Ah, the long-awaited mechanic that finally finds its home. Another marketing buildup from Maro that will probably result in some annoyining WOW-factor mechanic that's gonna actually be a new-washed old mecahnic.
I would suggest the Part A/Part B mechanic that we've discussed as an alternative to Contraptions, but I'm not sure if they would have thought to design a mechanic similar to Equip for the block that introduced Equip. Then again, the similarities might be the reason why Mechanic E was left out of Mirrodin block.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
People should remember that Magic the Gathering already has four other planes with the capable technology to fit Contraptions outside Kaladesh:
1. Fiora - Conspiracy already put Will of the Council into the game, so other off-beat mechanics are not off the table. And Fiora has shown technological promise, i.e Daretti, Scrap Savant
2. New Phyrexia - This would take Contraptions to an aesthetically dark place, but Phyrexians are all about machinery.
3. Dominaria - Tolarian Academy, and remember that Tolaria West continues the research.
4. Anywhere Wizards invents.

4. Anywhere Wizards invents.
Fiora is probably the only place for them, as Contraptions being built by New Phyrexia seems a bit silly for them, and something more you would find in Home Alone than a plane of horrors and abominations.
We're never going to Dominaria again, unfortunately, so we won't be seeing it there if we never head back.
Meld would have been a good way to do contraptions btw.
No It wouldn't be, the main challenge of contraptions is the wording on steamflogger boss, it says "If a Rigger you control would assemble a Contraption", if you notice, the rigger is the one assembling, not you.
Steamfolgger boss was never intended to work with anything, it was a joke, and making a functional design that works with that wording is very tricky.

In a world where errata is common,I doubt that's actually a problem. Not that it's not tricky, I just think they'll ignore it.
Except that MaRo has stated many times that the whole point to him solving contraptions would be to do it in a way that works with steamflogger boss. If they could just ignore it completely they could do whatever the hell they want and it wouldn't actually be a challenge.
bioboy66 asked: Will we ever see a "return to dominaria" expansion?
MaRo: I assume one day..
I didn't mean that in a negative way, like I hate Dominaria, but Wizards seems rather adamant about not going back there. Maro also could have just been saying something so people won't go "We won't go back, why?" We can barely trust them to print one specific card in a product practically made for it, then them say it is coming soon, and we haven't seen hide nor hair of it in two years.
The only way to trust what they say is by what they do. "One day" could mean next year or 10 years from now, so I'm not going to hope on it.
Designer 1: Ok, Kaladesh is going to be a set rooted in artifacts with more of a steam punk vibe. Any ideas for themes we should pursue?
Designer 2: The players seems to be intrigued by Steamflogger Boss. Maybe now is the time to explore Riggers, Contraptions, or both?
Designer 1: Oooh, you're right! This could be the set to finally explore that!
Rosewater: You're absolutely right; the players have clearly expressed a fascination and desire there. However, I had another theme in mind: it's called *****ting on everyone's dreams and not doing the thing the players want in the obvious place to do it. No Contraptions. No Riggers.
On Contraptions: MaRo Stated that, the challenge was to make contraptions work with steamflogger boss AS IT IS PRINTED, He also said he wouldn't limit himself to black border, and he's also stated that NO ONE in R&D is interested... let alone working on contraptions, Contraptions will be made when they find a mechanic that fits the bill and it will be put in a set when they find a place that fits the flavor and the mechanics. It not being in Kaladesh means only that either the mechanic hasn't been solved, or the place didn't fit the mechanic... or a host of other design-related reasons that might be unknown to us.
As for a return to Dominaria, it's been said that we'll probably go there eventually, but Dominaria has the "small" issue of having no real identity, it has too many things going on, and no real identity to it, that makes a return very tricky, so in order to go back to Dominaria, a significant number of stars have to align.
I don't even get why people are so attached to this nonexistent mechanic. I mean, is the nonstandard phrasing on the Steamflogger Boss really so appealing that its non-presence in a plane where players have convinced themselves it would fit (we don't even know if Kaladesh has goblins) is enough for it to be accused as an insult to fans? I have to stop commenting on these kinds of threads, for the sake of my sanity and blood pressure. People are obviously just trying to find reasons to get mad now.

Rosewater: MARKSTER ROSEWATER RUNS MAGICTOWN!
Yes, of course. Mark Rosewater clearly doesn't care enough about the players to force a mechanic originally intended to be a joke that he's one of the sole supporters in R&D of actually doing. Instead he's doing that terrible thing where he's using an idea for a mechanic he'd been holding onto for a long time and he thinks players will really like. Despicable.
Clearly the only appropriate response to this heinous act of not satisfying the expectations of a limited group of fans is riots. Get out ya pitchforks, guys!
Just wanted to comment that Steamflogger Boss text isn't thag weird nowadays. Creatures can devour and exploit each other, so riggers assembling contraptions doesn't sound that farfetched.
Oh no don't tell me a couple of the mutanted things (eldrazis) went to kaladash, so Brisela (mutated Bruna anf Gisela) went there?
(I heard that one escaped in the story but a rumor.)
"Fights with Innistrad" as his best set. He means that he's not sure if Innistrad or Kaladesh was the better set he designed, not that people from those planes fight between them. As for Brisela, I'm pretty sure that she 1. is dead and 2. can't planeswalk.
I just want one set that doesn't have elves/goblins/vampires/"uniquely not human but humanoid creature"
To ouhm, stay on topic...
Okay? What is a rigger, what is a contraption? Answer these before you tell me this is the best place for them. Not-Indian Steampunk World doesn't really look like the place for such, dirty ideas. Artifacts are celebrated here as much as life. According to the stories as I have read and images I have seen. A contraption seems more,, Conspiracy ish. A limited thing, and I would like a crack at making it work.
I'm honestly shocked that people still care about this stupid throwaway joke from a single decade old card. It's absolutely inexplicable, especially considering most of the players active today weren't even playing when Future Sight was released.
I'm not sure why how many players being around when it released matters, people are able to go back and look at things. That and they do care about enfranchised players.

Yes, people can go back and look at what was obviously a throwaway joke, and then continue to help build up massive expectations for what will inevitably be a disappointment after 10 years of hype and speculation on every single new set that comes out. Over a joke that was never intended to be realized.

To be fair, we did just get black bordered Big Furry Monsters...

That's a pretty bold statement, especially considering we just got "reintroduced" to it through Liliana's story in Origins, not to mention this: http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/93661909908/will-we-ever-see-a-return-to-dominaria
This speculation was almost as dumb as Marit Lage in SOI.
