I don't get the cultivator complaining. They have already decided mana dorks would be 2 mana going forward for standard, so check. He has 2 power, so failing anything else can start beating in. This rarely matters, but sometimes it does, so that's on par too. Deathtouch lets him scale in utility late game - drawing a mana dork turn 6 or 7 is terrible. At least he can trade with a creature. Besides Delirium is really a later game keyword for Standard. Seems just fine replacement for the soon to be rotating Rattleclaw Mystic, which was also rare, and I don't think anyone lost their mind then.
So it seems things have developed to the point where there is a good chance that Nahiri, Sorin or both might not live through the events in Eldrich Moon.
Looking forward to Leaf Gilder and Elvish Mystic at rare on the next reprint...or more likely, to drive sales, "Leaf Tender" which is a functional reprint of Leaf Gilder but at rare. Sigh. Card is fine but it's going to take a long time before rare two-CMC mana dorks don't taste like ash and sorrow in my mouth.
Sorin is sweet. Reverse-confidanting the table is savage in EDH and possibly deadly even in 1-on-1, and his other abilities are also quite solid. Esper Control has four different walkers that +1 to basically draw a card now (although one is a bit inconsistent)...time to get hyped about Esper Superfriends Control as a real, and real scary, contender?

I wouldn't put the following card at rare either, but I'd be more excited by a mana dork like:
Mad Pilgrim G
Human Monk
T, Discard a card: Add R to your mana pool.
1/1
Simple, flavorful as a callback to Avacyn's Pilgrim, and narrow enough to not be a general Elvish Mystic for every Standard deck because the cost is too high unless you're playing Madness cards or other shenanigans.
I hadn't really thought about it, but now it kind of bugs me that this Sorin isn't monoblack again. I really think all of his abilities make sense in monoblack, granted his ultimate is a stretch there and WB is no surprise.
But more and more I see this card and think 'man, I wish you were monoblack, new sorin.'

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.

To me, the difference is that Rattleclaw Mystic's morph trigger that was an effective super-ritual made it "feel" rare although it would have been fine and appreciated at uncommon. Likewise, Sylvan Caryatid's high toughness, hexproof, and ability to make all five colors "felt" rare. But Beastcaller Savant and this guy just feel really bad, like WotC is seeing how bad they can make rare mana dorks before people quit playing them or buying them.

The abilities of sorin makes his Maa cost worth it. He gives card advantage and has the ability to kill planeswalkers. His ultimate gave me a giggle.
As for the mana dork, I guess he is rare cause of his delirium. He's alright.
Pretty sure that Cultivator is a rare because limited. Deathtouch is really strong in limited, so they usually put it in small, under-the-curve creatures that you may or may not include in your 40 depending how control-ish your deck is. Deathtouch in a card that you /always/ will pick and play if you are in the colour, such as a mana dork may be backbreaking if appearing with the frequency of an uncommon. I do agree it makes for an unimpressive rare. Whenever they make these limited-only rarity shifts, they should add a little bit more of pizzazz to the card. Vigilance would have been nice.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Sorin:
+ ability is not only CA but a potential wincon
- ability could be better but gets the job done, can one-shot a five toughness creature and gains life
- ultimate seems like a worse wincon than the plus but whatever
2cmc mana dork:
man this card sucks. rare? conditional deathtouch? please tell me about how this would have ruined limited at uncommon
sorin is done screwing around making tokens all the time, I like it. I am torn about what kind of standard deck to make going forward, I feel pulled in many directions at once.
mushroom maker is interesting, I feel like he will have deathtouch a decent amount of the time. I don't really care that much that he is rare, mana dorks have always annoyed me regardless of stats and rarity. fast mana is very good so if you want to cry about this being rare just play leaf gilder and pipe down.

At least his delirium ability makes him useful late game to block and kill something, or continue getting 2 damage through unblocked. I think hes very slightly better than people think, although not sure if playable lol
Sorin flipping over back to back eldrazi titans FTW. Clearly they wanted erratic explosion on a more playable magic card. Ultimate is the worst ability is what makes me laugh but I'm content with flipping crap over and killing them with CMC.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
How can anyone look at Sorin and not connect that he's going to be in the same standard format as the Ulamog and the rest of the Eldrazi titans/enablers? I mean, what's better than casting Ulamog for 10? Letting Sorin Ula-mug opponents for 10 several turns earlier!
I doubt he'll be modern playable, but there's a really good chance he'll be a house in Standard.
New Sorin really makes me want to play Esper Control after rotation. +1 is overpowered, -X is very solid, only the ultimate leaves something to be desired (not hard to see many situations where you would -9 to make tokens, and then on your opponents next turn he plays Kozilek's Return).

Reanimate sucks cause it needs cards like Entomb to work.
My competitive legacy deck has about 10 non-land rares and one mythic. It sure makes you think...

I will probably suck it up and buy what I need except there is one card I refuse to buy and I think we all know what that is.
