Would it have screwed up Limited or upset the balance of the game to make these scrylands instead? Maybe at Uncommon?
They're resetting the land power level, it's something they feel they have to do. Plus, for this cycle it was a long time coming. It was necessary like 15 years ago.
Resetting isn't right. It's fluctuating. Power level is an important way, according to themselves, development creates different standard environments. Removal, mana splashing, burn, etc. are adjusted in what they do. There's no need for a flat power level.
They're perfectly fine. Limited needs fixing but one life isn't usually going to amount to much. In all my years, I can count on my fingers, the number decided on the number. It really isn't worth adding 9,000 abilities to every card in limited where new players to the format are already slowing everything down having to read everything to begin with. Etbt lands are also sometimes featured in top their decks. They're fine with no silly frills.
I find it odd that they would put these plain etbt lands in duels because duels already has guildgates, checklands (all 10), tango lands and enemy manlands (cycle not yet complete, im guessing the rest come with oath). By default everybody atleast has checklands and guildgates (which can be fetched via gatecreeper vine).
I totally want battle lands. They're actually better in my particular commander meta than shocks. I actually play plenty of basics for ramping and stuff so they have zero drawback by the time the game heats up.
There's a few reasons for the Scoured Barrens cycle at common in Khans block.
-We're playing in a multicolor block.
-R&D is promoting a midrange to lategame strategy, hence the strictly better "gain 1 life" effect. Aggro isn't as supported.
-Morph.
It's natural that non-multicolor blocks like BfZ and SoI have strictly worse lands, and at uncommon. The promotion is towards 2-color decks.
Ugh. Why did they have to make that cycle anyway? Why not just reprint the strictly superior life lands from Khans? I really don't get it.
For one thing, because "Scoured Barrens" doesn't mesh with the established geography of Innistrad.
I think with Nahiri messing up the endemic landscape of Innistrad with her cryptoliths, practically any type of terrain would fit into the established geography of Sorin's home plane (at least for now) .
Why not print "~ comes into play tapped. You may discard a non-land card from your hand and have ~ enter the battlefield untapped. T:add whatever"
A recent Sam Stoddard article talked about how they wanted to create a cycle that was simple, plane-agnostic, and reprintable anywhere they wanted some basic fixing.
So they made them nerfed Guildgates?
Is this our punishment from WotC for reading spoiler threads?
I just hope we get an end to the unfinished enemy land cycles, like Tangolands and Fastlands.
Actually, if they do make a new cycle this block they could be the "Shadow Lands" (riffing off Battle Lands from BFZ) which sounds like a pretty cool name imo.

Guildgates were basically the same except for a couple cards with only Gatecreeper and Maze's End being interesting outside of limited. Like I said earlier, the one life isn't a big deal and was actually a drawback in Zendikar sometimes with Needlebite Trap. Something like gate is ok once in a while if you want to make dual lands into a block mechanic, but that's not something you'd want to do constantly.
I don't want battle lands for standard. I want battle lands for casual. They're also not unusable like the kamigawa/tempest/ice age craplands. ETBT isn't ideal, but it's workable, especially when that's every dual in standard besides enemy pains.
Yay, more recycle bin material. They really should come up with another little gimmick like the 1 life to put on these. Would this be too good?

It's true, but it would give you a reason to run the damn thing in EDH, at least. Modern and Legacy would never touch a CIPT dual with a 3m pole.

Yeah; I do understand the reasoning behind it but easily-available fixing in duels certainly take a hit with the loss of Gatecreeper Vine & company.
I like these lands though, there's some reasonably nice art and there's definitely value to having a cycle that can be reprinted anywhere, without the constraints that an additional ability rider would impose.
