I don't think casual players like this big of a downside so i have no idea why this angel exists at mythic rarity and for whom it was made
That I can tell you: Me
Just keep on hating on this card, all of you. The less I have to pay for my playset, the better
Well, from the way people have been talking about it, it sounds more like the card where you can collect them in binder-full quantities just because (I've seen this done before with cards like Vizzerdrix and Obstinate Familiars). That said, I might do the same if the art looked a little cooler. It'd also be hilarious if the card somehow does see competitive play after having pages of them in your binder. Until then, I'd still use them for my "today, on Jackass" decks.
If you look only at the downside of Goldnight Castigator, then you'll be extremely upset with it. All you'll see is the double damage to you and double damage to it. That's how I originally looked at it, deducing that it was a bad card.
If you look at its upsides, then it's a hell of a magic card. It's a 4CMC, 4-power, 9-toughness, hasty, flying beatstick in red. I would happily play that in an aggressive shell. Sure the drawback is real, but you're also forcing the opponent to make some tough choices. If they leave it on the field, then they get to use its downside against you. But if they leave it on the field, they're also potentially dying to it. Imagine curving Olivia, Mobilized for War into this thing. Or this followed by Reality Smasher.
In Modern, it does not die to Dismember, and that's huge.
This card, at 4CMC, would have been unthinkable a few years ago. My gods, red now has a 2-power, 1 drop with no downsides.
If you don't like the angel, fine, but please stop complaining about it so much.

and you are here to stay and burn with me.
Also look at all the Sorcery-speed removal in the upcoming Standard. Ultimate Price is about the only maindeckable card that kills this before it swings in.
Thunderbreak Regent is still a solid dude, but I can imagine this guy finding a home in another 6 months.
I feel like to the slaughter will see maindeck, especially if we start seeing some heavy PW decks like some are predicting. I like the angel, not sure what to make of it though.

Oh no! It was unplayably bad in all eternal formats! The horror!
