Sorin should be mono-black. He is pragmatic, selfish, hedonistic, and has no qualms about killing to meet an objective, or just casually. He is not a noble protector either: his actions regarding Avacyn and Zendikar were motivated by self-preservation for his race and plane, respectively. He doesn't care about other planes or peoples, just threats to his own. Otherwise, why didn't hop back to Zendikar when Nahiri sent out the distress call?
I get that you can argue Wizards' decision to add white due to 'greater good' points, but let's be honest. Sorin is out for Sorin's interests, same as Liliana. True, he doesn't wantonly kill as much as her, but that's just self-control that he's learned over the millennia. He is not like Gideon because Sorin would not be willing to hop between two worlds solving problems like Gideon did with Ravnica and Zendikar. Heck, he has problems getting to one plane on time. If it's not Innistrad, then Sorin will let other things take priority.
I've resigned myself to yet another rendition of B/W Sorin, but will still pine for a well done mono B version.
Since Sorrin is going to kill/absorb Avacyn maybe he won't have his white this block, I mean he has to get pretty dark to kill his own creation right? Also since the whole vamps are all merged with stone pillars thing he may not make vampires either. I want to see a new cheaper mono black Sorrin that can do some life drain maybe destroy a creature or something new for black. Last ability could just be damnation as a way to allow us to have it in some way. He could cost 3BB and come into play with 5 loyalty with the final costing 5 loyalty so we could use him as a field clear or as a walker. But maybe the utility would be too good.
For all the coolness we like behind Sorin, we need to remember that he is not the good guy at all. He was initially a black walker, he is the second oldest walker who is known to be alive, and he is selfish and has a huge evil touch.
I hope they dont wash him to the white purifier.
While I would like another mono black Sorin to show up, it is important to the character's story that while he is selfish and cold in the way that only a person who has survived for millennia by feeding on the lifeforce of others can be, he also retains a guardian personality archetype. He was exercising this side of his personality when he went looking for Ugin, and Innistrad is the plane he has put under his protection so it brings the white out in him. If we didn't get a B/W Sorin here I would be shocked. I am however hoping that this version is not focused on tokens/creature buffing.
^ This. Sorin is a LOT like Gideon. In fact, I'd say the only distinct differences between the two are A. Sorin tends to be a loner instead of a commander. and B. He is willing to make sacrifices to keep people safe.(hence the B in his casting cost) He is very much a hero, and very much a good guy. In most ways more than anyone other than Elspeth and Gideon.
Yeah, he's not really much of a hero. He does things out of his own self-interest, even if they happen to occasionally be in the greater good. Ugin probably said it best:
"although he speaks of the greater good, he is a selfish creature. He fought the Eldrazi not out of compassion for Zendikar, but out of a very long-minded sense of self-preservation. If more urgent matters have consumed his attention, his priorities may not align with our own."
As quoted by the most selfish planeswalker besides Nicol Bolas. I don't trust Ugin's judgments of people, because he has Dr. Manhattan Syndrome. He's a complete and utter sociopath.
It's more likely to be Sorin, Jace and Arlin in shadows and Nahiri + Liliana in Moon. Tamiyo probably left the plane (I hope she did D:)
Well, based solely on art, Tamiyo will be around to witness Avacyn's End, so depending on whether that happens at end of SOI or Moon, I think that determines her presence in the block.
Similarly, Nahiri looks like she's largely done with the actual destruction she's caused the place (everything else on horror theories seem to be also already set in motion), she might either leave or stay on the plane (depending on reasons) because Sorin is around.
Jace was on Zendikar as part of the Oath, but he didn't have his own card.
Jace is a protagonist (clues, investigate) so he'll definitely have his own card.
Considering Tamiyo left her journal behind for Jace to investigate, I feel that Tamiyo will be represented on a couple of cards, but not an actual walker herself.
just for the sake of clarity, LSV doesn't say he'll be previewing Arlin. he just says the card will be previewed on the 15th. He only explicitly says he's previewing Sorin.
it doesn't matter much, but it's worth reading his statements properly.

Modern: G Tron, Vannifar, Jund, Druid/Vizier combo, Humans, Eldrazi Stompy (Serum Powder), Amulet, Grishoalbrand, Breach Titan, Turns, Eternal Command, As Foretold Living End, Elves, Cheerios, RUG Scapeshift
But it's true though: Sorin's motivations begin and end with him. Think about how he left Zendikar after Nissa destroyed the Keystone. A hero would have stayed, maybe even coming around and working with Nissa again to defeat the Eldrazi. Sorin's reaction best describes him: You made a mistake when I told you not to, and I'll leave you to your fate.

It's different with Jace. He was going to be the poster walker for the very next blog, getting a high-profile card to match. Tamiyo has been MIA for four years, and her fans have been screaming for another card. If she doesn't have a new card in Eldritch Moon, her fans will be out for blood.
Heck, she may even get an Oath card in the next set, too.

