how does this work with splinterfright? The zombie should have p/t equal to creatures in your graveyard at the time of activation, but is the spirit a 1/1 or is it also p/t equal to creatures in your graveyard?
The way I'm reading it, the zombie is a 0/0, but the spirit...I have no idea. Does the text box override the P/T?

I can tell you the zombie is a */*. Gatherer says "The ability that defines Splinterfright’s power and toughness works in all zones, not just the battlefield."
Well, the zombie is N/N, where N is the number of creatures in the graveyard when the zombie is put onto the battlefield. Since the zombie doesn't have any abilities it will remain that number even if the graveyard's contents change.

Oh I see now. So it'll come into play with P/T equal to whatever Splinterfright's last known stats in the graveyard. Ok. I get it. I still have no clue about the spirit though.
EDIT: Wait a second, it still has those stats in exile?

As flavorful as it is (and it's extremely flavorful, don't get me wrong) I weep everytime I see artifacts, in particular rares like these. Corrupted grafstone, tamiyo's journal, scroll of the masters, the list of very tame artifacts also happens to be a very long one. I beg you, the artificers of Kaladesh, please break this tradition of unplayable artifacts this September.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Pitch Emrakul, Aeons Torn EOOT, activate for 5, have a 16 total power and a Flying, Protected Annihilator 6 on your upkeep. Just need a reliablbly free discard outlet.
"When Emrakul is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library."

Which is a triggered ability, that can be responded to by Soul Seperator.
Since splinterfright's ability is a Characteristic Defining Ability, it's applied to the spirit in the first sublayer of layer 7. Then...it depends on if the ability setting it to a 1/1 is considered a p/t setting effect, or part of the copy effect. I'm leaning towards the former, but someone should consult Quicksilver Gargantuan. If that's the case, the power toughness setting effect steps in after the CDA, and sets it back to being a 1/1.

That is a triggered ability instead of a replacement effect as it usually is. Works just fine if you activate it in response.
As for the card itself, man dat flavor. Not terribly overcosted either. I mean, Black reanimation costs 5, so zany Colorless reanimation with an upside should cost around 7. Would love this card for EDH reanimation in mono- decks if it costed just 1 less to either activate or cast.

"If the chosen creature has a characteristic-defining ability that sets its power and/or toughness, that ability will not be copied. For example, if Quicksilver Gargantuan copies a Nightmare, it will not gain the ability that sets its power and toughness to the number of Swamps you control. As such, it will remain a 7/7."
So the Sprinterfright Spirit Token would be a 1/1 without that CDA.

aww guess it doesn't.... boo. thanks for the info!
Splinterfright has a characteristic defining ability, which works in all zones. So you'd get a 1/1, flying spirit, with his ability so it'd be bigger.

Having to self sacrifice was just unnecessary amounts of development playing it safe. The meta wasn't going to get overrun by an artifact that takes 8 before it does anything and comes online turn 6 and needs multiple bombs in your graveyard, I mean yikes. As an engine, it would be self limiting anyway. For that amount of extremely high investment and setup, asking for a repeatable effect doesn't seem unreasonable, I don't think if this same card was spoiled without the sac clause anyone would be saying Birthing Pod 2.0!
My biggest gripe with this games development team for a long time has been their willingness to turn the most creative and fun designs into complete jank novelties for fear of every seeing them in standard, putting such a ridiculous gap between pushed simple cards like sylvan advocate and gimmicks like scrambleverse. This kind of micromanaging the metagame while only making token efforts to appease johnny combo player with intentionally underpowered cards is something I disrespect. It would be better to throw everything up in the air and see where it lands and enjoy a diverse game and resort to bans if necessary to stop another combo winter than to have another boring decade of turning creatures sideways

Hilarious. This card is super flavorful, but is hot garbage otherwise.

Yup! the exile zone is included in all zones.

cool.
this card is pretty bad, but it's so cool I want a dozen of it.
