So I did a little more research into this, after recently playing with friends. Love it.
.
However... Honestly, as an edh player... My ONLY interest is the plane cards. The deck cards seem meh to me, with few exception.
I tried looking online to buy them, and the 2012 planes are a fair deal, about 20ish. However 2009 is a new nightmare. Is this easily found at a fairly light price? If not I might get this set or look for alternatives
The problem with this product reflects on fundamental problem Wizards has with secondary products like Planechase. They release them in limited quantity. Then each of the unique cards in them implicitly becomes rare. Secondary market price raises as they become hard to find. When Wizards comes around to reprint them, they look at the secondary market price and feel locked into respecting it, due to their Chronicle psychosis. The result is that the cards can never be reprinted casually.
Having chosen to reprint the few chase, non-plane cards in Eternal Master, one wonders why Wizards didn't simply reprint the plane cards by themselves. Then again, I think they would have stumbled further: they'd have priced them high and without even decks to play with, it would be even less a casual product. Oh well, I guess it was doomed from the start.

I am rather surprised they didn't just reprint the planes in one big deck and then make some new ones to even out to 100, put a deck box to hold them all, a planar dice or two, maybe a spin down, maybe throw a promo card in there of something decent, make it $40 and you got a product.
In the end I can only hope that people will sell the planes in their little sealed pack so I can get them all.

This is the most wrong statement I've ever seen. They literally print these products to demand, meaning for about a year as long as they are selling they print more. The 'limited' supply you see is from people NOT buying the product, for various reasons. There is a problem with their 'print to demand' though, and its that they print the entire set to demand not individual decks, so if only 1 deck is selling it looks like they are printing limited amounts. They tried to fix this with True-Name Nemesis, printing twice as many of those decks but still requiring other decks being printed. Though it seems now they are just being more careful about making such desirable cards thus limiting demand.
Printing just the plane cards doesn't make sense, because you are printing 'unplayable' cards without any 'real' magic cards. If they ignore this they still have the problem of what to charge for such a thing. If they look at the secondary market they 'should' charge over $100 for the set of plane cards and almost no one would pay that. If they ask players it would be something like $10 for the 80 planes and they wouldn't ever do this.
People trying to justify the MSRP is reminiscence of the same people justifying MM2's MSRP back then. It's not hard to see that Wizards wants a slice of the secondary market. The only problem is that you're paying more for less these days.
I'm just not sure if this is a sustainable model. It could be at its peak.

I was thinking something around those lines. However...
Well, you sure put into practice your classes on how to foster discussion! Wizards only reprint these special products if there is crazy, obvious demands. When they do an extra print runs, they have to print a minimum amount for it to be profitable. They must ensure they can sell the new print run. Its not like a regular set and not like you make it appear.
This might just rival Commander's Arsenal for the worst secondary product Wizards has ever released. I have never seen a CA get purchased. Every copy the two stores closest had to be had either went to tournament prizing when they couldn't sell it, or just rots on the shelves. I really want that CA spindown. That thing is damn sexy.
But at least it had some reprint value. The Planechase decks were a small step above regular starter decks, and offered far less value than any Commander product or most of the Duel decks. Hell, even the Archenemy decks were better. And they want $150, most of it because of the plane cards no one ever uses? I have 45 of the planes just sitting in a box. Brought them to the store a couple times, not a soul wanted to use them.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

