SimicNuggets: From a color pie perspective, red is not allowed to get the ability 'destroy target creature'.
What may have happened is that this is part of MaRo's increased oversight on supplemental products and their color pie issues. (IOW, Daretti was originally 1RR and he forced them to either change the ability or make him 1BR.)
I don't see how black fits into Daretti or Leovold, so it must be flavor. Shame though, could've so used a blue green commander like this.
I can see the black in Daretti as a result of his current alliance with Grenzo. Though from the story, it is somewhat reluctant. Also, the vengeance thing. That is, I admit, usually pure red, but they had to differentiate him from the Scrap Savant. But in the end, he flung the old academic from the window and killed him. That is black, IMO.
As for Leovold, the thing is that we knew only Edric. The Trestians can be BUG by definition - spies, but also extortionists and maybe assassins.
That said, I absolutely adore Leovold's style of a highly urbanized, noble, opulent, but potentially wicked elf politician.
You're true. Leovold is the elf Laquatus I never knew I wanted.

I see I'm not the only one!
I'm pretty sure Leovold is the first M:tG art I've ever seen
where my first thought was "damn, I wish *I* had an office like that!"

So, Horn of Greed is getting reprinted. That's another one for the Leovold decks.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Leovold seems more flavor than anything else.
