard Bearer did not have the creature type Spellshaper?
Did you complain that Tireless Tracker did not have Landfall? What about Zendikar's Roil?
Did you complain when Woodland Wanderer, Tajuru Stalwart, or Skyrider Elf did not have Sunburst, despite being the Converge cards that absolutely match up to the Sunburst mechanic?
When it shows up on a very small amount of cards, it is not a mechanic of the set. You even said it yourself: "In a way..."
That's not a mechanic then. That's a cards individual text.
