On Blogatog Live at SDCC 2016, Mark Rosewater described Kaladesh as a set that he considered to be fighting with Innistrad as his best set ever, and that it would make you "feel like an inventor" when you played it, but in a later question he elaborated no contraptions in Kaladesh.
Sad that this is the only news worth mentioning from this year´s SDCC. I remember the fun, watching Twitter for the latest news about the upcoming sets. Instead, we got announcemnt day.
Maybe the rumored vehicles take the place of contraptions.....

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed at this as well. Hopefully there is something contraption like in Kaladesh. I'm only going to feel like an inventor if there are cool artifacts around that power me to victory. And maybe humans that help me weld those artifacts once they break...assuming there are no Goblins around.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
It seems like WotC still hasn't lost the habit of letting great opportunities pass them by. I've basically given up on most of the "future shifted" cards from Future Sight to be released in their originally designed sets. I think the only one to have gone through to a set was Nessian Courser, Bloodshot Trainee, Boldwyr Intimidator, Graven Cairns, and Mistmeadow Skulk (getting reprinted in a Masters set doesn't really count, although Mass of Ghouls was reprinted in Tenth Edition). Ghostfire could've been reprinted in the Tarkir block and I'm sure there are many others that could've already been printed outside of that horrid card frame that they used for them (even if it were to be printed in Duel Decks, Commander, Conspiracy, or any other reprint set).
Shah of Naar Isle has always given me hope of a "Return to Rabiah" set, the very first new plane from the very first expansion. Oh well, don't see that happening, either. Instead, we get Eldrazi in Innistrad.

Wow yeah way to go wizard, not putting something in a set that you never said you would. So dumb to not try to force in a mechanic that design/development have issues figuring out for years, that never was gonna be a real mechanic and was originally gonna be a joke. Yup it is all wizards faults people jumped the gun. Way. To. Go! /sarcasm.

i could have sworn Rosewater mentioned that they'd reprint Steamflogger Boss when they solved Contraptions, but now the only thing I see about that is a "What do you all think?" type of post.

Cards are game pieces, and should be treated as such, easily replaceable.
Cards are not money, investments, or a retirement fund, and should never have been treated as such.
Wizards made a mistake caving to speculators once, and we still pay for that mistake 2 decades later.
"Entitled:" the entire ad hominem fallacy condensed into a single word. It doesn't strengthen your argument to attack motivations, it just makes you look like you don't understand the argument.

A lot of the direct reprint ideas just weren't a very good idea. Triple green in Alara limited would be almost uncastable (nacatl war-pride). Ghostfire had plenty of spinoffs in Zendikar 2 but devoid is an eldrazi thing, not Ugin. Chroma ended up in Shadowmoor block, but faeries ended up UB, not green. Aura Swap isn't going to be all that fun on a bunch of cards. It totally ruins limited combat as an actual mechanic. Aven Mindcensor wrecks limited colorfixing hardcore which isn't exactly fun when a 2/1 flash, flier that would be a sweet pick anyway also seals the deal when you can't even cast your spells. Gravestorm is probably broken even more than regular storm. Haste isn't blue. Fortifications are dumb. An enchanted land is practically invincible at it is, unlike creatures. Death Rattle got obsoleted. Making the land always a creature leads to misplays with summoning sickness and would lead to serious drawbacks to balance. Edge of Autumn and Emblem of the warmind are just weird to be weird. Transfigure probably wouldn't be that much fun and takes up too much card space. It was probably just for cheating in Nephilim. Frenzy does little unless you're ahead and when you are, it just leads to winning more. Grave Scrabbler might be too powerful in a set with lots of madness. Gravedigger is a high pick and Grizzly Bear gravedigger with flash? Really? Grinning Ignus makes flickering red. Imperiosaur mechanic isn't even a drawback in limited. Lucent Liminid isn't exactly exciting. Logic Knot is probably worse than Cancel. Lumenthread Field just exists to be new. Absorb will probably never be a mechanic. Fateseal probably isn't coming since even fateseal 1 on a 4 mana walker led to hundreds of complaints. Petroglyphs should just be a token specific anthem effect. A functional Narcomoeba could have been in Innistrad. Patrician's Scorn has a Shadowmoor mechanic and a Ravnica flavor. Sarcomite Myr has an Alara mechanic and a Mirrodin type. Poisonous isn't how poison works now. Tombstalker isn't exactly an interesting rare.

At least we get Delve in Tarkir. But in BFZ and SOI we get nothing.
I guess, Wizards just ran out of ideas of "predicted" sets - they don't look to future THIS far.
From jacking up prices on what? Steamflogger boss? So now steamflogger boss is confirmed to be useless for over 10 years running and even if a copy cost a million dollars I wouldn't care because the card is 3R for a 3/3 that gives +1/+0 and haste to other copies of itself/hill giant with tiny upside/unplayable in all the formats unless you really, really want to try to make the card work by kicking rite of replication on it in EDH to swing for a whopping 48 damage when there are usually far better things to rite of replication with kicker on.
As for contraptions not being in, what a shocker.

Maro! Say it isn't so! People are saying at blogatog live you declared no contraptions on kaladesh! If we can't find how to do it in a steampunk world I don't know if I'll ever get to see them

There was something that was a perfect fit, a mechanic I’ve been trying to find a home for many years. Because of that, there wasn’t the right mechanical space to also fit in contraptions.
I promise I will one day find a home for contraptions. It just wasn’t in Kaladesh block.

So... this brings up two questions:
1. What mechanic(s) has Maro been talking about that got scratched from sets or were designed but never used in any of his articles?
and
2. Where else will contraptions exist, since MaRo says they will find a home? (This implies that it won't be very soon, as they still need to find that home.)

The thing I want to see from Kaladesh is mecha. It could just be equipment, with or without a subtype. But that fills a niche Magic hasn't really done yet, and could be done in a very fantastic way with thopter-ish suits.
