For five mana, would adding 'and gains trample' to the ETB/front flip trigger be too much?
And I'm not the biggest fan of Werewolves, but I do agree with the sentiment that some ability to help other werewolves flip would have done wonders for this card.
I personally was hoping for something like
"nonhuman werewolf creatures you control cannot transform,"
but I learned to quit expecting WotC to print what I wanted a while ago
I wonder if they just skipped the part where wizards said this will be a powered down standard.
We didn't miss anything. We just think it's bull***** and continue to be upset about it.
Well if you wanted a format that had a consistent power level then standard isn't it. You can't expect Shadows or Eldritch Moon to be the same power as previous sets. That's not how Wizards does things. There are spikes and there are points where the power is low. You have to learn to live with that. You can be as upset with the power of standard as you want. However, standard will always be a format with high and low points. If you want a format with a consistently high power level play modern or legacy or something.
Tovolar would have been sweet but he actually has the opportunity to be printed in a set (standard or supplemental) other than a DFC set. Considering that he doesn't ever revert to human form, he doesn't need to be a DFC thus we can hope to get him in something like a Commander release.
I am holding out hope for that.
I'll restate, that I am glad we have a rules-abiding commander for all of us that want to play werewolf tribal in EDH. I am just saying that this guy feels far more like one of my 99 than my commander. He just isn't special at all. Furthermore, with commander rules, I would not want to pay 7+ mana for his effect after he dies once so he will most likely just be used for his colors and rules compliance in my deck.
Actually, now that I think about it...I was only keeping that build R/G because I was anticipating a legendary werewolf to be those colors. Now that I know this is what I get to work with I am probably going to find a Naya Legendary and just use it for its colors (since that's all I would really be doing with Ulrich). Adding white allows me to play some prison style stuff and have more control over the beastly transformation
Werewolf planeswalker and werewolf legendary, that's a great start for werewolf tribal to be a "real tribe" and just needs another plane or two to be dominant on to be a bit more competitive. Werewolves have always been one of the tamer tribes, but more flavorful. Personally, I feel that werewolves should be evergreen.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Instead of being how it is, I'd rather "when X enters the battlefield or transforms to X, all humans and werewolves you control get +2/+2 until end of turn, Transform"
And "whenever this creature transforms into X, each werewolf you control may fight target non-werewolf you don't control"
Similar, stronger, and fills tribal synergy, instead of being a wolfir silverheart and gruul ragebeast hybrid. Maybe even bump the cost by 1 for balance purposes.
I think WotC intended us to cast Arlinn Kord. You then cast Ulrich on turn 5, buffing something else, and +1 Arlin to give Ulrich +2/+2, vigilance, and haste.
Great answer! Honestly I think its suppose to be a perspective piece were ulrich is closer to him than the wolf and is looking downward like the artist is in a tree stump or something. I hate the stumpy little dwarven arms though...

He's disappointing, guys...it needs a build around deck. It could make the cut into standard as top of the curve in a zoo-like deck, but that's all. Sadness...no modern viable legendary werewolf...
Oh noes, the niche standard tribe isn't one of the average of three cards per set that break into the power fest that is Modern! WHATEVER SHALL WE DO!!!!
You know what, he should have given +8/+8, Annihilator 10, Trample, Infect, Flying, and cost RG. That would have been Modern playable!
People just seem so easily disappointed these days. Everyone is bashing this and the new Emrakul. I wonder if they just skipped the part where wizards said this will be a powered down standard. I think this card is perfectly fine. Not insane but not bad. It will probably show up in standard every so often and I'm gonna test it in modern werewolves. People need to stop expecting the power level of the old Innistrad.
Emrakul and Ulrich don't even match the power level of current standard. Emrakul is an absurdly worse ramp target than Newlamog and compare Ulrich to Avacyn. Wotc dropped the ball of these two legendaries and you know it.
I know what? I don't have to give in to anything and say "Oh, Ulrich and Emrakul are bad cause they don't live up to the hype." They are fine cards. I just don't understand the mentality of anything not as powerful as X card is bad. The idea of saying a card is bad and YOU know it is just not a good mindset to be in. I can like this card. You don't have to.
So you're only argument is "I think the cards are fine and that's my opinion."? Got it.

Cards are game pieces, and should be treated as such, easily replaceable.
Cards are not money, investments, or a retirement fund, and should never have been treated as such.
Wizards made a mistake caving to speculators once, and we still pay for that mistake 19 years later.
Happy is the man who has broken the chains that hurt the mind and given up worrying once and for all. Be patient and tough. One day this pain will be useful to you.
How bad is that werewolf art? What is he, 4'6"? It's like Danzig turned into a wolf with a Napoleon complex.
Maniak needs to stop being commissioned for werewolf work. This card looks pretty much the same as Sage of Ancient Lore. His other contribution to werewolves. They look enough alike that it keeps Ulrich from seeming special. But also, his interpretation of a werewolf is just stupid looking. It was excusable on the Sage because i figured it would be a one off style and it's not a very good card. But seeing it a second time makes me unhappy
I have one built and it actually works fairly well in a casual setting. It can be pretty quick but it's other focus is cursing my opponents to pull the attention away from me. I think of it like passing the curse of Lycanthropy. Curse of Stalked Prey, Curse of Predation, Curse of Chaos, they all incentivize people to attack each other instead of me (except the person who has the curse on him of course. But we can handle one person). Lurking Predators and Ward of Bones are very helpful as well

Not really. What I said is yes an opinion but what I was getting at was the "You know it" line. Essentially the person was saying that I should just accept that a card is bad because he said it was. I still stand by not judging a card based on the past. Standard is a format that has shifts so you can't expect every card to be as powerful as something before it. That's all I'm saying.
I was kind of hoping for his back side to make your werewolves (and maybe other permanents?) ETB transformed. That solves the weirdness about the front and back having different names but being legendary.

I mean, they could have given Vildin-Pack Alpha a different ability and let this guy have ETB transformed. Also, isn't an ability that doesn't work well in multiples exactly the kind of ability you want on a legendary creature, because you can't have multiples of it?

Yeah... and the power level has *been* this low since Theros (arguably since Gatecrash).

Why would they do that while they(WotC) are pushing more eternal formats? I'm convinced WotC has a cyclical strategy with power level that oscillates from standard to eternal back to standard again. When the standard numbers are peaking, start to push the eternal formats by printing special sets like EMA, MM, vault and Commander. Nudge people into the eternal formats ever so gently by lowering the power level in standard. This works two fold because it pushes standard players toward eternal formats plush keeps older players happy by adding value to their collections. Then when standard numbers start to plateau, back off of the eternal push a bit and elevate advertising toward standard. While doing this, start raising the power level of standard either by creating new power cards or by reprinting older cruxes. Once standard starts taking off again, repeat.

I dunno- they're not really supporting those formats at the moment so much as sustaining them (to a degree).
I would argue that printing new cards those formats can actually use
(Abrupt Decay, Snapcaster Mage) is better "support" than mere reprint sets,

Support sustain, you say tomAto I say tomato. What better way to get people into legacy than reprint a bunch of expensive cards and let standard and draft players pop packs? I mean WotC didn't have to print EMA. There is no real reason for it outside the quick money grab scenario and I don't think WotC plays the short game. They're too savvy a business for that.

That would mean you get a gigantic "alpha" strike if your team transforms in your upkeep or massacres all the opponents creatures if they transform.
As it is, a very very generic GR fattie. Incredible boring as it does nothing thats really usefull and that at 5 mana, which is also quite a lot.

It seems weird to me that so many people wanted the legendary werewolf to have abilities from other werewolves that don't work well in multiples.
