My local store got the new sample deck rares for 2016, and I did not see anything posted yet. Was wondering how the legality will be working as well, because we will no longer have cores sets? What will it be linked to? I was not able to open the sealed packs to see the commons and uncommons, but assuming there are cards that are not currently in standard will they be legal?
UPDATE: ADDED IMAGES. STILL WAS NOT ABLE TO OPEN ANY OF THE PACKS DUE TO LIMITED AMOUNT IN THE STORE. HOPEFULLY AN ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE CONTENTS AND LEGALITY WILL BE DONE SOON.
The cards have a number out of 16 at the bottom of them.
So they're continuing the Sample Decks? Are they actually called "M16/Magic 2016" or something else? Presumably, that is where the confusion is coming from.
I doubt it matters if they're legal. The sample deck cards pretty much never see any real play, anyway. Of course, I really enjoyed seeing Terra Stomper back for a couple years without its ruinous effect on limited. It's a pet card of mine.
Updated with pictures. The cards have a number out of 16, so there are 16 cards which form this stand alone release. That I assume will still be legal once Magic Origins rotates.
They have the set code "W16", so I'm not sure if they're going to be legal here. It would make sense if they were, to continue the trend, but I feel that they could have just had the SOI set symbol to reduce confusion.

I'm not sure if these are spoiled cards or fakes for core set 2016 but looks nifty
Sigh I didn't think it was important to take pictures of the boxes. Each had a planeswalker (Gideon, Chandra, Jace, Nissa, Lilliana) on the cover. Each contained one pack that matched the planeswalker's colour and the other pack was a random colour. I will take some pictures of the boxes on Monday again.
I don't think these are the battle packs, because they had no boosters with them. They seem more like the next generation of sample decks. I wish they made an announcement already, unless it will co-inside with the ban list announcement.

One time at an FNM someone randomly casted a Mahamoti Djinn against me.
FinalLogic already linked to an article, which linked to the official explanation, but here it is again for those who didn't click or read it:
Announcing New Booster Battle Packs
2. Now, with Shadows over Innistrad...
Coming with the Shadows over Innistrad release is another way to experience Magic—Booster Battle Packs.
Available in North American mass market stores, Booster Battle Packs contain a random pairing of two 30-card decks ready to battle against each other, as well as two Shadows over Innistrad booster packs to spice things up. These ready-to-play decks are flavored to feel like playing Sealed, with just a dash of the excitement that comes from opening up a booster pack or two.
Grab a Battle Pack, grab a friend, and you've got everything you need. We're offering these in mass market stores as a way to help out players who don't have access to one of our awesome hobby retailers. The decks are the same five monocolored decks available for free at Wizards Play Network locations around the world, and they offer a quick and easy way to learn and improve your Magic game—all while battling your friends.
...
Look for Booster Battle Packs in mass market stores starting May 13 with an MSRP of $9.99.
Before we go, some people have already noticed that there are cards in these decks that have a unique expansion symbol. Just so we're all aware, these cards are Standard-legal for as long as Shadows over Innistrad cards are Standard-legal.

So this is called "welcome deck 2016".
I doubt these will be standard legal and even if they were, apart from disperse, none of the cards are worth it.
They've already said that they're standard legal for as long as SoI cards are standard legal. See the last sentence of necrogenesis' quote above, which is a quote from a mothership article.
I hate wizards botched marketing system. Tell us every new product you'll be releasing. Then tell us whats in it. Then tell us how much, and where we can get it.
As a collector I am getting frustrated with the lack of information for these kinds of things.

Me neither, I have asked, countless times of my local stores to let me get one of those sample decks. But they claim that as an established player, I am not worthy of a freely given promotional demo deck. ....

As a precon collector, this really hurts me, and the fact that my LGS jacks up the Commander precon prices to $50. The lowest I could get it at is $40.

Probably because stores get a limited number of them and they are designed for getting new players into the game.

Rares as follows:
Sphinx of Magosi
Soul of the Harvest
Aegis Angel
Shivan Dragon
Nightmare
Sphinx of Magosi and Soul of the Harvest are new additions to standard, and could be useful.
Smaller scale things 100% were designed after.
