The concept and the flavor of the mechanic is fine.
However, I personally don't like the "in order for this card to be good you need to have another card named X" thing. It also seems a bit parasitic.
Note that's not part of a keyword, leaving it free to be as open as they like. Town's front side might be as open as "if you both own and control a human", or it might not. But by keeping it unkeyworded they leave the possibilities open.
Assuming this whole meld thing is actually real, there is a pretty much 100% chance that Hanweir uses it, as indicated by the Emrakul symbol instead of the sun or moon.

This spoiler is exactly why Wizards hates leaks. Same thing with the generic mana amd Kozilek last year. Thr leaked new mechanic/card has no context, a small, vocal contingent of the online community gets needlessly mad and starts doomsaying, and a potentially decent/good idea goes sour before we even know how it works.
Perhaps, but I would rather have this than the control. They need to understand they will never have total control; they are the ones creating the "pressure" to leakers.

I'm not getting into a philosophy of leaks debate here. I am just suggesting that if players get contextless leaks, we need to be more generous in evaluating them until we get the full context.
There's one other option. What if both Rats and Scavenger have the same backside, and when you meld them, you overlay them, and then it takes TWO removal spells or two deaths to kill it?
Instead of Synchro or Fusion summons, why not Xyz summon instead? A card made from two creatures needs to be killed twice (when it dies/bounces/exiles the first time, remove one card and still have the other?)

Wow that´s is the most stupid thing to say to be honest. Why aren´t they allowed to have control over spoilers? I never understood people like you who want Wizards to suffer for no other reason than "herpderp its their own fault that they can´t control their leaks now suffer!" Seriously have some compassion man and try to understand why it´s hurting them just as it would if people spoiled entire movies, games, music before it came out.
The user who first posted the picture on reddit (leakyfaucets123) also made some other posts. No picture though, so take them with a grain of salt!
"Emerge is a new keyword. You can sac a creature to help pay for the cost of an emerge guy. Colors don't count though."
So... Convoke with sac instead of tap? Golgari Aristocrats is going to gain a lot of power with that.

Rose tint my world, keep me safe from my trouble and pain.

It will probably work like BFM. It is one creature for the purpose of being killed/bounced. Anything else would be confusing and would require counters (what happens when you bounce it then kill it or kill it then bounce it?)
The biggest question for me is, what happens if you Altered Ego one half and then play the other half - they probably both get exiled and don't return (since one of them can't merge). Also what happens if you have 2 humans 1 rat? They all get exiled at the same time, but only 2 can merge.
Interesting, the other Shapeshifter could copy the merged card and effectively send both into exile. Then they would come back unexiled (triggering the human side ETB) and merge again next combat.
Yet I think that if they want to make it a decent ability for limited, they need to make rare cards with meld have interesting abilities on their front-side or at least make them mildly efficient costwise, otherwise they wil most likely be dead rares most of the time.
'dead rares' - in this case they are both common. In fact, I expect most melds to be common/uncommon for drafting. The only legendary meld that makes sense are the two angels - and they better be damned good on their front side because you won't see them together in Limited very often.
I'm not getting into a philosophy of leaks debate here. I am just suggesting that if players get contextless leaks, we need to be more generous in evaluating them until we get the full context.
We received part of a card from Wizards (Hanweir). We received part of a card from a leaker (this). Wizards wants to control messaging, but they don't mind denying context, so we can't evaluate with their method, either.
The Hanweir preview had enough Wizards-intended context to make most people excited or at least interested. This unintended leak has no context through Wizards' design and has created a lot of hypercritical speculation. Context doesn't need to be a full explanation. It's just setting and accompanying information that goes with a preview. Hanweir had a lot of deliberate, Wizards-approved context, even without us getting the full mechanical explanation. These leaks have zero such context and, in my experience in the RM, tend to overwhelmingly create misconceptions and harsh (often unfounded) criticism.
Hmm Meld seems pretty hard to pull off, so I'm guessing the flip sides are going to be good. I'm not sure if I like the mechanic though. It doesn't do enough to be functional and good.
Emerge, if a true mechanic, was something I designed a long time ago based on the old Offering mechanic. Pretty cool; and it seems pretty good.
Eldrazi Emergence seems good but I dislike how it has to exile itself.
As long as Meld cards aren't Mythical Rare, they should be okay. Though I think it should have just been you have this named creature then need one creature of specific types like "Human Rouge"
I've seen a number of people comparing the meld mechanic to B.F.M., Spirit of the Night and Scion of Darkness. While I can see the similarity between Meld and BFM, can anyone explain how Spirit and Scion relates to Meld?
There's no point in doomsaying until we get the nitty-gritty details and more cards with the mechanics.
So far we have:
1. A town horror with high power that creates tokens. Everything depends on the flip condition.
2. A 2/1 for 2. Fine for limited, 2 power for 2 mana is the normal baseline. We know you can get a 5/6, almost certainly with haste, maybe with other abilities.
3. A 2/2 for that returns a 3 CMC or less from GY to hand. So, a worse gravedigger, which was a card almost always playable in limited. It's a little worse, but better if you have the rat in play. (It will immediately flip in the attack step.)
So all known meld cards are reasonable without their meld or the known meld has quite enough power. Once we know the exact way the mechanic works (for example, would bounce return both cards to your hand?) we will be able to evaluate the true power. There is a good chance we'll learn very soon these details.
The design is weird and unique for MTG. It may look a lot like it was taken from other card games, but the devil is in the detail. Even so, I'd rather have this than yet another mechanic about putting a +1/+1 counter on your creatures. As far as I've seen, these seem well design, balanced even without melding and flavorful.
Chittering Host will prbably have CMC 2, which seems quite low for such a big thing...
It's 7 CMC actually
That would be a second solid guess. The question is if only one of the two card is considered the front side or both of them. That is probably one of the more intricate rules attached to this mechanic.