The thing with certain types of products like Commander Arsenal or the upcoming Planechase Anthology box set (among other similar products), is that while there may be little demand in the area depending upon the location of the shop, the size of the shop's customer base, and other factors, it should be noted that these sorts of products still sell quite well, and often at significant markups later on, online (ebay for example). In the case of Commander Arsenal, those are going for $300+ online now, and selling at $300+ due to the demand for what comes in it, and general collectability.
The Planechase decks as well, while admittedly the original planechase decks were interesting, they didn't include anything except for reprints, and other than the zombie or artifact deck, the others often just ended up sitting there, aside from times when people were looking to buy the entire set of 4 decks. However, online these were often good sellers, and though I haven't checked since the announcement of the planechase anthology set, the old decks actually were all selling for rather significantly above their old MSRP, not necessarily due to the value of the cards in the decks, those would be easy to replicate for somewhat reasonable prices, but in this case because of the planechase planes that came within then, the sets of the 2009 planechase planes and promos that together would often sell for $140+ just by themselves (Heck I sold a ton at that price about a year ago before I finally sold out of them). And that was just for the planes themselves and didn't even include the 2012 ones. The 2012 planechase box sets with decks and planes have been going for $200+ just buy themselves for a bit now, and while I suspect that's cooled thanks to the upcoming reprint, that still goes to show what people were willing to pay for these products. And once again, while there may have been lackluster demand for the planechase individual decks in general (thought night of the ninja and eventually chaos reigns certainly took off not long after release as far as demand due to the cards in the decks), the box sets themselves at the time were selling quite well, especially as we got closer to Christmas.
The point of all this is, while, sure, the vast majority of the magic playerbase may not care about planechase and may only be focusing on the regular cards in the decks that are being reprinted, inevitably there is a significant enough amount of demand out there for the planechase planes (I've also sold a ton of the 2012 planechase planes sets over the last few years, and they have always tended to sell quite well (usually ranging between $60-$90 per 40-card 2012 planar set depending upon how the market was at the time.) The thing is, as with other products before it, there is demand for it, and I can guarantee there will be plenty enough people nationwide (once again, see the broader market that is easier to see via online sales rather than the much smaller local market which may or may not have people interested in the format) to justify the product as made and priced who's main reason for being created was not the decks, but in fact the planechase planes themselves. (Though the reprinting of the planechase decks themselves certainly wont hurt, even though some of the main cards got reprinted in Eternal Masters and other sets anyway.)
People often tend to underestimate the broader market for many of these products and focus too much on just their local markets. If a shop can see that perhaps their local market may not be interested in the product then they certainly have the option of either not ordering it and focusing their spending on other products that will sell better in their area, buying the product and opening it to be sold as the decks and planechase planes and such separately, or as mentioned before, buying it, giving it a chance to sell to the local magic community and if they aren't able to, then put the decks up on ebay for example and sell it for msrp, or possibly even higher depending upon demand once they get to that point.
Take it from someone who sold a significant amount both online and at the local shop I was involved with for 6 years, products like these were gold, part of the reason for wizards producing products like this in limited print runs is due to knowing that while there was fairly limited demand for such products, inevitably there was enough demand out there to justify a limited print run, and at the same time make available more of those on the market for those interested in them.
I mean imagine those who were paying $200+ for just the planechase 2009/2012/promo planes sets of 86. Those in that demand pool willing to pay that much would likely be very happy right now at the prospect of not only getting all 86 planes in one package, but also, on top of that, getting the 2012 planechase regular decks as well. Once again, as with my other comments, I don't see $150 as being an unreasonable price for wizards to ask for a product like this. And I think when all is said and done, the product will sell just fine on a national level (yes local markets it may not, but that's why places like ebay exist in the first place, to give you access to those around the country who do want it and are willing to pay at or close to the msrp to get it).
It should be noted as well, that most of the instances that I hear of people playing with the planes are often kitchen table magic with friends rather than necessarily at shops, though I've certainly seen that happen a fair number of times over the years too. I've also been witness to and played commander/EDH games that included the planechase planes as well, and while those games could certainly take longer than normal, the added element of uncertainty could certainly make for some added fun for all involved. Planechase isn't for everyone, but for those whom it is for, its an enjoyable addition to their magic gaming experiences.
I'm torn - I have ~30 planes from the 3 Planechase decks I bought in the past (2009 Zombies, 2012 Ninjas/Cascade), but I really want the full set, as my EDH group plays Planechase regularly (and we love it) - we're currently using an app for the full Planar deck, but it's clunky and doesn't really allow some of them to be used (some make you draw X planes and walk to each one individually). We also haven't been able to try the Eternities Map variant, which is something we've been wanting to try.
I know $149 is an insane price, but it's a convenience thing for me - getting them all in one neat package. Tracking down the other ~50 single planes I need at $2-3 each (average TCG price), plus the promos (one of which goes for $20+) and shipping would easily be $100-150+ alone, so buying the Anthology and trading away the reprints that I'm not using only puts me ahead of where I'd be otherwise.
People trying to justify the MSRP is reminiscent of the same people justifying MM2's MSRP back then.
It happens every time there's a discussion about prices. There are some people so committed to the ideology of free-market supremacy, they're willing to sacrifice their own best interests for the sake of a multi-billion dollar company's profits.

