The answer to all of these questions and inconsistencies is "bad writing". Seriously, the old trope of the misunderstanding that could easily be explained away in 10 seconds except both parties are too stubborn to talk? That's romantic comedy level writing. Retconning Avacyn and the Helvault to be created in response to the Eldrazi, because of course everything now has to relate to the gosh darn Eldrazi? Stupid. Are we supposed to believe that Sorin honestly thought for one second that Avacyn would be more than a light snack to the Eldrazi? It's complete nonsense.
At the very least, at least SOI isn't yet as all-out dumb as Oath of the Gatewatch. Turning the marquee planeswalkers in to the Justice League? Nauseating. Writing by committee. Writing for focus groups. If this is how an entire team handles creative they'd be better off going back to one person.
Non sense iS what you writed.
For Sorin ( in the past) The Eldrazi are trapped To Never leave again. He indeed created Avacyn And Helvault to protect THE plane Not only to protect the humans from the plane but also from people planeswalking to the plane, he was creating a protector to the plane againt planeswalkers. Not that original, its not the first time a planeswalker protect his/her home plane. Shandalar, Zendikar, Dominaria, Tarkir, etc had have a protector against planeswalkers in the Past whem planeswalkers like Ob Nixiles conquered various planes... Yes Avacyn was created to save Humans, yes the Helvault was a prison but This doesn't exclude them from being able to deal with interplanar tyrants
I don't think Lily is actually behind anything, and I think it's a red haring that Jace's mind is coming up with because he doesn't trust Lilliana. The Angels are leaving villages in ashes. Ashes equals no bodies. No bodies equals no zombies. What would Lilly gain from this? I by no means think Lily is a saint, but she doesn't seem like a conqueror type villain. She cares about power but it is more about personal power for her. The ability to stay young, the power to do what she wants without anyone getting in her way.
Not to mention that Lili is terrified of Sorin and with good reason. Why would she go about ruining what is basically her home now by getting angels to destroy everything? She's a human necromancer living on Innistrad, which is currently prime target for crazy angel vengeance.
It's bizarre how it escalated so quickly. Like, Sorin could have basically said he was in a lack-of-mana-coma from creating Avacyn and that's why he didn't show up. That could have been the end of their disagreement.
I don't think that she wanted to hear that he didn't fulfill his promise to protect her world (which he helped put in harm's way) because he was mana-napping from a long day of protecting his world.
It's still understandable. It's not like he pulled an Urza who straight out told Serra that he was "too tired" to fight the Phyrexians he brought to her Realm. Should Sorin have setup a Planeswalker answering machine for her call? Sure. But it's not like he flat-out ignored her.
I wouldn't be too happy about it. If he was setting up an extraplanar defense system, he should have done it on Zendikar first. It seems like Sorin's B side was showing. Bury the nuclear waste barrels in your backyard, while I build windmills in mine. Or something.
They had one and it didn't get to him because of the helvault/he was recovering from creating Avacyn. Did you guys forget that he latter tried to seal them again with Nissa and when that failed he went in search of Ugin to try and solve the problem. It's not like he doesn't care about the situation. The problem stems from the fact that Nahiri was demanding instead of asking and Sorin wasn't having it.
Regardless of what Sorin did or didn't do, Nahiri in the present is doing despicable things. She has manipulated the leylines causing the Angels to go mad. She is summoning something to the plane (most likely Emmy) which has caused much of the residents to go insane. She is potentially leading mad murderous cultists. If it is Emmy she is potentially going to commit genocide in the name of revenge. I don't see how the murder of a whole plane can be justified with 'Innistrad deserves it cuz Sorin is a jerk'.
It didn't seem like she cared what the excuse was. Obviously Sorin cares, but he didn't care enough to offer up Innistrad as the trapping grounds, did he? No, he assured Nahiri that Zendikar would be safe, which it wasn't. That isn't the issue. Nahiri is just pissed.
At this point, the full reasoning of Nahiri's plot has yet to be revealed. I don't get why people are so quick to yell out "Bad writing." Fight Club was a *****ty movie if you only saw half of it.

Old Olivia could dominate Emrakul for the low low price of only 7 manas. Obviously she's weaker now, since she's not going to be able to simply turn the eldritch horror hiding behind the moon into her personal hentai slave by dancing across a few acres.

