Paper pauper makes the most sense. It already has somewhat of a paper following. Would also provide an official stance on how paper vs online rarity discrepancies should be handled.
My local community have a paper pauper magic tournament every week, i just bought all the format pool of pauper for play it and for play whit some friends, its a very good format and very cheap for play in paper like 120.00 all the pool (including bolts, delver, probe, dark ritual, pyro/hydroblast ...)
Paper Pauper makes sense. More importantly, it's really fun to say out loud.
Peter Pauper picked a pack of Pauper Masters, how many proper paupers did he procure?
If the new format is No Reserved List Legacy, then stock up on Dracos now because Dracosplosion will be literally the only deck worth playing. Oh, you're playing shocks and fetches and I can burn you for 16 on turn 3 with basically zero setup? Well then gg. You didn't deal damage to yourself with your lands? Okay, then I'll sac my tapped lands to Fireblast you for the other 4. And I have Force of Will backup. Because this format is not poorly conceived at all.
Of course, that's not the format because it's an utterly terrible idea. Even the people who had massive enough ******* boners over the idea to create a subreddit dedicated to the format have given up because no onecares.

I have serious doubts about Sanctioned Pauper—
that seems like it would sell far fewer packs than most any other format they could choose.
Agreed. People don't buy packs of a new standard set hoping to pull a new common from it when you can just buy the card for 10 cents. It isn't even something they can make a supplemental set around since you can't really build a limited format out of just commons. A new eternal format starting post urza block is something they could still make a set like eternal masters for that would sell packs. I don't feel like they would sanction any highlander variant because the high variance that's inherent in those formats makes them incredibly hard to balance in a competitive setting. A post-modern format starting with the new borders doesn't really make sense because there just aren't enough cards for it yet to make it feel significantly different from standard. I don't think they would just straight up ban the RL from Legacy either (it's not like they really support legacy much as it is, and like others have said, with a legacy GP right around the corner it would be a bad PR move to change the format so drastically), so a new format that starts after the RL ends just seems to make the most sense.
I believe him.
It's not that I want to believe him or not since I don't care much about a new eternal format because it's probably going to be really expensive.
If he gets wrong... well, so what?? He already did it right before.
An inside person or a very good speculator, who knows, I'm sticking with his word although proofs are missing
To be fair, he also already got it *hilariously* wrong with his batch of Oath spoilers. So incredibly wrong, that his spoiled Jace was ripped verbatim from an obvious fan-made card.
This makes me suspect that he doesn't actually have any actual source of note.
His most recent "leak" aside from this involved stating that something from the Eldrazi deck was going to be banned in modern. Which pretty much everybody who was even remotely paying attention to the format.
THe concept of "eternal masters" was also not a new one when he posted it; it is a concept that had been bouncing around for quite some time, and I'm fairly certain I heard the name Eternal Masters conjectured about as early as last year. Equally, he wasn't even accurate on the name *or* the time frame (As he said it was Exceptional Masters in the spring).
His afformentioned Jace prediction was just laughable.
His G/B land prediction was completely off.
He likes to say he spoiled 15 things correctly, but the truth isn't quite so rosy on that front. He got Gideon pretty well, the Battle Lands (Which I'm giving one accurate prediction here because they are the same), Omnath, and Undergrowth Champion. He *claims* to have over 15 correct spoils, but the reality is this:
4 Correct enough card spoils
2 Completely incorrect cards spoiled
2 "Announcement" spoils that people long before him were talking about.
To be absolutely frank, he has not had a single fully believable spoiler since BFZ. Which makes me think his info was a 1-off random chance event.
If there is a new competitive format, it will probably be a pro tour format. If so, it will be a format that is in some way focused on the newer sets, since one of the reasons they dropped modern from pro tour was exactly because it didn't showcase the new sets well.
I think this is what makes more sense. They banned Modern from the PT because they want to sell packs. This would allow new and younger players to play in a competitive format, also selling more packs because these players love to open packs and add the cards they open to their decks.
I've been playing some tournaments of this format at my LGS, and it's incredibly fun. However, Wizards "hid" it on MTGO months ago, so it's hard to tell...
I understand why many people on this site are against no reserve list legacy (mostly due to heavily investment in Reserve list cards).
How ever I'm very glad this is not mirrored outside this heavily enfranchised community.
kmon, daddy wants to build melira pod again without duels
People play Legacy by and large because it is a great format. One of the reasons its a great format is because tutoring for yet another midrange value creature with etb triggers is not a very strong strategy, and decks don't uniformly have creatures. In fact in general creatures are not an especially strong strategy cf Modern, outside of tempo lists (delver/fish), Infect, Elves and hatebears- Death and Taxes and Maverick, and then perhaps Nic Fit. That sounds like a big list but as a percentage is not compared to some big beats like Miracles, Storm, Lands, Painter etc. In Legacy wastelocks exist (wasteland and crucible) too.