He left to find Ugin. He didn't leave because he was like "yo peace I'm out" he isn't an altruistic hero like Elspeth or Gideon. They are archetypal heroes, and one dimensional. Sorin falls in the "Anti-Hero" or "realistic hero" archetypes. He's flawed, but still a hero.
If it's Tamiyo and not Nahiri it means we don't really have an antagonist Planeswalker. Tarkir was a little weird because in someways Sarkhan was both protagonist and antagonist something sort of reflected in the fact he had two planeswalker cards.
With the trailer if I was to guess at the storyline for SOI it's that Jace and and Sorin arrive on innistrad and separately start looking for clues as to what's happening the set ends with the reveal of whatever it is they are calling whether it's emrakul or the sea god that's been mentioned.
Eldritch I guess is how they deal with this new threat so we get Nahiri showing what it is she wants and I'm guessing Jace bringing Liliana to help

I hope they dont wash him to the white purifier.
Sorin was 'washed white' since the last Innistrad, and given the card art of him dispatching Avacyn shows his left hand glowing white with black smoke all around it, I doubt they're backing down here of all places. Nor should they because Sorin as written is not a mono B character; he may be a Vampire, and he does kill everyone who gets in his way, but he violates both of the core tenets behind black color philosophy; personal ambition and self-centeredness.
Even the first time we saw Sorin (when he was a mono B card) why was he on Zendikar? To keep his end of a pact with two other planeswalkers to protect a plane he had no personal interest in and nothing to gain from. And despite the fact that neither of the other parties held up their end of the bargain (including the one with an actual connection to the place who is now throwing a huge violent fit because of his desertion) he stuck it out with an incorrigible upstart (Nissa- somebody who truly was whitewashed) who ended up sabotaging his efforts. Sure Eldrazi are a threat to everyone which means that Eldrazi are a threat to Sorin, but that's not the reason given why he's willing inconvenience himself. He does it because they're a threat to Innistrad.
So what does he have to gain there? He was born human, but every human hates him inherently because he's a Vampire. All the vampires hate him because he's a traitor who protects humans- while also protecting Vampires from themselves. He did it in part by creating a manifestation of white mana (Avacyn as intended). And now that she's malfunctioned so to speak, he doesn't leave the ingrates to their own devices, he takes responsibility to deal with her- despite the fact that feels nothing for these people and they have nothing he wants. After all, who knows what Sorin actually wants other than to protect Innistrad. Whatever it is, he spends little time pursuing it, despite all the liaisons he's made over the millenia, and his supposed hedonism we never see played out. He's just constantly dealing with other people's problems.
Magic may need a mono black planeswalker who isn't a complete monster, but Sorin isn't the man- at least not today. When they make a a storyline where Sorin is actually doing things for Sorin's own sake, perhaps then.
let's be real, even in its first appearence in Zendikar he was never completely a bad guy and adding W to his casting cost did not make him any more of a good guy in the story.
His action always have a partially dark motive, for example he did not create the angels to protect the humans on innistrad out of pity for them, he did it so the vampires would not give in to their hunger and counsume everything and end up destroying themselves. he did not help imprisoning the eldrazi to help some random world, he did it so they would not come to innistrad.
Wrong. He created Avacyn to protect humans AND vamps. Without her, the vamps would kill all humans, and then themselves. Without her, all the humans die. Without her, all the vamps die, without her, the plane dies. THAT'S why he made her. Because there NEEDED to be a balancing force on the plane. Sounds pretty B/W to me.
If you looked at the 2nd checklist card, Arlinn is the only multicolor rare/mythic DFC.
This assumes that she is, in fact, multicolor on the front. She may instead be like Garruk was.
Which would be a pretty good reason to obscure the 2nd checklist card, especially if they want to surprise the werewolf fans with a R/G legendary flip card while Arlin was a G walker front and r on back.
I am willing to bet we get no Nahiri in this block. Her role on Innistrad seems much more like a story device and the fact that the moon is a focal point in the block, I feel Tamiyo will have more of a role to play than Nahiri. Something tells me that Nairi is going to be the carrot at the end of the stick for this block.
I'm pretty confident you've got that backward. The story seems to revolve around the moon being all jacked up. The moon is a big rock. Nahiri has it in for Innistrad and her whole thing is manipulating rocks.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
So Arlinn is almost guaranteed to be RG, given the color distribution of the other two planeswalkers in the set:
Jace: U
Sorin: WB
leaving Arlinn Kord as: RG
That kind of color balance reminds me of the Theros planeswalkers, who were thebestsingle batch in a very, very long time (so hopefully these three will be on par).
You know, considering the perfect balance of colors for three planeswalkers as you mentioned here, it would be nice to have Tamiyo in place of Jace; Sure, he doesn't have a card in BfZ block, but that doesn't mean he must have one now. Plus, Tamiyo seems to be playing an important part in SOI, so she should make an appearance.
Having said this, I must admit I now begin to question WotC's wisdom in making Sorin, Solemn Visitor. Solem Sorin is the SECOND time he is in a card without contributing much to the plot, so given that Jace was missing from BfZ block despite his relatively noticeable role, it now looks like it would have been perfectly fine for Sorin to not have shown up as a card in Tarkir.
Also, I now worry this will be the THIRD time poor Sorin is going to be hyped up as an important character in a block, only to spend his time in the block story munching popcorns again...
It doesn't say anywhere that they are limited to 5 planeswalkers per block. Zendikar block, for instance, had 6 (Nissa, Sorin, Chandra, Jace, Gideon and Sarkhan).
My guess is that they will print a 6th walker if they consider it to be important enough for the story. So my guess is Sorin, Jace, Tamiyo, Liliana, Nahiri and the werewolf walker.

