It's definitely being oversold, but it still seems strong. The cantrip is a huge part of what makes Remand playable, and Mana Leak is probably just a better Remand #5-8 in Delver because it doesn't give up card parity.
Entwine is specifically worded to only allow for two effects, Escalate allows for more.
The comprehensive rules for Entwine make it clear that entwining a spell chooses ALL modes, not just "two" or "one more". (CR 702.41)
They used "choose both" instead of "choose all" because the former is more grammatically correct.
But it does not allow for the selection of multiple abilities at the rejection of one.
You cannot Entwine Blessed Alliance and get just two of the abilities. You get one or all. Escalate allows for a selection.
this card is amazing, I will be playing it alongside a remand in modern instead of 2x remand for sure. it is good in most of the situations remand isn't. vs infect, affinity, and burn you can bounce their creature which can be relevant because bouncing their spells is pretty bad. it does everything that remand does and more, you just don't get a card out of it. regardless, I am sold. I want that gameday promo it looks sweet.
I'm going to cross my fingers and hope this isn't priced high to start, and try and pick up a playset of foils as pre-order. They might be worth a lot a few years from now.

Which doesn't change the objection to the statement. Entwine is all, Escalate allows you to choose any number. A spell with 3 modes, Entwine would be either 1 or 3, Escalate would be 1,2 or 3.

That flavour text makes me cringe though. It seems like it has been getting worse every set.
An enigma as vexing as life itself.
But it still looks well aligned for Standard, where it would fit nicely alongside Reflector Mage against decks expecting to flip Westvale Abbey or soak up damage before dropping a Languish or Chandra, Flamecaller.

I think they were aiming for "clever" but accidentally landed on "smarmy".

Now I'm curious if we end up seeing an instant or sorcery that has hexproof instead of can't be countered.

We may have some true U/R Tempo based aggro deck looming. I do think it's tempo card, a deck like Bant CoCo will pick this up for sure.
Modern: Decks I'm playing right now:
G Mono Green Tron (34-10-3 paper record, only SCG/Regionals/PPTQ record)
C Eldrazi Tron (9-5)
UG Infect
RW Burn
needs a tempo deck to shine though.