People with belligerent signatures are trying to compensate for something....
If a Legacy format that excludes the cards on the RL was created and it overtook Legacy as we know it in popularity, what would happen to the cards on the RL? Would they drop in price, because they are not being sought after for competitive decks?
The prices would probably drop, but not too much, I imagine, still all of those should take a good 25% hit, and yes that isn't much to me.
Would be really cool if Wizards would make Pauper an official format, but Wizards didnt interest, why support a format that does not sell new products ? Which players would pay for "pauper masters" booster full of commons reprints ? It's not as "eternal master", you don't have wasteland of FoW to Attract customers.
Given that there will be many return sets to come this could be a lot of fun. No way I think this is what this thread is about but plane constructed if there is one return a year could be fantastic.
As I see it, four possibilities. From least likely to most likely:
1) Block Constructed.
Serves two purposes (selling the newest set and providing the most accessible Constructed format possible). But historically when it existed it was a mixed bag - original Ravnica block was phenomenal (one of the best Constructed formats ever), but original Mirrodin was terrible. So was Innistrad block.
The risk of it either being eclipsed by Standard, or splitting the Standard playerbase are probably too big to overcome, however. And why announce it now?
2) Something between Standard and Modern.
Modern is now about 15 years of cards, and Standard is 1.5. There's room between those two points, with something like RTR and up being viable as a format that would be more accessible than Modern and with more room for new cards to impact the game.
3) Pauper
This format has real legs on its own even if there's disputes over the finer points of the rules. Already popular on MTGO and EMA has a lot of support for it there.
4) Eternal (Legacy with all Reserve List cards banned, and a rebalanced banned list broadly similar to Legacy's but possibly with some cards added or removed)
This would make sense as something to push EMA, especially as the removal of a bunch of truly broken cards that are on the reserve list (LED, City of Traitors) would change the balance of a lot of decks in the format making it quite different to Legacy. Additionally the downgrade from Alpha duals to shocklands would add burn and possibly other aggro to the competitive decks in the format.
WotC has seemingly gone out of its way to stock EMA with Pauper staples.
I do not see notable evidence for this... only 5 commons so far. Although the commons are pretty good, so are the uncommons, so are the rares. I think it is just a good cards set in general. If the commons were good and the other rarities were pretty mediocre, that would be something.
I believe we will see a new M15 forward format at some point. The new border/holo were to combat forgeries and give some confidence in the market. Whether it is soon enough for that format to be implemented I don't know.
They also need to do something for confidence in the value of cards now that standard only lasts 18 months max.
So that would lead to Modern being replaced by two formats - no reserve list extended (as a way to tap into the 'Legacy' market via premium product) and M15 forward.
This thread is not doing anything productive and is fast devolving into trolling and baseless speculation. It's being locked for the time being. If Oblivioned One is indeed correct, we should see the actual information on this today.
that seems like it would sell far fewer packs than most any other format they could choose.

A booster pack with nothing but commons. It'll be great. If I know this community, it will be nothing but high praise to Wizards.

Cause there's no way for any deck in a reserve list-less legacy to deal with a 3 mana sorcery on turn 2 or 3.
Right. It'd the be all end all of the format, full stop. Got it.
