Yeah. I'd say on the overall it won't be as strong as mongrel was for numerous reasons. The color change was stronger then, partially because color mattered in that block and of course Terror, but also there's no free madness cards spoiled yet, like Basking Rootwalla, which is a mistake they won't make again.
Reach on this guy is almost completely superfluous, as there aren't a lot of fast 1/1 fliers in the set that will come out faster than this guy, and you'll be wanting to turn him sideways more often than not.
Still, I think he's going to be good.
Reach might have a reason for next set being Thopter-plane.
Wow! I'm really surprised they made this, especially after how safe they were with the discard-based Madness and Delirium enablers just last set!

They didn't care that he was the savior of Fort Keff, the great hunter of Ondu, the champion of Kabira. To them, he was just another piece of flesh, a thing with life to be drained away.
Because conservative bias is a far, far worse thing. Liberal bias doesn't, statistically speaking, make people stupid. Conservative bias (or at least Fox's version of it) does.
Funny story. When I was doing the illo for this one, it originally had a rotting corpse in the noose, but Creative thought it was too gruesome. So I put a bag over the head, and it turned out to be even worse.
So the poor fella ended up as clean skeleton and the snake is there because he likes the view, and not for the free food and drinks.
Ooo! Can we see some higher res versions? And possibly some of the concept sketches and different versions? (I'm a sucker for that stuff. =P)
Will we be adding green to modern BR madness? Is this playble?
well, it's not an auto splash + auto include because Stromkirk Condemned is a card.
certainly playable though.
That card has a once per turn clause.
This doesn't.
the other card is on color and pumps your entire team, also....
I haven't said that Noose Constrictor is a bad addition or even worse than Stromkirk Condemned...
All I said was it's not an auto include because of it as Stromkirk Condemned might just be enough without the need to change the mana base so you can cast stuff with G on cost.
Still, Noose Constrictor is probably better than anything else in standard to use along with madness.
that alone might be enough to warrant a splash and playing with a playset of both cards.
You're thinking of Standard Madness. A lot of people are thinking of Modern Dredge where the effect is worth less than the cost.

That's very interesting to know. Thanks for the trivia!

yes, of course.
my comment was a response to someone asking about splashing green to a RB madness deck
would be very weird if I answered that with a comment about modern dredge wouldn't it?
Just double checked and yeah, there's only one other Standard Green card that discards something and that's Pack Guardian. But now Wizards is basically saying "Oh, you wanted to play the B/R/U Maddness mechanic? Well, splash green for the best free discard outlet."
I get that it's a throwback to Mongrel, but still leaves a bad taste now that I've thought this.
Finally, another unfettered discard outlet. I was wondering if they would go that direction, as all the discard before it from the past few sets has been impeded with drawbacks.

I think what will be keeping him back is the rather inability for Madness decks to recoup their resources. Deep Analysis was a big reason that U/G Madness was strong, as was several of the flashback cards at the time allowing you to freely activate madness. Madness simply isn't as forgiving when you are discarding non-madness cards without a means to recoup these cards.
That said, I find it rather hilarious that the strongest Madness enabler we get in the entire block is... green.

Forest x2 + Noble Hierarch/Birds of Paradise/Elvish Mystic (any one-drop mana dork) x2 + Noose Constrictor + Vengevine x3, = turn 2 swing for 12 in Modern, with potential turn 3 kill follow-up attack?
