I actually like that it doesn't hit players; with this particular card i don't think it's a case of "playing it safe" as much as it's a design decision.
Yes, it makes it worse when you're aggressively beating down with flyers. But if it hit players it would be way worse when you're behind, and makes it a lot harder to "ultimate" as you'll often kill yourself/the other player. And let's be real, wiping the world and leaving yourself with godzilla is the dream with this card.
So I don't think this was a developmental "tone it down" decision, I think it'll play better this way.
Wow. This might be one of my favorite cards ever printed. Too bad it's in a set I will never be able to play outside of the kitchen table or at the draft itself. This card would be outstanding in modern, and absolutely devastating in standard. But we do have Nahiri's Wrath, which can almost do the same type of thing, just far less efficient, and of course, no Godzilla possibilities. Love this card

I wish we got more cards that add more effects as you pay more for X.
Agreed, that would be a very interesting use of design space as well. Hmm...
Well, there's Martial Coup and Banefire,
but they could definitely do more with that design space.
I was actually thinking about those when I wrote my post. Very strange that they never approached that design until now. I guess they don't want feelsbadmans when the X threshold for third tier is pretty damn unattainable(at least in limited).

My favorite flavor text: Time of Heroes

Card is a flavor homerun. Probably means this is our only 1CMC red mythic (sorry GG) though.
Well, it's the players' own damn fault with Goblin Guide. They *****ed when it "wasted" a rare slot in an event deck. They *****ed when it "wasted" the Grand Prix promo. It was under $5 when they were printing it all the time. Now, it's expensive and people ***** about it not getting a reprint. It's honestly hard to have any sympathy for a lot of the price whiners because they whine when cards are cheap and get a reprint and then whine when good cards go up in price and don't get reprinted. Wizards can't make it so each person simultaneously has all the good cards and can then sell them for high prices. Either everyone has it or it's expensive. It's about as eye rolling as all the *****ing about the expidition lands. Wizards was the devil for including an extra bonus cherry on top of a few of the sundaes they sold just like when they did the Helvault. They didn't have to give out any bonus ***** at all but everyone got free stuff and a few people got even sweeter free stuff. Sure, some of the stuff was better than others, but they didn't charge anyone extra for any of it or the free heros, the dragon game, or any of that. That's how we lost prerelease mythics and cool extras because people had to be unreasonable. I wish people would treat Wizards fairly because as far as I can tell, they do their best at the impossible goal of pleasing all the people all the time.
For those who were wishing that the card also hit players ala Earthquake, there is a very good reason for that that I can see.
Considering the incentives for this card make it a late game play, it's very likely that all players in your game that are still alive in your pod have life totals in the single digits. Nothing screams unfun and elicits more groans from the rest the table than that guy who decides to Earthquake everyone for enough to force a four-way draw. It's designed to be a finisher, just in creature form and not direct damage.
The question was more whether a Godzilla-ish being would show up on Fiora... although monstrous otherworldly villians hiding underground for eons and then emerging dramatically might get kind of old, wizards.
What an absolutely fantastic card. The last few core sets were starting to feel like this, where the flavor felt like it was in unexplored territory, but still decidedly in "Magic: The Gathering" territory, like a long lost region just discovered (a "lost world" if you will ) but I was worried we wouldn't get those cards anymore without the core sets.
Hell, if they keep this up and we buy enough, maybe we'll get Conspiracy sets with reprints like this on a regular basis.
I look forward to a blue one at a later date that bounces creatures with toughness x or less, makes everyone put their hand on the bottom and redraw that many cards, and makes a 7/7 Kraken with islandwalk. Oddly specific and therefore horribly unlikely? Yeah. Awesome? Yeah.
Mostly, definitely hoping that this is a cycle they'll fill out over time.

Makes you really want to go super huge on X.
Could see something like this in every color.

Definitely. It's a different way to do 'modal' spells.

Stop breaking the Internet.
You do the effects in order. It checks that you paid X = 8 then you do 8 damage to everything, destroy all artifacts then get Godzilla.
I love this card so much.
very simple
it enters after the damages

If you consider every Godzilla movie ever made to be an actual storyline event? Sure!
It's a shame it doesn't hit fliers (though I get why it doesn't, for flavour reasons)... would've hit Swans of Bryn Argoll in the multiplayer Soulfire Grand Master / Blasphemous Act deck archetype...
