they are not spiders but they are of the arachnid family which spiders are a part of. This is just an oversight on Wizards as they either didn't realize the difference between insect and arachnids or them just not caring enough to differentiate the two.
The creature types for terrestrial arthropods are basically insect or spider in WotC's eyes. Actual spiders get the spider type, everything else gets the insect type regardless of the number of legs or body segments.
Theyre messing around with rarity here. Bloodbraid Elf is uncommon and this is rare? In a set with Giant Tortoises running rampant, not sure this is worth it.
Ah memories! My first competitive standard deck ran 4 of these guys. Their role was to clear a creature from the board, and they played that role very well!
Kinda think this should have been downgraded to uncommon though. After all, it's just a glorified Lightning Elemental.

It's also 4 power with haste and shroud in a format where, presumably, creature-less strategies will be viable. Also, two hybrid mana is more flexible for an early pick than RG. I still might pick Bloodbraid Elf over Giant Solifuge, but that has more to do with BBE's very high power at uncommon than any serious shortcomings of GS at rare. It's niche/mediocre, not bad.

Limited this makes sense as an uncommon, it isn't even the best Ball Lightning variant.