A couple weeks after this announcement, I tried to buy a full set of 86 planes on eBay, hoping that the reprint announcement would have lowered the price. It went for over $200, and that's after this product was general knowledge. If you want to get the full set of planes, this seems like a great way to do it. Or, maybe wait until it comes out and then buy individual planes after SCG cracks a ton of these for the singles.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised at all if we were to see these products getting opened and having the planes and decks/deck singles sold separately and priced accordingly to help them sell better. So, perhaps something like seeing the planechase plane sets of 86 going for $100 (maybe $120 on the higher end depending upon what people are willing to pay). and then selling the singles separately for those that only want the planes or those that may only want the singles from the decks, etc. Honestly on the overall I would say that $100 would be a fair price and should sell quite well for those interested in just the 86 planes/phenomenon from the box set, and as mentioned, that would be basically 50% off of the current asking/selling/sold prices for the complete set of 86 that they can be gotten for right now. Guess we will just have to wait and see though. And heck for the people who want the decks, but not the planes, or the people who want the planes and not the decks, there is of course the potential option to buy the box set, and then sell the planes sets, or sell the 4 decks to end up with that amount of money back, and still getting what they particularly wanted from the product in the first place. Otherwise just keep an eye out for the items being sold separately and is available at a decent price for the parts you want, then go for it :).
i can't find people interested in playing planechase.
support has been nonexistent since planechase 2.
how about instead of this ***** pile of a product you rethink your support for this product? maybe instead of a half assed released whenever you feel like it do something like a precon at the end of each block. include 8 planes that feature locations from that block, 1 old location, and 1 preview of the next block. then make two precons featuring themes from that block set to showcase how awesome it was. eliminate duel decks in favor of this. kill all the birds, with one stone.
or maybe i'm just drunk and crazy. lets go with that.
yeah, drunk with logic...
I certainly wouldn't mind a planar pack of the current plane, old plane, and upcoming plane.

I still see a copy or 2 of Commander's Arsenal here and there. I believe my LGS sold out of it quickly but I'm pretty sure the only way they move FTV Annihilation is by giving it away as door prizes at tournaments
There's a fair bit of casuals around here so I can see Planechase Anthology moving to the casuals who have money to spend. That might also explain CA around here

Actually yeah, I want to pick up the themed decks for casual play if I can get them cheapish. Somebody in my playgroup already has 90-95% of the planes. I like the mechanics Devour and Totem Armor, and I haven't played with Cascade or Ninjutsu but I'm interested in familiarizing myself with them.
I fortunately own a set of both Planechase sets and all the planes and the have missed an opportunity to put everything together in one nice set. I hope they have the promo cards mounted in a similar to the SDCC stuff. I missed the boat in pre ordering for £100 so here's hoping I can find somewhere cheaper than £179.
That's way too expensive. No product should cost more than a $90 booster box. Anyone would be crazy to buy this product. You be better off printing the planechase cards from your printer and gluing them onto pieces of cardboard pizza box. then you could call it pizza chase. At least then you get something out of the money you spend on the card board.
ฺBooster Box MSRP is actually $144. For Modern and Eternal Master it's a lot higher. $90 is the discounted store price.
If people dislike the price, the store can lower the price like they did with the booster box.
I just wish there was a way to buy the planes without the decks themselves :/
I'd like to introduce you to something that I (and many others) call "The Secondary Market". Made up of stores like SCG, T&T, CFB, as well as tons of smaller sellers in venues like eBay, TCGPlayer, and MagicKardMarket, you can pick and choose what cards you want to buy. Buy just the planes, if you want!