It annoys me that people compare new mechanics like this one and start saying that magic is imitating other collectable card games. You seem to forget that Magic is the original CCG, the design space for these games is kind of the same, and the guys in magic R&D are more responsable exploring this space, taking more time to reach certain mechanics because they care about the long term life of the game
Meld seems to be a very flavorful mechanic (looking at you Hanweir) but I dont see it in much constructed play. In limited, maybe. Just maybe. Only if there isn't much added removal in EMN.

I agree with you. Wizards says that things that are not repeated, such as Cmc, are the same, but with meld that is the most unbalanced thing ever. So, having it 7cmc makes sense, but is it how its going to work out?

I am trying to get better at making decks. I have had trouble creating more competitive decks as I only really build with the cards I have. I dont have that many value cards, in function or expense. I (almost) never play at FNM type events so its not like im playing against $2k decks. If I do usally play at one, Its a draft or limited game. Any advice on building decks is greatly supported! DMs are appreciated.
Thank you!
To put it more simply, it's like saying, "I can prove Jesus is real and loves you. See? Here's my Hispanic friend Jesus. He's had a crush on you for a long time. Tell em' Jesus."
Here's a joke! Whats the internal temperature of a Taun-Taun?
I can't say that I love what this seems to be. It's one of those linear mechanics that gets relegated to Limited chaff because it's too hard to balance and then warps the format by favouring players lucky enough to pull a critical mass of Meld pairs. I'll predict that the vast majority of Meld will be absolutely unplayable in constructed aside from maybe one or two pairs that are obviously overpowered.
MaRo said DFC cards are kinda hard to do logistically and we probably won't see DFCs too often in normal sets. This leads me to believe that, unfortunately, only the card that has the exile ability will have the transform side. RIP BFM again
Nevermind, just saw the videos on the mothership. BFM-style cards, yay! A total of 3 pairs in EMN so we're getting common, uncommon and rare I guess. No Bruna+Gisela apparently.
While I get some of this yu gi oh criticism I rather like this idea and if it turns out to suck well its only for one set.

SonofaBith - Wizards was so excited about making the packaging for Modern Masters 2 recyclable, they decided to make most of the rares and all but 1 of the UC's recycle-bin ready too. Convenient!

It's a similar sort of "multiple cards combine" sort of mechanic. Scion of Darkness used Dark Suplicant to voltron up the big guy. Spirit of the Night is far more direct, with Urborg Panther, Feral Shadow, and Breathstealer. There is also the Kaldra equipment (Helm of Kaldra, Sword of Kaldra, and Shield of Kaldra) which function similarly.
It's a pretty old mechanic that is just getting a new twist, really.
