I think I have gone off the deep end. I'm literally at that point where I simply cannot allow myself to care anymore. At first, I was angry. Then I was bummed out. Now, to see this...it's just so sad and wrong. And yet, I am incredibly conflicted. I don't often see a company actively choose to alienate a large part of their customer base. They had to know this would have a negative impact. They just had to. I mean, was there really not a single creative or development team member that said, "I dunno if it's the best idea to utterly destroy a tribe."
But then I think, well, we have been asking for something in the story to evoke fear for the plane. If the threat is supposed to be real, then perhaps we should be scared of the implications of that threat. Tell you what, destroying werewolves certainly has that effect on me. I am scared that I won't get to see any real werewolves again. So in that vein, I suppose this is a success?
I'm conflicted again because, "Hoorrayyy!!! We have a manual transformation trigger!!" But then, 5 mana to transform, 6 mana to transform, 7 MANA TO TRANSFORM. Wait WTF. Are you telling me that a 6/4 that deals 2 damage when it attacks is worth 10 mana? Is a 5/7 with Trample and Firebreathing worth 12 mana? Hmmm...I suppose I am just tired of werewolves being the "Limited" tribe. Let us branch out for goodness sake.
Oh, and is it worth all of that if the creatures don't play well with their lords? Mayor boosts one side, Immerwolf says you don't get to transform for these newbies. OUCH. But, from the story perspective, that makes sense. These are not the same creatures and do not have the same alliance now. Their alliance is to Emrakul (not that I think that is an okay thing).
I really wish I liked Eldrazi - it would make it so much easier to swallow this. But that art...it hurts my soul. It makes me hate this block - what draws me into this game is the strategy, certainly, but to a greater extent it's the art. Like many of you, seeing them turned into the very things I hate most about this game (for sooooo many reasons do I hate the Eldrazi) makes me sick.
Makes me wonder how Goblins players would feel to see their tribe annihilated this way. Or elves. Well, makes me look to humans players - their peeps got eldrazified too. they don't seem to mind. Probably comes down to the fact that there are so many humans in this game and on every plane that losing these ones really is inconsequential. Same for the other tribes I would assume.
Man, this sucks. It feels terrible having something so close to what you have been asking for (manual tranform triggers for werewolves) only to realize that it's being corrupted at the same time. It's like someone made your absolute favorite food, a food you don't often get to eat. They're walking over to you with it on a plate, showing you how delicious it is and then they slam it on the ground that hasn't been cleaned for months. They tell you to eat it off the floor. Hey, it's your favorite food so you should like it right? Ignore the fact that it's smashed on a dirty floor and like it.

Those are intended to be mana sinks, your opponent better wastes his removal fast on the smaller forms or they'll face the eldrazified, much more powerful forms later, this was already done with the Monstrous mechanic in Theros. There's plenty of mana ramping already, and I suspect there'll be some more coming down with this set too, starting with the artifact thingie that turns into an almost unblockable Serendib Efreet.

You summed this up pretty well for me. I'm a prerty competitive player and seeing a werewolf that may actually show up in games is exciting... The tribe was flavorful, unique, had amazing and consistent artwork, etc. and I feel like that is what was sacrificed. I asked for the eldrazi to be a threat, I wanted competitive werewolves...I never thought I'd be sad to see both come true, but here it is.
What bums me out the most is that there aren't any other planes with werewolves. It's a horror trope specific to innistrad and in general wolf power levels are kept fairly low on other planes. I just feel so let down because even as a casual tribe they were fun. Now I feel like unless we get a 3rd return set (pretty sure Maro said the horror tropes were mined quite deeply and hopefully the eldrazi aren't going to show up again) the tribe is done and there's no last huzzah to see them out.
Bleh, if they did this to elves is probably straight up stop playing magic. I play for 4 reasons:
Fun
Social interactions
Competition
Artwork
The werewolf deck falls flat on competitiveness, the artwork is weird and the tribe probably won't be revisited now, not being able to mix/match the new cards with cards like immerwolf isn't fun. So I won't bring a werewolf/wolf deck to a competition and it's just dead in the water for me.
I think the biggest issue with the tribe was the original flip trigger and the awkward midrange they pushed the stats into because they're inherently "stronger than humans and wolves." Limited feels like it touched one of my favorite tribes a bit too much as well. Just blah.
In regards to the eldrazi, I feel like "eldrazi winter" just left a huge sour taste in people's mouths and the overall prevelence of the tribe.
Regarding the art, I finally made the mental connection: Emrakul does to normal life the same thing that happened to people in the movie The Thing.
You beat me to it, the art for Sinuous Predator very much reminds me of the 1982 version of The Thing, especially at the beginning when it transforms into dog shape.
These werewolves with Vildin-Pack Alpha sounds insane. Kessig prowler a potential 4/4 with 1 mana if you have Alpha is insane.
Even better because they do not flip back so I can unload with three Prowlers the turn after Vildin is flipped and have 3 4/4 for 3 mana which is insane