No I get that, getting the 2012 is no issue and for a great price as well. Getting the 2009... From when I checked... Is far less easy, at least for a decent price. Hopefully when planechase comes out it'll be lower and more available
I've played mtg on and off since beta.
Unfortunately plane chase came out when I was busy being a single dad with restricted resources. I have played it and it's just plain fun. Most of the people I know round here that have been searching for the decks have been pay $50+ each. So all 4 for $150? I'm not complaining. Most of the stores around here will only be getting 2 copies and prolly selling it for about $250. It might not be for everyone but if you like the format the price is fair to get it all at once.
Really looking forward to this release, but I wonder if WotC considered reprinting the planes by themselves as booster packs?
A booster pack with random Planechase planes and Archenemy schemes could draw from the current pool of 136 oversized cards and would have given them a reason to design a handful of new ones to include in the set. And of course, insert random foil versions because why not.
I suppose the biggest issue with a concept like this is the fact that nobody really needs duplicates of plane cards. They would probably have to insert something else in each pack to chase, like oversized commanders or something.
Probably a bad idea, but it would be an interesting product.
Outside of the whole pricing discussion, doesn't anybody else wish they would have at least included a couple of new planes? With this thing out now (and presumably not doing terribly well) it's going to be years till they make some new planes. Too bad.
Why would you want these to be bought by anyone who already has the originals such as myself? Sure I never got the FNM ones, which mind you I wouldn't mind getting, but the original 80 are hella fun so an extra six aren't needed. Adding new planes in this would draw me into getting this, thus lessening the chance of another player who wasn't playing/couldn't get them at the time from getting one.
And why the hell are people complaining about the original planechase deck not being reprinted in this? Are you dumb? The original decks are only reprints and no big money cards. You can build those decks cheaply on your own with little to no trouble. The 2012 planechase deck however had new cards that have yet to be reprinted elsewhere besides Baleful Strix & Maelstrom Wanderer. So the 2012 deck reprints help get more out in circulation.

Because we got 8 decks with Duel Deck Anthologies for $100. We are getting the 4 2012 decks, which were $100 altogether when they were released, and then the 2009 and promo planes which somehow add another $50 to the whole thing. See the issue here? Getting less for more, which has been a theme over the recent years. For what we are getting it should easily have been $100, but for $150 all 8 decks and all planes isn't asking the world.
And getting more reprints of the cards in 2009 would be a great thing. With how poor WoTC is in the reprint department the more reprints the better. Not to mention putting the 2009 decks in here would actually make the Anthologies part on the box correct, per the definition. Right now only about an 1/8 of the product is only making it sound like an Anthology. Seriously, they messed up the definition for "anthology".
Also, Shardless Agent was also in EMA, not to mention Conspiracy 2 doing something as well, making this product worse long before it ever saw the light of day, bringing down what value there was to have from the actual decks.
In the end I'll only be getting the dice, since I collect them, and the planes I didn't have from 2009. This is whole product is overpriced and just not worth it.
Yeah, this is super confusing. This "anthologies" set just looks like bad idea no matter how I look at it.

ฺBooster Box MSRP is actually $144. For Modern and Eternal Master it's a lot higher. $90 is the discounted store price.
If people dislike the price, the store can lower the price like they did with the booster box.
