Cycling would have been nice,
but overall I'm enticed by this announcement.
They obviously want Kaladesh to feel really fresh.
On another note, I'm not sure colored artifacts counts as a "mechanic".
It was Esper's gimmick, but that was always a cop out.
The post even specifies named mechanics.

When we've seen any standard block without returning mechanics last time?
SOI - Madness
BFZ - Landfall
Tarkir - Morph
Theros - Scry
RTR - Hybrid mana
Innistrad - Flashback
Scars - Imprint
Zendikar - Kicker
Alara - Cycling
Lorwyn - Hybrid mana
Time Spiral - Madness, Echo, Morph, Storm, Buyback, etc
So... First Ravnica IIRC?
Agreed, colored artifacts are fair game, I think we will see some in the set.
Overall, I am happy about this.
Or colored activated abilities. Though I wonder if we will see colored artifact creatures, since the flavor for those kind of creatures are creature who are a mix of flesh and metal, while Kaladesh artifact creatures that we have seen are all built and seemingly 100% metal.

The quote is no named mechanics, so RTR and Lorwyn wouldn't count. Alara is the start of the "one returning mechanic per block" trend, and I think RTR's is usually considered to be split cards rather than hybrid, since hybrid is a deciduous mechanic.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
This is another case where you have to pay attention to what Maro's saying. He specifically said we haven't seen any of the named mechanics before. (Granted, he could have worded it just a bit better to clarify we haven't seen the block-specific named mechanics before, otherwise somebody's going to apply "named mechanics" to evergreens like Flying and such.) We might still see one-off callbacks to past mechanics like what Courser of Kruphix and Sporemound did for Landfall. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one nod to Metalcraft, though I doubt they'll have even one Affinity card as even now that would set off alarm bells.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

We see affinity all the time, including on emrakul, the best post mirrodin 1 affinity card. We've had affinity for all kinds of things.
to be fair, "scry" returning as the lone return mechanic in Theros might as well be "no returning mechanics."
and hybrid mana being the only one in Return to Ravnica barely counts considering OG Ravnica introduced it to the game...
Theros also had devotion (i.e. Chroma), so that could count as well.
No it doesn't. Devotion is NOT chroma. It's like saying that any "additional cost mechaninc" (escalate, strive...) is a returning mechanic because of Kicker.

Sometimes Chroma works exactly like Devotion (Primalcrux, Heartlash Cinder), sometimes not. Sometimes different mechanics can work similar or exactly the same on some cards (Kicker and Overload, Multikicker and Replicate, Entwine and Escalate), but can also work different on other cards.

So no affinity, no contraptions (we already know it), no colored artifacts (counts as mechanic?), no spellshapers (also counts as mechanic?) no return to melding theme right now.
Your thoughts.

But I'm patient for that mechanic to kick in.

Contraption? Yes. But "assemble"?
No, because Scry become evergreen in 2015. In 2013, it wasn't.
Trying to think of a good example off the top of my head.
Firebreathing/Shade mechanc?
Perfect (and obvious which makes me feel dumb for missing it) example.
The etymologists in this thread can argue "it's not exactly the same!!", but the point is: did a mechanic return?
Metalcraft fixed Affinity, Delirium fixed Treshold and Hexproof fixed Shroud.
Chroma is waaay closer to Devotion than all of those three.
Firebreathing and "shade" mechanic are in pretty much every set (but unnamed). Note how unblockable has become unnamed (can't be blocked).