*Shadows over Innistrad announced* Yes! Wizards is returning to my favorite plane!
*Shadows over Innistrad released* Cool. Nice way to mix it up a little, while still keeping it Innistrad.
*Eldritch Moon spoiler season* Oh. It's not Innistrad anymore. It's another Eldrizi tentacle-mob.
Innistrad was my favorite plane, and it will remain my favorite block. The Eldrazi make sense from a story perspective, but they've ruined a lot of what I like about the plane and sets as a whole. SoI was a pseudo return to Innistrad. Eldritch Moon is just Eldrazi 3. At some point, maybe we will finally get a proper return to Zendikar and Innistrad. Unfortunately, that won't happen for a while.

Vildin should have been legendary with some extra stuff. Ulrich is so ass. This is the better commander player in me saying this. As stacking multiple vildins isn't even that good. But in a perfect world it is nice to cast 1 mana 4/4.. but the odds of that happening is low.
Also I think these new werewolves don't play nice with Immerwolf, since they get locked in their pre eldrazi werewolf mode. Lots of fail all around imo.

I think Wizards was trying to get a twofer and combine two of the most popular sets in they're history (and also brought a ton to players into the game) with combining Innistrad (gothic horror) with Zendikar (Cthulu horror). The problems is it stomps on nostalgia which a lot of us like. However, in terms of flavor and design mechanics, what else could they have done that was new. They used up they're well of ideas and had to Meld (pun intended) two fun mechanics (Transform and Eldrazi Colorless) to create different horrors. I think the mechanics for a lot of new players is going to confuse the hell out of them and we might have the same problem that champions had where it was just too complex for some people. (Having to keep track of what cards and meld with other cards to create a third card is going to be a headache for newer players.)
So what we have now is people like us who loved the werewolf transform mechanic, and get ushered out for a transform mechanic which turns our beloved Lycanthropes in to Lycanthulutropes (yes the trope from thrope is intentional). I love Cthulu, I love werewolves, I do not need them to make a grotesque tentacle baby like the result of some tentacle hentai. And I assume I am not the only one

Ugh, so conflicted. Like the designs of the cards, which although outside of the prowler are mostly limited-oriented, but I hate the flavor so much. Not even that some of my fierce puppies were lost to the Emrakul scourge, but when MaRo confirmed that only Ulrich will be a classic werewolf, I died inside.
It just.....isn't the same. The art and flavor got me into the game, particularly werewolves. Now we come back to Innistrad and outside of Arlinn and Ulrich, it feels werewolves kind of got shafted again. I want to love these cards, but when there's no hope for anything but Eldrazi for my tribe, why even care at this pointime? These aren't the creatures that lured me to the game. If they'd just given me a small few that were immune, I could have gotten by. Oh well....
Is this actually a thing? Maro confirmed there will be no original WW style cards.
Just a curiosity on the story here - perhaps this is the wrong place. It seemed that Arlinn thought that she and her werewolves were going to be the last stand against the threat on the plane based on the first EMN Magic Story. Was she just wrong or did they decide to change that?
Kessig Prowler's flavor text suggests only some werewolves were corrupted by Emrakul.
Gotcha. I can't see the images on my work computer so I can't read the flavor text but thank you for clarification.
Kessig Prowler: In the wake of Emrakul, some werewolves’ human forms were lost forever.
Sinuous Predator: A different kind of transformation has taken place.
Dronepake Kindred: These new terrors will not recede with the setting of the moon.
Smoldering Werewolf: Never thought I’d see the day I’d be wishing to see just a plain old werewolf – Raf Gyel of the Quiver of Kessig
Erupting Dreadwolf: … heck, I’d settle for anything that even resembled a werewolf. - Raf Gyel of the Quiver of Kessig

