Notably, one of the few ways to become the monarch at instant speed. Important for cards that reward you for being the monarch at the beginning of your upkeep.
I feel like this should have been uncommon, but eh this is a decent card, especially for the cards that care about you being the monarch at your upkeep.
I know they had to call the mechanic something, but it's kind of goofy how easily anyone can become the Monarch in-game. Kind of a flavor flaw.
Anyone on Paliano can become Monarch. Marchesa (the current Queen) wasn't anywhere close to being Brago's successor, she basically bought the throne. Brago himself was a long was from succession but is implied to have killed everyone inbetween.

Haha I know, I just think it's a little humorous how that's reflected in the game. In the story, you'd still need the power and connections that someone like a Brago and Marchesa have. In the game, you lose/gain Monarch with the greatest ease. I just feel it might've served better to have cards that make you the monarch a little less available, as you can already just attack whoever is the Monarch. *drops Marchesa, actual monarch onto the battlefield and draws a card at the end* .... *immediately loses monarch to player 3's common bird etb*. But I suppose it's a chaotic concept to begin with, just a bit of a flavor disconnect for me personally.
I think the sac clause is a bit too much. 5 mana to activate seems pretty fair without the sac clause. How easy it is to become the monarch is pretty silly. But then again if you can kill a spirit... anything goes lol.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

It probably has that sac clause because otherwise it'd basically just be 5 mana to draw a card. And that would be rather nice on a land

Ah, I missed the "easily" part. Yeah that's a bit silly.
One thing about monarchy that bothers me most: we had a plenty of discussion about "how cardname helps you to keep the monarchy", but who actually cares about stealing the monarchy with attack if you can just drop another of many "makes you a monarch" creatures?
Sacrificing seems a bit excessive for a Rare.
It could probably cost 5 without the sac and that would be better.
I disagree. This card will probably still see play in every mono-R and mono-W Commander deck in the history of ever, no point in requesting a good card to be better. The Temples showed us that lands that give you card fixing is great. Lands that give you card draw? DAMN.
Yes, I know, there's a drawback in that it makes you a target, but making it repeatable would basically makes this drawback nil, which I think is unnecessary. I think it's a great card as it is. Narrow, not meant for every deck, but great nonetheless.

Actually it makes much more sence to make it easy.
If you have the power to just walk in the throne room with force and sit on the throne, you are the effective ruler.
Being the monarch doesnt mean others accept that, you just got the position, thats all.
Anyone is free to just stab you in the back and replace you , Survival of the Fittest that is.

In real life its more like military putsch , you CAN just throw over the current goverment, its not crazy difficult.
Staying in charge however is more difficult, as you have to withstand the counter attacks.
So in that regard, the monarch mechanic as it is represented in the game is much more realistic to the world than a more complicated way would be.

Other than the bomb rares/mythics, most of the common/uncommon monarch cards range from slightly below curve to very below curve, and many of them get much worse if you already are the monarch or stop being the monarch. A check of the current "you become the monarch" cards reveals that every single one costs 4 or more mana to use. Unless you want to make your deck extremely top-heavy, you'll probably only include a handful of monarch effects, which means you'll rely on attacking most of the time. Also, there's the whole thing about painting a target on your head.
I love this card the way it is, but I feel like it could have felt more political. Something like pay "6, tap it, each opponent may draw a card: you become the monarch."
Y'know, grease some palms, bribe your way to the throne.
Either way it's going in all my edh decks forever.
I like the card, but the sacrifice ability is poor. I too would have prefered a far simpler payment, such as 5: You become the Monarch. It would have been an auto-include in every MonoRed/White and Boros EDH I have, because those colours need some serious love when it comes to card draw.
Oh Wizard's, you were so close. So, so close.

Agreed. I preferred dethrone for that reason: it's always easier to take shots at the person at the top than to take their place.