Regardless of what her "plan" is, everything up to this point is stupid. Retconning things so that everything revolves around the Eldrazi when there was a fine story explanation before is stupid. It's like bad comic book writing, when you have a perfectly good story that made sense and then a new writer comes in and says "oh what if this thing that happened before actually happened this way because of that?!" to shoehorn it in to their new pet story even though it doesn't entirely fit. It's lazy. And regardless of what these characters' motivations are, I can't imagine a single satisfying explanation for why Nahiri is bent on destroying Innistrad. Either she's craaaaaaaaazy, which is always a terrible lazy plot point, or she's a massive jerk lashing out disproportionately at innocents. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
And considering the fact that OGW features some of the worst plot-by-committee writing in Magic history, it's not like there isn't a precedent for bad writing with this new team.

One of the things I've noticed is that Planeswalkers are very protective of their planes. Seemingly over protective. Possessive. But then again, if I took on the responsibility of guarding the Earth, I suppose I would be over protective as well. Lots of people are counting on me.
From Nahiri's perspective, she thinks she was beguiled into guiding plane-eating monsters to her world, gave up several milennia of her life to not planeswalk and babysit statues, and then left alone to resolve issues when the plan started failing. And she has no right to be bitter or upset? If I had a thousand years to sit around and wonder if anchoring myself to a single plane (when there are thousands available to travel to) was the smartest move, especially when I was just new to idea of this expansive traveling, and the anchor was a threat so vast it could destroy the Universe, and I felt like the Planeswalkers who roped me into accepting this ball and chain both pressured me into the decision and then abandoned me after the consequences were manifest...? Nahiri had 5,000 years to stew like this. And now she's been gone another 1,000, possibly stowed away in the Helvault (TBD) by Sorin, which would piss her off because a) she was imprisoned against her will and b) without her on Zendikar, should anything happen to release the Eldrazi, her plane would be exposed. This all sounds like a lot of justification for her to be upset. Are her actions the most righteous? Of course not. Does it make sense that a being as old as her would be so petulant? Probably not. But she's probably thought about this confrontation and was expecting Sorin to be more amicable, and his nonchalant attitude towards Zendikar stoked flames that may have been smoldering deep within.

For one thing, all of these new secrets and hidden motives retconned in to the histories of established characters is a cheap way to create a mystery narrative. It's looking like Sorin did trap her in the Helvault, but that's dumb as well. Why would he do that? One (or both) of these characters is acting wildly out of character according to what we have seen so far. This isn't compelling character development.
As for the other guy, your post is obnoxious and petulant. Responding point by point to make little snipes is extremely childish. The retcon I'm referring to is obviously Avacyn and the Helvault being created to combat interplanar threats (Eldrazi) rather than the original story of their creation to keep balance between the humans and monsters. Craaaaaaaazy villains are not a reflection of real world mental illness. It's insulting that you would suggest they are. Compelling villains have conflicting values and complex emotions. They aren't just comic book evil. If you don't know what's wrong with OGW I don't know what to say. It feels like someone in a board room said, "those comic book movies are popular now, make our characters like that" and so we got Magic's version of the Avengers except they already eliminated two thirds of their universe's biggest threat effortlessly through the Deus Ex Machina of Teamwork.
It makes sense that you read a lot of comic books if you like this stuff. Magic is written like a bad superhero comic lately. Oh, and not all comic writing is bad. Most superhero comic writing is bad, but not all.
Maybe not compelling, but it is quite common. I've read long novel series where in a new book of the series, the main character suddenly has a skill that they just happened to never mention in the first 6-7 books. Why? Because the skill was necessary to the plot development, and was not relevant to any previous plots and so was never mentioned and possibly never envisioned to that point. While retconning is not the best method, at least here it's not a stretch. Avacyn is meant to protect the plane, and the Eldrazi would be a threat to the plane, and Sorin was involved in trapping the Eldrazi. The big glaring hole, however, is the 5,000 year gap between Sorin trapping the Eldrazi and his creating Avacyn (did he durdle around for 5,000 years, wondering how he was going to protect Innistrad from the Eldrazi?).
The trouble with narratives is you can never tell the whole story. It's impossible to fully make a character known, just like it's impossible to fully know a person in real life. Were Sorin's motives 1,000 years ago devoid of addressing creatures with devoid? According to Wizards, no, they were not.
My biggest issue is, why was Nahiri not on Zendikar when the Eldrazi were rampaging? She would have been free of the Helvault (if indeed she had been trapped), and could have easily traveled back to Zendikar. Was she trying to solve Zendikar's problem by making Innistrad a more attractive treat, but only successfully lured away Emrakul (if Emmy is indeed the problem)?
The recent story didn't really say to fight the Eldrazi it said to protect from threats to the plane and that it's magic could've prevented the interplanar beacon. More of a general protection for the plane as a whole.
The original info says he tasked Avacyn with protecting the plane as well. Not just fight monsters. It also species protect from demons which are sorta interplanar and the Helvault being used to imprison them.
How is an angel who could barely even protect the plane from threats inside the plane (Griselbrand) supposed to protect the plane from external threats? The whole thing just doesn't make any sense.
One Pre-Mending Angel construct take on all the Eldrazi? No. One Pre-Mending Angel Construct that can inspire the world's people to battle and literally fuel itself through the "power of faith"? Sure.