Vorthos-player with way too much time on his hands and a love of thematic decks.
EDH - Yes, Each One is Named After a Song. I love tying music to my decks.
Maybe it's a little of overreacting, but honestly, I just feel like dropping MTG once more after those spoilers and that answer from MaRo. I knew Magic way before Innistrad, but I've played a little on the old Innistrad and goddamit i've loved to play with these butt-sniffers. Some months ago, i've gotten into touch once again with old-time friends of mine and we all came back to magic and made some kitchen table decks. I didn't think twice before completing playset of all the old dogs from first inns and it felt really great. Everyone was afraid of me and focused on killing me because they knew that if they forgot about me they'd just take 30 damage easily right into their faces (Thanks, instigator gang!). BFZ came and we started getting into the competitive standard. It felt awkward seeing eldrazis everywhere: in standard, modern and legacy, but it was okay. Then innistrad was announced and I got really hyped all of a sudden because they were coming back. They announced Arlinn and I was foaming from my mouth out of excitement. They revealed her card and I got a little frustrated that she was not oriented for the tribal, but I still loved reading about her and anticipating everything. We also gained many great toys in SOI such as village messenger, duskwatch recruiter and geier reach bandit. It felt like they finally realized how they overnerfed the tribe on the first block and everything was pointing that they would buff the tribe some more on Eldritch Moon (A set focused on the freaking moon, the coming of a werewolf planeswalker, Avacyn's death, no cursemute and a threat that Arlinn said would be faced only by the werewolves. They simply would dominate all the game tables!). And then Ulrich was revealed, and it was like they've just taken an old scrap that was rejected from first innistrad and threw it right at our faces. And then... those abominations. And Maro confirming that they simply just don't really care about a part of the players who waited six years for them to return. It doesnt matter if there are people who love this tribe and that we only get a shot at making some progress in innistrad... no. They just wanted to surprise everyone and add a hella lot of eldrazis there, even though we got really sick of them after the eldrazi winter. They didn't think twice about cutting all our werewolves to make room for that plague that literally infested the game as a whole in the last block. Not one single bastard in the design team seemed to care that werewolves, unlike other tribes, are exclusive to innistrad and, therefore, should have a little more of attention and support than other tribes who appear in a ton of other planes.
I'll just look for the rest of the set to see if they make single faced werewolves or make some noncreature support spells that help the ones from SOI. I'll also read the lore to try to figure out if there is any chance that Arlinn will have some impact and protagonism on other planes or if she will just be a one-time only planeswalker like tibalt. That way i'll know if i can watch the mtg lore from a distance waiting for the time when wizards realize how they neglected fans of the tribe like me. I know this won't impact WotC at all, but, just like they care way more about getting profit out of their product, I have the freedom to not give my money to a company that just cares so little about what their costumers want."We really fought you'd like what we did to Ulrich" N*GGA, HAD YOU TAKEN 5 MINUTES OF YOUR FREAKING TIME TO LOOK UP FOR SOME FAN MADE CARDS OF THE ALPHAS, YOU'D KNOW IN A MOMENT THAT WE FREAKING WANTED TRIBAL SYNERGY AND SUPPORT
Regarding the art, I finally made the mental connection: Emrakul does to normal life the same thing that happened to people in the movie The Thing.
Will it really?
I mean... every single time a 2/1 for 1 is spoiled, people will go nuts and post this...
but at the end of the day none of them make a real impact.
not even Kytheon, Hero of Akros has seen that much play, and that card is most likely A LOT better than this.
I'm already sick of seeing the "strictly better" Savannah Lions being praised and then doing nothing.
lol
The difference is that white is overflowing with playable 1-drops. Green, currently, is not. This fills a hole in green's lineup.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

Tried to pull away, but now I'm Back At it

The difference is that white is overflowing with playable 1-drops. Green, currently, is not. This fills a hole in green's lineup.
