The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
I really like them a lot. I like how each piece of art plays on the character itself. As for the background, I'm fine with it. They're like, bleak and funny at the same time.

Can you name all of the creature types with at least 20 cards? Try my Sporcle Quiz! Last Updated: 6/29/20 (Core Set 2021).
The only good thing about these is that i get to save my money.
I bought the other 3 sdcc sets but won't waste my time or money with these. The blacked out ones are so much nicer.
I've gotta disagree with you pretty hard here. I thought they'd be pretty cool when they first announced these promos, but seeing them in person changed my mind. They were hard to read, and the art was ultimately unspectacular. To each their own though.

Disagree, the all black cards look succulent. They're not meant for slotting four-of and reading at a glance; they draw the eye and they look instantaneously distinct. These new ones look run-of-the-mill.... with less than impressive art.

It's a wonder that they never polled people on this before now. One hundred and thirty-five bent and peeling promo cards later...
Anyoneknow what time they drop at the hasbro booth, and also if they are limited supply or if one could jist drop by at any time and reliably pick these up?
Anyoneknow what time they drop at the hasbro booth, and also if they are limited supply or if one could jist drop by at any time and reliably pick these up?
I'm not attending this Comic-Con, but in the past ones I've attended the Hasbro booth has an allocation per day. One way to guarantee it is by waiting in line really early in the morning (like before 6 AM) and then being the first to get a ticket to the Hasbro booth. This ticket will have a time for you to come back and get your stuff. These go really fast and immediately after the doors open.
The second is not guaranteed, but how I've gotten it every year. Usually there is a line by one of the walls that is an "overflow" line where after they've dealt with all the ticket holders, they will let this line come through and buy stuff (usually in the early afternoon). I've been able to snag the cards every year this way, but you still have to wait (albeit not early in the morning). This is also assuming they will still have stock (which they did in the past).
The thing is, word is now out that these go for more than MSRP on eBay so basically everyone buys them even if they are not interested. This goes for all the limited edition toys too. This always irked me since every time I've just gone and bought the cards and that's it since I have no interest in buying something I'm just going to pawn off. Especially when I know others actually want it. If only that were the case here. I'm pretty sure a lot of people buy stuff at the Hasbro booth and almost immediately post it on eBay and then sell and ship it at the UPS store in the convention center before the con is even over.
They've hit eBay, for those who simply have to have them now. It looks like prices are in the low $200s right now - I think that $200 is probably a good number for which to aim (right now there's one unsold set at $225 BIN).
Personally, I intend to wait. But to each their own.

Do you think they will drop further in price?
I see very mixed reactions as they are colored now instead of the black on black art so i'm considering to buy them.

Right now it is the second day. Supply is still coming onto the market. I don't think that they'll drop far - not like last year's did - but I am guessing that they'll drop below $200 at their nadir.
Further consideration is that last year's offering had significant supply, especially compared to 2013. Many people were able to get one. The price dropped below $200 and stayed there until Jace became a multi-format monster. This year's crop of walkers is decent - certainly they're all standard-playable - but except for Liliana we've had access to them for a while. If they were going to make the jump to Modern or Vintage, they'd have done so already. I overpaid when the set first came out last year - I had missed the 2014 set on the website, so I ended up paying $350 for my set, and I didn't want to miss again, so I got aggressive and paid $300, right before the bottom dropped out of the market as supply was much larger again. I'm hoping not to make that mistake again, although there are a lot of $250 OBO sales available, and there are still 2.5 days left of the con, plus (hopefully) the HTS site sale, so that gives me hope for more stock.
TL;DR - yes, I think that the price will drop.

These are great. The best part is that they're all dead! (except Liliana)
I'm glad they're finally asking players their opinions on the FTV foils, as I really have no idea why they keep using that process. Maybe they'll tell us.
To those of you that like them, I am glad you do, but I think these are some of the worse card arts in recent history. The art has absolutely zero depth, it's just a person on a bland cloudy background.
its not about the background. the emphasis isn't, and shouldn't be, the background.
the appeal here is the zombification of the planeswalkers we know and some of us like. its different. its unique. the its the focus of the piece. you don't want a background to draw attention away from that, it defeats the entire purpose of the idea here.
if this is your major complaint with these... then they're a huge success.
I'm really stoked that they printed these! They're going straight into my gothic horror cube. A few of the Gatewatch (specifically, Gideon and Nissa) I wanted to include but the flavor just wasn't quite right. I know it's just an art change, but I don't feel bad about including them now.
Outside of my cube though, I think the design is really clever but I'm more or less indifferent in including them in decks. I never really liked the blackened planeswalkers (or whatever they're called?) either though. I've never actually seen one in person so I could be completely wrong, but they seemed very difficult to read and to really appreciate the art.
As far as the FTV foiling process, it's gotten better but the thing that still bothers me most is still the thickness. I don't like it.

The black-on-black was an interesting, artsy idea. I really think that they should've done it once and then moved on to something different. The hologram dot really messes up the minimalism. You're correct that they're very hard to read, and almost impossible to see in a trade binder. I've had people go through my binder several times and then go "Oh hey, I missed this the first three times!"
I'm not a fan of zombies, myself, so the concept to me is "meh". I do think that Eric did a good job with it, and I hope that they do something radically different next time (like this was radically different). Haven't seen these in the flesh (heh heh) yet, so I don't know how I'll feel, but I'm generally not a fan of the FTV foiling. Honestly I wish that they'd lay off the foils for exclusive alt-arts. Let the art be seen, especially because this is an avenue to really take chances with the art.

The focus isn't the background so it shouldn't be an issue? It doesn't need to be the focus, but you can't just ignore it. Look at any piece of art ever. Actually you don't even have to go that far, just look at almost any other magic card. The focus of Liliana of the Veil was the Planeswalker, but they didn't just throw her on a lame, bland, and generic background. Pretending a flaw isn't a flaw isn't helping the artwork or the artist.

"It's like some kind of Voltron... made of elephants??"
I think my only problem with these is the use of space. From an artist perspective they have way to much negative space on either side and it leaves them as rather uninteresting. Lilly does not suffer from that since her extended arms fill the frame more which eliminates the problem.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
