But these are 58 cards that where Standard/Modern plyable.
Not only where there so many, but a lot of them where just fun. Mikaous, Olivia, Heartless summoning, Champion of the Parish(I loved that card). Fun is a hard thing to quantify, but I think a lot of you would understand when you look at this set and then look at the last 3 Blocks(And the spoilers this far, and we all know they spoil the good stuff 1st, and so far, the good stuff is a far cry from good)
The Innistrad set was the most successful set MTG has ever had at the time, and was blast to play in. This is why.
People like fun interactive cards that do many things well, people like to have a lot of options to brew fun and competitive decks. Innistrad did it all, and this is why I am pissed about MTG's current direction. It's just not *nearly* as fun as it used to be, and to me, it crosses the line of me not bothering to play standard, which I hate.
My point still stands, though. "Bad" cards are necessary for Magic's survival. The number you gave is still less than 25% of the set. You still can't argue that the ENTIRE SET can be playable and still have a balanced game. We're talking about roughly SEVEN HUNDRED BRAND NEW CARDS every year. You can't argue that ALL of those cards should be constructed viable, because that's pure and utter madness (pun fully intended).
Overall, we're not even close to done with spoiler season, so don't go on condemning this set.

That seems like a pretty comprehensive patent. I wonder if Nintendo and Konami get around it somehow, or if they just have to pay royalties to Hasbro. Also, it amuses me that the patent includes the rules definition for Banding.
Not to mention that if, as he says, Wizards owns the rights to all TCGs in america, Universal Fighting System would not still exist and be releasing sets. Unless, of course, that one letter (C instead of T) makes all the difference in the world, in which case the patent means squat.
Dude just wants to assert superiority and doesn't understand what he's talking about.
While we're talking about terrible design though, Startled Awake is both in direct contradiction of existing spell grammar (should be either "Startled Awakening" or at least "Startle Awake") and atrocious mechanical flavour. I mean, double-siding a card and mandating sleeve use is bad enough but releasing a "Transform" card that can never actually perform the namesake action (or worse, will break the game if it does) is just obnoxious. Then add to that how clunky the actual workings of the card feel and everything else about it.
You'd be better off with Flashback or a Kicker that spawns a token or even an interaction with another creature. This just feels like Wizards wanted to make a spell/creature hybrid for no reason and couldn't really pull it off.
They're even giving people a way to put a sorcery on the battlefield god damn it.

It's a nutty patent that shouldn't exist IMO. Nintendo and Konami get around it because Japan has a different patient system, and under trade rules, can still trade those good with the United States.
@Others: To the People thinking I keep on talking about this set being bad, I am also talking about the last 3 Blocks as well... Please dont cherry pick so hard.
I think a game with mostly playable cards is possible ofc, but as I said, more is better, and with so few Wizards has crossed a line for me. I didnt say Wizards needs to make 100% playable sets, please try to read what I said better.

Oh wow, I just realized that Angel of Deliverance doesn't say "Deals damage to a player" just "Deals Damage."
Oof. That could be a beating. No wonder it costs 8.

Good catch...ooh, now I want to make her get into some "Fights"! Fight that little utility creature, exile that bruiser waiting in the wings!
...especially one that already has evasion and can pick up a Sword of Fire and Ice or Body and Mind or such and get some extra work done if need be.
Careful throwing the word 'evasion' on to this thing. If you're playing EDH (and it kinda sounds like you are), firstly, this thing gets exiled the second it hits the board. If it doesn't, sure it'll evade all the 2/2s and higher on the board. But you toss a Sword on one of these, and I guarantee it no longer has 'evasion'. He's not doing as much 'work' for you as you think.
You mean the swords that give evasion by making it so the guy I opt to swing at isn't able to block him because of protection?
Startled Awake is a horrible card. In terms of burn... 1 damage is 3 cards, so this card for 4 mana is dealing 4.1 damage.... then for another 5 mana you get to chance to maybe do it again.... when you pay another 4 mana?
So for 13 mana you get to deal in essence 8.2 damage? Which most likely will take 3+ turns to do...
Welcome to mediocrity.
Except you are realistically starting at 53 cards in deck per game. Not 60. And that counter is always diminishing. Not to mention this turns into a blocker/hard to block creature for a decent cost. So 53-5 (because you cast it on turn 5) = 48 (49 on the draw). 48/13 = 3.76 (or 3.69 at 49 cards.) If you wanted to equate it to damage. 13 cards milled is a hefty amount. A non-negligible amount. 4 of these and 4 Talent of the Telepath would be great friends if you could gum up the board.
Has mill ever been a relevant strategy? If all you're concerned about is playing with your friends then there's far better mill strategies then this.

In Lorwyn Standard, it was viable due to Sanity Grinding. It was viable in original Zendikar with Archive Trap. It was viable in the original Innistrad standard due to Nephalia Drownyard. There were some Blue-Red Sphinx's Tutelage decks running around a few months ago at non-FNM tournaments. Mill needs incredibly strong cards to be viable in standard. So yeah, mill has been viable in standard based formats for a little while.

Don't click this. I mean it. No, seriously. I said not to click it. The world might blow up. Even if you just think about it. BOOM. See? The whole world could've just blown up and it would've been all your fault. Just don't click this.