In my dream, the world had suffered a terrible disaster. A black haze shut out the sun, and the darkness was alive with the moans and screams of wounded people. Suddenly, a small light glowed. A candle flickered into life, symbol of hope for millions. A single tiny candle, shining in the ugly dark. I laughed and blew it out.
Many thanks to HotP Studios. Special thanks to DNC for this great sig.

But sarkhan did not get a card there, so if anything that would reinforce that notion that Tammy/Nahiri will not get a card.
Of course he did ^_^;, my bad disregard. I really hope we do get 6 PW's, but if i have to choose between tamiyo and Nahiri, i choose Nahiri for flavors sake and for having her finally outside of commander.
Jace (guaranteed in the set): We're going to get a Jace card, without a doubt. He's the poster child and will literally sell the set, because of how popular of a character he is. I'm hoping we see some divergence in his colours, like maybe a UB or a UR Jace would open up the character a bit and allow for some depth, which is something the goody two shoes doesn't seem to have. I swear his story is always the same. Theres a puzzle, I can't solve it, I solved it, rinse and repeat (just look at RTR block and BFZ block).
Sorin (guaranteed in the set): The last two iterations of Sorin have been fairly similar, and I doubt we'll get a mono black Sorin due to Liliana being the poster girl for Eldritch Moon. I don't want to see another WB Sorin, at least for a little while. Maybe something like a BR Sorin would be really cool! It will allow him to do differing abilities and it would make sense story wise. The vampires on Innistrad are predominantly BR, that plus the fact that Nahiri has come to his plane, destroyed Markov Manor and has killed the majority of his family (brood? swarm? I dunno what you call a collection of vampires) that plus what's happening with his plane would be more than enough to drive anyone mad. Also, he looks really angry in his booster pack art.
Arlinn (guaranteed in the set): A lot of people are assuming Arlinn Kord will be RG, based on the fact that she's a werewolf, both her backstory and the last Uncharted Realms doesn't support that claim. In my opinion she will more than likely be WG. Why? Because her story supports it, she saves two hunters from a demonic presence and warns them to leave, these hunters have killed other werewolves and if she was acting on instinct (like a red mage would) she would have killed them, but she shows to have some sense of control, something more aligned with white. Granted I may be wrong

Liliana (guaranteed in the set): We'll more than likely see a mono black Liliana, as to what significance she has story wise? I don't know. It feels odd that she's even here and has taken centre stage, as so far she has no impact on the story and I feel like she's pushing other planeswalkers from getting cards (i.e. Nahiri/Tamiyo/Tibalt) But, she's the poster girl so it's pretty much guaranteed.
Nahiri (possibly in the set): I think everyone is in agreement, that if we see Nahiri she'll more than likely be WR, story wise she's pissed off, and has even been featured on red spells. Though we may not see her at all, which confuses me as she would be the big bad of the set. Granted this is based on if Wizards are following their rule of 5 walkers per block, if we see 6 walkers I feel Nahiri is a serious contender.
Tamiyo (possibly in the set): The fangirl inside of me wants to see Tamiyo again, she's a big part of the story, considering her first appearance the last time we were in Innistrad was her investigating the moon, and now Jace is going around picking up her blue's clues. So it's likely that we'll see another copy of her, but if Jace is mono blue, and we do see a Tamiyo she'll be forced into a secondary colour. She will more than likely be WU, though I would really like to see her be UR, maybe her studying the moon has driven her insane? I don't know. I wouldn't be able to deal with a UR Tamiyo, my favourite planeswalker in my favourite colours? Yes please ;u; Just food for thought.
Tibalt (possibly in the set): I'll be honest with you, I don't think we'll see Tibalt this set, I mean he may have a pressence in the story, such as Ugin and Jace in BFZ block. But I don't think there is enough room for his card. It's a shame, I know, I was hoping Tibalt would go for a round 2 with Sorin, but alas design limitations and balancing ruins this dream :'(
I get that you can argue Wizards' decision to add white due to 'greater good' points, but let's be honest. Sorin is out for Sorin's interests, same as Liliana.
