Could you please write "SPOILERS" in the title?
I clicked on this thread thinking it was pure speculation. But already the first sentence of the artbook text is a huge spoiler...
Aside from that, the artwork and text font looks pretty gorgeous. Maybe I should also start buying artbooks
Seriously though, it's pretty funny to read all this "I'm a rebellious planeswalker, but now I see that the power of friendship is way cool" saturday-morning cartoon show storyline in mtg. I guess as long as the limited game is good, it doesn't bother me much, but it still makes my inner english major cringe to read some of this stuff. Hire me, wizards! I'll write dialogue that doesn't sound like it was written for an episode of G.I. Joe!
So the Gatewatch is basically the Avengers of MtG?
More like the Superfriends.
I see what you did there.
Personally I hope some recursion is on her card, at least for planeswalkers. I'd be pretty happy with Nightshade1233's version of the Oath.
I'd imagine the original planeswalkers (in game), such as Ajani for white, would consider joining. Garruk may be redeemed when the Veil is destroyed, but his hatred towards Liliana makes this unlikely.
Alara ones, Elspeth would join if she is in control of herself after her revival through Erebos. Sarkhan and Narset, Sarkhan might join to fight primarily to fight Nico Bolas (I hope not though, since I am quite disgusted by Sarkhan's dragon fetish), Narset might join if Sarkhan joined.
Old walkers, Ugin would definitely consider this group to be young, naive, and reckless. Karn might join, to battle Phyrexia.
Enemy of my enemy is my friend is probably what's gonna happen with later members of Gatewatch.
I hate the magic story so much, I bet some random literature students could write a better one for a crate of beer.
I could not agree more. That said, if they`re going to save some money somewhere, I`d rather have them skimp on the writing than, say, design or R&D (or MTGO for that matter).

Oh man, who would've thought, the unstoppable eldrazi menace was once again thwarted by the power rangers without breaking a sweat. Handling three eldrazi titans? No big deal as long as everyone believes in the power of unity. What good are your threats when they are taken care of within the same set they're introduced?
On a more serious note, those lili artworks are outright amazing. I hope the black oath is very playable, would be a waste of art otherwise.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Liliana has never looked this good, I like how she looks more realistic and human. I`ve never actually felt anything for her as a character before, but here she actually looks like a person.

Well, they didn't annihilate Innistrad or kill Emrakul. They had to trap/kill it, though. Otherwise, it would just go somewhere else and they'd have to chase it since it would just continually destroy everything. I certainly hope we get at least one awesome colorless identity fat eldrazi besides Emrakul, though.
He'll piss off Liliana, (edit: "because she went too far!") Chandra will have grown chummy with her by then and take Lily's side.
Jace stands with Gideon because logically Gideon is always right because he's such a goodguy just 'cause - and Jace + Lily have a messy breakup again.
Cue cringworthy corny lines like "I guess it was too good to last" and "you'll always have a place in my h- planeswalker club."
Nissa, the 5th Wheel goes back to Zendikar to be bland somewhere else and allows someone else screentime.
Lily and Chandra go on a road trip into the sunset, Gideon is last seen at a bar, and Jace rebounds with Tamiyo.
All this, and more on the next Sparks and the Planeless
Seriously, just kill Gideon as soon as possible please.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

Yeah but as I understand it, around the time of Magic Origins they expanded the story team and decided to put the story much more on the forefront of the card game product.
I'd rather they just go back to skimping on writing if this low-rent Avengers knock off is what they come up with. Oh, and you just know some out of touch executive said something along the lines of "those comic book movies are popular with the kids lately, do something like that" shortly before the Gatewatch was created.
MFW Liliana uses her mind-shielding powers to dig up nasty secrets with which to blackmail the Gatewatch into helping her with her demon problem. We need a WILD CARD *****ES moment in this five-man lineup.
Who didn't see this coming? I barely even keep up with the story line but even I knew Emrakul was going to be defeated and Liliana would "reluctantly" join the gatewatch while Tamiyo wouldn't.

I've got five bucks on it.
Although unfortunately the crappy writing is likely not just an accident caused by lack of funding, but an intentional marketing decision (as noted by Fiveod above). That being said, I'm loving the cards and mechanics in this set so far; like you I would much rather have interesting, well-designed cards with a bland, boring storyline than the reverse.
The text tells you the basics of what happens at the end of Eldritch Moon so don't read if you don't want to know what happens with Emrakul