Sorin made Avacyn with a purpose. It doesn't means she was sufficient to that purpose, regardless of his expressed intent. It doesn't make as much sense looking back now because we understand she wasn't fully up to the task, but that doesn't mean it wasn't Sorin's intent.
And remember she was only half of the plan. The helvault showed itself at least resistant to Nahiri's powers which is kind of saying something for a pre mending walker specializing in stonework. And if he did manage to seal Nahiri that definitely bespeaks of it's capabilities.
And the way Sorin talks/recalls makes it definitely seem like the point was to have something to help him protect particularly when he was off gallivanting the planes. Not necessarily having a series of protections that will singlehandedly keep the plane safe. I think he fully expected to have to return for larger threats like how he personally cut his convalescence to confront an intruding planeswalker

Seems more of expanding than retconning
If she was to protect the plane itself, then why would her power get stronger based on how desperate the humans are, and get weaker when they were doing well? Wouldn't she be made to always be super strong at all times to protect from anything that might come along?
I think the hellvault was originally to catch demons because on this plane they always reformed into new ones when destroyed. So it was there to catch and hold them so that progress could be made.

I believe Avacyn, to some degree, is empowered by faith. If so, that would explain why she is more powerful as humans get desperate. People pray during desperate times.

Balance. She was meant to protect the plane as a whole not an individual species. Also Sorin might not have been able to have made a system/protecter that was always unbeatable. I'd imagine that was at least part of the reason he made the whole system of faith based wards and protections and such (that and it kept the livestock in pens)
It's certainly possible for Avacyn to protect the plane from extraplanar forces, such as other Planeswalkers. Nahiri was a competent fighter so she wasn't overwhelmed by Avacyn, but a less experienced Planeswalker would have been killed. She could have also eventually led hosts of angels in an attack, this was probably before all the angel hosts aligned themselves with Avacyn. Radiant, who was created by Serra, was able to hold her own against Urza.
I doubt she was created to fight Eldrazi. You also had Phyrexian sleeper agents popping up on Planes. Maybe Avacyn was anti-Phyrexian.

Thing is.. is she really crazy? The Eldrazi are loose. The containment failed twice. If she found some means of trapping a really horrible elder thing on a plane of bloodthirsty monsters that just happens to be the home of a planeswalker that ditched his responsibility to contain the thing in the first place because he cared more about his own plane.. is that really worse than leaving it loose on Zendikar which is now too destroyed to contain it?
I still think that if she found a way to contain the thing on Sorin's plane, making it Sorin's problem, it's poetic justice. The thing is going to corrupt whatever plane it's dumped on, like toxic waste, so why not put it into an existing toxic dump like Innistrad? There's still distinct possibility that Liliana is actually behind the angels and the corruption. If you remove those two things, what has she actually done? Inspired a cult to help draw the beast to Innistrad.. And that's it. Not a minor thing, I know, but she may not be responsible for the rest of the evil (besides killing a house of bloodthirsty vampires I suppose..)
The story out today should (probably) dispel notions that Liliana and the chain veil are causing Innistrad's major problems. However, she is up to something involving the chain veil and a storm (probably using the lightning). Maybe she and a stitcher are making a monster.
Also interesting that she's hearing the raven man.

The original info says he tasked Avacyn with protecting the plane as well. Not just fight monsters. It also species protect from demons which are sorta interplanar and the Helvault being used to imprison them.
Seems more of expanding than retconning
As far as recons go, this is very mild.
Sorin made Avacyn with a purpose. It doesn't means she was sufficient to that purpose, regardless of his expressed intent. It doesn't make as much sense looking back now because we understand she wasn't fully up to the task, but that doesn't mean it wasn't Sorin's intent.

Also interesting that she's hearing the raven man.
I made a cube. It's called 'babe cube' because all the cards have babes on them. http://www.cubetutor.com/draft/58369
And the raven man looks a LOOOOOOOT like Mishra...
